Mazagon Dock limited
History
Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) is one of Indias premier shipyards.
The company was originally established in 1774 and has passed through
various ownerships. On May 16, 1960, it was taken over by the GoI under
the administrative control of the Department of Defence Production
in the Ministry of Defence. Currently, MDL is actively involved in
shipbuilding; submarine construction; modernisation, reft and repair
of submarines and ships with facilities at Mumbai and Nhava. It also has
offces at Delhi, Paris and Moscow. On Sep19, 2006, MDL was granted
Category-I, Mini Ratna status by the GoI.
MDL has constructed nineteen frontline warships, two submarines and
auxiliary ships for the Indian Navy. Besides warships, it has constructed
paramilitary and civil ships for both domestic and overseas clients. MDL
has equipped ONGC with sixty-fve offshore platforms, offshore supply
vessels, jack-up rigs, a multipurpose support vessel and more than 500 km
of sub-sea piping. Besides construction, MDL has modernised and reftted
two submarines for the Indian Navy and repaired ships for the Coast Guard,
Indian Navy and civil sector.
Business Operations
MDL mainly caters to the strategic requirements of the Indian Navy.
MDLs current portfolio includes building three stealth frigates, three
missile destroyers and six submarines for the Indian Navy, one 2000 cu.m
cutter suction dredger for M/s Dredging Corporation of India, and two
multipurpose support vessels for a client in Singapore. MDL is also engaged
in modernising and reftting two more submarines for the Indian Navy.
Achievements
On the production front, the company achieved some major
targets. The value of production of the shipbuilding division rose to
Rs 11,698.4 mn in FY07 compared to Rs 4,613.8 mn in the previous year.
Similarly, the value of production on the submarine construction and
repairs has been Rs 6,973.8 mn compared to Rs 570.4 mn.
Future Plans
MDL has embarked on a modernisation project to bridge the gap
between available resources and the requirements of the Navy. It has also
proposed to set up an Engineering Design Centre through joint ventures.
Value of production is estimated to rise from Rs 18,722.4 mn in FY07 to over
Rs 23,000 mn in FY08. Target for FY09 is set at Rs 30,000 mn.
