TASK C : CRITICAL REFLECTION

This project consists of four parts. Part 1 involves reading and understanding the principles
on materials selection and adaptation. Part 2 integrates the planning of a 60- minute lesson and
designing the appropriate teaching and learning materials for the lesson. Part 3 concerns the
design of a check list to evaluate the teaching and learning materials. Part 4 entails a reflection of
the experience and value of the whole assignment.
The selection of teaching and learning materials is an integral part of curriculum planning
and delivery in schools. Children and students come into contact with a vast array of print, visual
and multimedia materials in their daily lives. Educators have a duty of care to ensure that the
teaching and learning materials with which children and students are presented, or towards which
they are directed, are appropriate to their developmental growth and relevant to the achievement of
appropriate learning outcomes ( Department of Education and Children's Services, 2004).
After I had done my coursework, I gained a lot of new knowledge regarding to the
development of teaching materials. Besides the teachers' qualifications and the school facilities,
another important determinant of quality of education is the teaching and learning materials. It is
essential for quality materials to be made available to the teachers and pupils in adequate
quantities to support the teaching and learning processes. Teaching aids are important to the
teachers because they would help them to explain more to the students.
We are required to complete four tasks. The first task is a group work where we have to find
and read articles on principles of materials selection and adaptation from a variety of sources .
After we have select the articles, we have to use our computer skills to present the information in
the form of short notes using suitable graphic organiser. As a group, my friends and I decided to
have five mind maps for each language skills based on KSSR Year 3. While creating the mind map
based on the articles and the book that I have read really opens my eyes that there are a lot of
different materials that I could use in my lesson. The materials also have their own implication to
the lesson. It will affect the teaching styles and the learning styles of the pupils.
The second task is an individual task where I have to develop some teaching aids for a
lesson plan. Here I have to plan and write a lesson plan for a 60 minute lesson based on the KSSR
syllabus. Besides that, I have to adapt, design and exploit the teaching and learning materials for
the lesson planned. I also have to explicit the teaching and learning materials produced for the
lesson I have provided. Planning and designing a lesson is not a new area of learning to us as we
have been practicing in planning a lesson for the past five semester already.

By doing this task, it helps me to improve my way in designing lesson plan that meets with
the requirement needed especially by considering the factors of materials selection and the
students level and abilities in learning English subject . Before this, I thought that the purpose of
having material for a lesson is to add a fun and more hands on experience to the learning. I never
thought that I could have a really big impact to the lesson that it could change the style of teaching
and learning. I also never contemplate the possibility that the pupils will have problem in using a
material that I have design for a lesson due to the fact that it didnt suit their proficiency level.
The third task is designing a checklist to evaluate the teaching and learning materials for
the lesson that I have plan before . This task is a group work. Preparing the checklist is a new
scope for me and my group member to learn. It is quite hard because we have to really understand
the lesson plan and relate it with the factors in selection and evaluation of teaching materials.
The last part is writing a critical reflection in about 800 1000 words on the experience and
value of the whole assignment. Teaching and learning materials are very important to English
language teachers. The uses of teaching and learning materials are the best teaching aids which
can help our pupils to understand what we are teaching. The lesson will be more effectives and
interesting to the learners.
As a conclusion, from doing this assignment I have learned that selecting and adapting a
material is not something to take lightly. We need to consider some basic principles in order to get
the best material that we can. I also found that having the checklist is really helpful. It help to guide
and reminds me to check and add on not just functionality to the teaching aids that I develop but
also makes it meaningful and beneficial to my lesson .
