ecisions, decisions. It doesnt take anything
particularly complex to halt me in my tracks -
the choice of what toppings to have on my pizza
is usually enough to have me humming and hawing and
scratching my head in bewilderment.
If only life were really that simple. As a country, we
faced a huge decision last month in the form of the
referendum, and I suspect that the choice we made
there will result in a whole load of other decisions
having to be made further down the line.
Rachel and Tim Eagle, one of our BMS mission partners, took the huge
decision to take their family to the other side of the world, and had the
courage one year later to realise that the plans they had made were going to
have to change. Theyve now left Mozambique, and you can read news from
them on page 22. Please keep them in your prayers.
How about the most important decision we can ever make? Choosing to
become a follower of Jesus Christ is totally life changing (or if it isnt, we
possibly havent understood the nature of the decision). On October 26th,
well be celebrating with at least one person who has made that decision for
themselves and is being baptised as a sign of it. If youre ready to (literally)
take the plunge too, please speak to me to find out more.
Lots of other people havent reached that stage, but they do have lots of
questions about who Jesus is, and what life is really all about. If thats you,
a great decision to make would be to come on the next Alpha course. Were
starting one at the end of October, and its an easy environment to explore
some of those questions more without any pressure.
What about those of us who already have a relationship with God - with so
much going on even just at PBC (as you can see from pages 5, 6 & 7) how
do we decide how to order our lives? Do we just decide for ourselves, or do
we pray and seek Gods plan for our lives and for the church? Sounds like a
cue to come to the church prayer meeting! We meet on the morning of the
second Saturday of each month - please make it a priority.
One more decision - do we decide to spend time putting others first? For a
number of years weve been taking part in Operation
Christmas Child, and you can read on pages 12 & 13 about
what a difference a small amount of time and money can
make.
Happy decision making!

From the Editor
We have enjoyed quite a glorious summer, both in terms of weather and
activities. The sun has shone on all (or most) of our work and play, and if
it hasnt been shining it has at least been dry, with just the few welcome
relief showers. This has meant that we have had great fun and success
with our Sunday barbeques, Friday gardening, KAOS beach trip and
Church picnic, as well as the Peebles Churches Together Big Sunday Fes-
tival. Some photos have been included in the centre pages of the maga-
zine that show off some of the fun we have had this summer. We will also
hopefully hear a bit of the feedback from the Big Sunday Festival organis-
ers and helpers meeting in the next magazine.
However, the weather eventually turned a bit cooler, and as it did the
leaves started to turn and the fields turned a lovely golden; harvest time
was upon us. We ended September giving thanks for the harvest and
hearing about living a life of gratitude. It is such an easy thing to think we
are doing in our everyday life, but I was definitely left at the end of the
sermon in the realisation of how far I have become removed from the way
of gratitude that we should strive towards. If you werent there (or have
maybe forgotten exactly what was said), you can find the sermon, and all
other sermons, on our church website, www.peeblesbaptistchurch.org.
Now we start the road towards Christmas, there are things to think about
like the shoeboxes. You will find plenty of information inside this issue on
pages 12 and 13 on how to pack a shoebox, what kinds of things to in-
clude, what happens to the boxes. . . Margaret Cowan is our contact in the
church for these, and the latest
date to get the boxes to her is
Sunday 2 November.
Till next time,
Morag

The following open letter was sent at the end of last month from
the Baptist Union of Scotland to Right Hon Douglas Alexander.

26th September, 2014

Dear Mr Alexander
Regarding Military Engagement in the Middle East
Today you will be asked in Parliament to support a motion drawing Great Britain back
into military engagement in the Middle East. I recognise that there will be great
pressure upon you and your fellow Members of Parliament as you debate this issue
and seek the wisest route forward in a complex situation. I therefore write primarily to
assure you of my prayers and the prayers of the Baptist Churches in Scotland on this
hugely significant day for our country and the Middle East.
Yesterday I met face to face with 8 Arab Christian Leaders from Palestine, Iraq, Syria,
Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan. Each one of these Christian leaders are involved in relief
work in their communities, with refugees and are offering support to the majority of
moderate Muslims in their countries. Each of them represents minority groupings in
their nation, who are under threat and yet they have not lost hope for future peace in
their lands.
Their united plea was that we should not repeat the mistakes of the past by
increasing militarisation in the region. In their informed local opinion, military action
leading to the deaths of a few extremists simply breeds more extremists. They argue
that military intervention in the region over many years has not brought peace and
that it is time for a new approach.
Their request of our Parliament, which I present to you, is for a paradigm shift in the
way western nations respond to conflict in the Middle East. They pray that we will
resist this call to military escalation in the region and that we will reassign military
budgets in the Middle East to budgets for education and community development.
They ask that we would seek to develop business relationships in the area and
publicly demonstrate in the world media our support for the moderate majority in the
region rather than focusing on the extremist.
Their heart, as yours, is for peace in the Middle East. May you consider their plea as
you listen to other opinions today.
Yours sincerely,

