Theorem Of Three Moments
This theorem is based on the application of the first and second Moment Area Theorems.
Let us consider two consecutive spans of a continuous beam ABC with two spans carrying same load. Fig
(a). Fig (b) shows the free B.M. diagrams for each of the two spans treating both beams AB and BC to be
freely supported and independent of each other. Under the effect of applied loads, let the beam ABC bend
and take up the shape A
1
BC
1
the support A and C sinking by different amount with respect to support B,
Draw A

BC

as tangent to the elastic curve at B and the intercepts made by this tangent on the verticals
through A & C be AA
2
and CC
2
. Fig (c) shows support B.M diagram.

Let l
1
= length of span AB l
2
= length of span BC
I
1
= Moment of Inertia of AB I
2
= Moment of Inertia of BC

from C
E

h
1
= sinking of support A with respect to support B
h
2
= sinking of support C with respect to support A

B
= Angle made by the tangent to the elastic curve at B with the horizontal.

A
1
A
2
is the deflection of the point A with respect to the tangent to the elastic curve at B and according to
the second moment area theorem, it is equal to the moment of the area of the M / EI diagram between A
and B about A.

But as before C
1
C
2
is the deflection of the point C with respect to the tangent to the elastic curve at B and
according to the second moment area theorem, it is equal to the moment of the area of the M / EI diagram
between B and C about C.

Note: h
1
& h
2
are taken as - ve in above equation if after sinking supports A and C lie below the support
of reference B.
Theorem of three moments gives the relation between support moments at A,B and C. This equation
can be extended for a beam having any number of spans. Applying this equation to a series of
consecutive spans, number of equations can be framed depending upon unknown support moments.
