The Universal Serial Bus provides a level of functionality and compatibility with peripherals never seen before. By enabling a truly plug-and-play platform, the sophisticated hardware and software behind USB remains practically invisible to most users.
Like all modern networking equipment, USB technology relies on high-speed, low-voltage components, which are easy damaged by induced disturbances. With the use of hubs and repeaters, a single USB port can host a large number of peripherals with significant interconnecting cable lengths. Without effective overvoltage protection, all connected equipment is left vunerable to costly damage from surges.
Drawing on technology developed specifically for high-speed networks, Novaris has developed a USB protector which guards aginst overvoltage disturbabces without degrading normal system operation.
Operation
A specialised chip, containing high-speed transil diodes, provides protection between each line and a circuit common point. This common point is earthed via the cable shield to the chassis of the USB host.
The circuit configuration minimises crosstalk between lines and virtually eliminates circuit loading due to component capacitance.
Installation
The USB protector is installed in line with the existing USB cable. Simply plug the protector into the USB port of the host or hub, and the equipment into the protectors integral socket.