Alan Donaldson
General Director, Baptist Union of Scotland

Samaritans
Purse Shoebox
Appeal:
Operation
Christmas Child
Since 1990, more than 113 million boys and girls in over 130 countries
have experienced Gods love through the power of simple shoebox gifts
from Operation Christmas Child. Samaritans Purse works with local
churches and ministry partners to deliver the gifts and share the Good
News of Jesus Christ.
For details of how to fill a box, please see the instructions below. Please
note that this will be the last year in which we will require shoeboxes for
the elderly also.
SHOEBOX
Find an empty medium sized shoebox and wrap box and lid separately.
BOY OR GIRL?
Decide if your gift is for a Boy or a Girl and the age category: 2-4, 5-9 or
10-14. Download and print the appropriate boy/girl label. Mark the cor-
rect age category and stick the label to the top of your shoebox.
FILL WITH GIFTS
Fill your shoebox with a variety of new gifts that will bring delight to a
child. See gift suggestions below or have a go at making your own.
Remember to pray for the child who will receive your shoebox gift.

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat...
...but the goose called Hallmark is quite fat enough! Were going to be
doing something a bit different this year to send one
another greetings. Now that were growing as a church,
its becoming increasingly difficult to send Christmas
cards to everyone else in the church - it would cost a
fortune, uses up the Earths resources, and theres
always the danger of people being missed out.
So instead, were going to be having a Greetings Tree
on which you can hang your greetings to the rest of
the church. Wed like to encourage everyone to
use that, and contribute the money you would
have spent on Christmas cards to a central fund.
Well be publishing more details of how that will
work, and where the money will go to, in the
near future.
The Baptist Assembly in Scotland meets in Motherwell at the end of
October. In this important year for Scotland, Assembly will be considering
the place of our Baptist communities within our nation. What do we antici-
pate when we pray Your Kingdom come? What influence do we expect to
have in the shaping of the future of our nation? How can we influence the
health of Scotland for the better, encourage our communities to support
one another and engage with areas such as education and social justice
through the mission and ministry of the local church?
Although each church that is part of the Union sends official delegates,
the evening sessions and Saturday morning are free and open to all. Were
trying to arrange transport for anyone who would like to go up on Friday
night for a lively worship session, some great teaching, and to support Ian
as he is welcomed as a fully accredited pastor.

Kings Meadow Update
The main focus of the summer was building the shed, which is now in
place, although it could do with another coat of green paint before winter
sets in. The shed build was thanks to Bill, Rex his neighbour and Jason
from the houses next to the garden. If you have not seen the ordered
beauty of the interior, have a look at the photo collage earlier in the mag.
We have approached the Community Service team to ask for help with
the paths. The team leader has been out to see the garden, and has agreed
that his team can supply labour and machinery, including the whacker
plates. This is great news, as it will save us loads of money and will be
great to have a community team getting involved. Please pray that this
will go ahead, as communication has gone a bit quiet recently!
Another bit of good news is that Jason, who helped with the shed, asked
if he could borrow the lawnmower to cut his neighbours grass this is
wonderful, as we are literally seeing scripture coming to life (read
Mark 12:31 for a clue!)
The garden has given lots of pleasure over the summer, particularly for
the children, who have helped with many jobs, and have enjoyed picking
beans, peas , raspberries and strawberries to eat.
Jobs for early October:
Digging the beds, ready for the winter
Picking up stones, before the last mow
Painting the shed
More garden volunteers are URGENTLY needed. Please
pray about whether you could offer to help occasionally; it
would be a great encouragement. The main requirement
is that you enjoy the company of other people, and
would be willing to lend a hand with a range of jobs.
Tools, coffee and chat is always supplied, and this is
a great way of making new friends and links
with people in the area.

