Title: Jominy End Quench Test

Group Members: Megan Nazari, Andrew Jeffers, Eisa Ali, Mason Landrum
Instructor: Marty McFadden
Purpose:
To understand the effect of cooling rate on hardness of a steel.
Abstract:
n this la! we "uenched the end of a #$#% steel s&ecimen from '(%) to
the tem&erature of water *++),. t was determined that the hardness
of the s&ecimen went down as we tested further away from the !ottom
"uenched end. This is !ecause the "uic-er the steel was cooled, the
harder it got. The !ottom end was cooled much faster than the to& end
since it was touching the flowing water. This also means that the
further u& on the s&ecimen we went, the metal was less ductile and
more !rittle.

Procedure:
$. 8ractice transferring the s&ecimen from the furnace to the
"uench !uc-et. This should !e done in ( seconds or less.
+. Each grou& mem!er needs to !e aware of their res&onsi!ilities.
$. A grou& mem!er that transfers the s&ecimen.
+. A grou& mem!er that turns on the water when the s&ecimen is
&lace in the !uc-et.
0. A grou& mem!er res&onsi!le for timing the transfer and the
heat u& and cool down &rocesses.
#. A grou& mem!er res&onsi!le for ma-ing sure e3erything is done
safely.
0. 9es&onsi!ilities roles should !e &racticed !efore the actual
e:&eriment ta-es &lace.
#. Turn the furnace on and set the tem&erature to 5%% ).
(. 8lace the s&ecimen into the cruci!le with the &owdered car!on.
7eat u& the s&ecimen.
4. Fill the "uench !uc-et with water.
5. .et u& the Jominy end "uench !uc-et. Attach the hose to the
!ottom end of the !uc-et !y attaching the su&&ly hose and the
drain hose. .et the flow so that it the flow is + ; inches.
6. 1ry the s&ecimen fi:ture.
'. <hen the s&ecimen has !een heated and heat soa-ed and with the
cooling water flowing at the &ro&er rate in the Jominy End
Quench test !uc-et, remoce the s&ecimen from the furnace and
&lace it in the fi:ture on the to& of the Quench !uc-et, so that
the flanged end rests on the fi:ture and the "uench end is
immersed in the water flow. Ma-e sure the s&ecimen is not forced
out of the fi:ture !y the water flow and that the flanged end is
in contact with the fi:ture. =se the long tongs to hold the
s&ecimen in &lace if necessary.
$%. )lose the furnace door. Turn the furnace off.
$$. Allow the cooling water to flow o3er the "uenched end for
at least $% minutes.
$+. <hen the s&ecimen is sufficiently cooled, remo3e it form
the fi:ture using long tongs and su!merge it in the final "uench
!uc-et. .et it in a safe &lace. )autiously determine if it can
!e handled, if not, &lace !ac- into the !uc-ed.
$0. 8re&are the s&ecimen for hardness testing and measure the
hardness at gi3en inter3als of distance.