Been saved, being saved, will be saved
Salvation is a many-faceted, glorious reality which has time aspects attached
to it. Weve been saved so we sing songs like Happy day, oh, happy day,
when Jesus washed my sins away and My chains fell off, my heart was free.
I often recall that day when, as a teenager, I first heard that you could be
born again and was saved.
Then were being saved as a present day reality. Were continually being res-
cued from ourselves our foolishness, our bad reactions, our blind spots, the
world, the flesh and the devil. God keeps on saving us and giving us grace to
live to please him.
Ultimately, and in theological terms, salvation is a future occurrence, an es-
chatological event. Its being saved from banishment from the presence of
God in eternity. In reality, everything that happens to us is almost trivial
compared with salvation from hell, judgment and the wrath of God on that
final day. So in its fullest sense salvation is a future event for us all, a time
when well be saved into eternal delight and glory.
Here Paul exhorts us to put on the helmet of salvation. In Romans 13 he says,
Our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. Hes referring to
Gods cataclysmic judgment on the universe. Our salvation is getting closer
and closer.
Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word
of God. (Ephesians 6: 17)
Part 11:
The Helmet of Salvation

19
The hope salvation
I remember the first time I flew and saw the dawn beginning to break. The
sky was black and it was as though someone took a golden pen and drew a
line across it. This beautiful golden line opened up and gradually the colour
of the sky became deep blue. I was mesmerised by it, just watching the day
that was about to break.
Speaking of salvation Paul says, The night is far gone, day is at hand. Salva-
tion is on its way. This short night will soon be over. Glory will break out.
Paul urges us to put on the helmet of salvation. Elsewhere uses a different
phrase and relates it to the future, For a helmet take the hope of salvation (1
Thess. 5:8). We must put it on. In hope were saved.
In Romans 8 Paul questions, Who hopes for what he already has? This re-
minds me of Christmas. A few days before Christmas the children seen the
parcels under the tree and have great hopes. Theyre tempted to touch the
presents and long for different things. The reality is this: the presents are not
yours yet. Likewise, we dont hope for what we already have. Rather we must
set [our] hope fully on the grace thats coming to [us] at the revelation of Je-
sus Christ. Even now were the sons of God but it doesnt yet appear what we
shall be.
I believe that the helmet of salvation refers to salvation in its fullest sense
eternal salvation, coming into the presence of God, being transformed into
his likeness and being caught up in everlasting glory. Mother Theresa said,
when weve been in eternal glory well look back at our life on this earth as
one night spent in a bad hotel. Were entering into eternal gory. Well be
changed and what is mortal will be swallowed up by life.
We wont be swallowed up by death but by life. Thats our great salvation.
Thats when all the enigmas will be put right and all the unanswered ques-
tions will find their answers. It will be a salvation that overshadows and over-
whelms everything weve ever seen before. Here on earth we hear about the
tragic death of people that we know the hounding of Christians in Afghani-
stan and martyrs in China. We think, This is terrible. But heartbreak will
give way to salvation.
No turning back
Theres a salvation coming, so lets be good soldiers. Theres an ultimate hope
of salvation when well be completely changed and have new bodies for the
Spirit to live in. God has prepared things for us that havent even entered the
heart of man gifts under the Christmas tree that none of us could ever have
dreamed of.
Its a real battle and we must put on real armour. Set your hope fully says

20
Paul. Maybe you battle with desperate situations that seem to have no solu-
tion. This word is for you: Set your hope fully on the grace thats coming at
the revelation of Christ. Salvation lies ahead for you.
Youre facing a battle, so be strong. Youve got to be strong and take Gods
armour seriously. Your armour must come from God and you must put it on.
Realise this, its Gods armour and it doesnt cover your back. In Psalm 78 we
read, The sons of Ephraim fully armed for battle turned back. You could
write shame in the margin. There are so many wonderful battles in the Bi-
ble, so why did these men turn back?
God has equipped you with everything that you need, so dont run. God is
committed to you and with his help you can fight.

Peebles Baptist Church supports
four mission partners who (broadly
speaking) all work in the areas of
Development & People.
Development ministries aim to re-establish God-given dignity by providing
economic opportunity, community resilience and freedom from abuse. This
area of BMS work helps demonstrate Jesus love, compassion and concern to
some of the worlds poorest people.
Our partners are:
Andy and Jutta Cowie in Haiti,
Sara McArthur in Peru,
Ann and David MacFarlane in Italy,
Abi and Ally who are newly settled in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is one of the poorest and most densely populated countries in
the world, and is frequently hit by disasters. Cyclones, flash floods, tidal
surges, tornadoes and mudslides regularly claim many lives and destroy in-
frastructure. Around 45 % of the countrys people live below the poverty line,
with many surviving on less than 52p a day. It is a predominately Muslim
country with a very small Christian Minority (around 0.5%) of which half is
Roman Catholic. Baptists are the largest protestant group.
Abi and Ally have been sent out by Gerrard Street Baptist Church in Aber-
deen. They have a 2 year old son, Lachlan, and are expecting another little
one this month (October 2014).
Ally is a mechanical engineer, and has worked in the oil industry for 7 years,
and Abi has worked for over 9 years as a Specialist Speech and Language
Therapist for children with additional support needs. They first approached
BMS in 2011 and have been journeying towards serving abroad since that
time.
Because Bangladesh is a sensitive area of the world, where special security
measures apply, we cannot give more details about Abi and Ally, including
photographs, however this does not stop us praying for them as they start
out in a new country.
Prayer points:
For them to settle in quickly and make good friends amongst
their neighbours and colleagues;
For safety & health particularly with a new baby and a toddler;
That they will have a strong sense of being led by God as they
start out in a new country with many cultural differences.

22
The Eagle Family
Beira has been a real eye opener for us, it was one thing for us to imagine
what life living in Mozambique would be like, it was another thing to live
it. As we passed the holiday feeling and moved into the realities of life
here we found a real depth of beauty to the country. Its people are warm
and friendly but at the same time shy. Its landscape open and vast but at
the same time strange and constricting. As our language improved we felt
more comfortable wandering around, speaking
to people and going to new places. Beira became
our home a place we came to know well, and a
place where we met new friends.
Over the last year in Mozambique a few things
have changed from our original understanding
before we left the UK. Things which have im-
pacted upon us as individuals and as a family.
These changes have caused us over the last few
months to re-evaluate our position in Mozam-
bique and we have been seeking prayerful guid-
ance from God during this time. The outcome of
this is that we will no longer be working with
BMS from June this year.
It is sad when things dont go the way you thought, when after stepping
out in faith things change from what we thought the plan would be. It has
been a very difficult decision to make but one we feel is right at this time.
As we questioned what was happening and tried to work out where we
were we remembered the words of Proverbs 3 lean not on your own un-
derstanding. Whilst we struggle to grasp changes in circumstances, and
doubt ourselves and our decisions. It is comforting to know that we can
trust in God and let him makes our paths straight.
We trust that God will continue to use us in wherever we go to next and in

23
whatever we do next and we want to say a huge
thank you to you, for your prayers and support over
these last two years.
Whilst we never got to the stage of building specific
projects in Mozambique our time here has been
deeply rewarding for us and we hope encouraging
and supportive to those we have met and we are
thankful for this. When we did a video of our first
six months in Mozambique we tried to bring out the
great value of simply friendship and spending time
with people and this has been equally true of the
last six months as it was of the first.
We thank God that Rachel could help when new friends became sick,
sometimes badly. We thank God for the the equipment she brought with
her, much of it donated by friends in the UK which in some cases has
quite literally saved lives. We thank God for the equipment we have in
Beira which we could use to help others in their projects and work. We
are thankful for the friendships we have built as we worked alongside oth-
ers. We are thankful Tim could visit some farms and offer encouragement
and support to farmers in their work, and we are thankful for the recep-
tion we have always received when we visited these places. We have had
the opportunity to live in a cross-cultural setting, to experience different
ways of living, and to meet wonderful people, and no matter how long it
has been we thank God for this journey.
With love,
Rachel, Tim, Hannah & Sam

lenging book by popular speaker and Bible teacher, Jeff Lucas, takes a
light-hearted look at the Christian life. Jeff takes you on a memorable
journey through life's ups and downs, pointing out lessons that need to be
learned on the way.
Amazon customer review
An honest and rich experience, where the author delves into life's major
themes (relationships, death, sex, spirituality...) and craftily connects to-
gether his own higgledy-piggledy existence with lifes 'real' questions. It is
not a package of trite religious answers that you find in the pages of sto-
ries, but hilarious honesty, delightful discovery, ambitious adventures by
ordinary folk... It is to be savoured and enjoyed a story or 2 at a time To
NOT reflect on each story is to miss the authors intention and the read-
ers opportunity. It's Bill Bryson-type observation & everyday humour
meeting with an ordinary geezer asking life's little & big questions and
finding hope. Marvellous This is what paper was made for.

Following on from the very enjoyable evening at the
Buccleuch Arms last October, there will be another supper
for Christians involved in schools teachers, ANAs, sup-
port staff, admin staff, janitors, chaplains, SU group lead-
ers, peripatetic teachers, etc.
This years event will again be held at the Buccleuch Arms,
St Boswells, on the A68, on Thursday 30
th
October, 6.30
for 7.00pm. It will cost 21.50 for 2 courses plus tea/
coffee.
Our speaker this year will be Margaret MacDonald, the
Headteacher of Wallacestone Primary School in Falkirk.
Margaret has a long track record of introducing Christian
values in her school. She will also be bringing a class
teacher from the school Jackie Sihota who will share
something of her experience of implementing Christian
values in the classroom.
Please do put the date in your diary, and please pass the
information on to anyone who might be interested. Fur-
ther details with menu choices, etc. will follow shortly.
