Dvorak is an alternative to Qwerty. It is a keyboard layout designed to minimize movement, and make
typing as easy and painless as possible. The idea behind it is to have the most commonly typed keys
under the ngers, and make it as easy as possible to type common words and combinations o! letters.
To give an impressions o! "ust how big a di#erence this makes, consider that the average Dvorak typist$s
ngers will travel about one mile in a day o! typing. % Qwerty typist$s will travel anything !rom &' to ()
miles. Try to consider, !or a moment, the e#ect that must have on your ngers.
Dvorak is easy to pick up, taking about hal! as long as Qwerty. That is little com!ort to those who are
already !amiliar with Qwerty, as it means starting over. *owever, the benets certainly make it worth
spending a couple o! weeks learning to type all over again. +or many o! us, that is actually a benet,
since many computer users never learned to type properly in the rst place.
An optical or laser mouse, in most cases, works as well or better than an older rollerball mouse, often called a
mechanical mouse. But in certain situations rollerball mice have advantages over their newer counterparts. When
cost is a primary issue, or when working on specific surfaces, rollerball mice still outperform other devices.
Sur&aes
While optical mice work on many surfaces, they often do not track properly on glass or smooth
mirrored surfaces. This problem stems from the way optical mice use imperfections in a surface to read
movement, and the tendency for the mouse's light to pass through glass rather than rebound back. If

you wish to use a mouse on a particularly smooth or transparent surface, a rollerball mouse will result
in better movement detection.
%rie
While mouse technology continues to lower in overall price, rollerball mice are usually available
for considerably less than optical mouse equivalents. Users looking for cheap, functional mice can
usually find rollerball devices for only a few dollars.
Com#atibility
ince many rollerball mice were constructed for use with older systems, they more often use the
!"# port for connection. If you have an older system without U$ compatibility, or a system with
limited U$ access, a rollerball mouse will offer compatibility with the older connection technology. %
simple !"# to U$ adapter will make an older rollerball mouse compatible with nearly any modern
computer system as well.
<e#airs
&any optical mice give users no method of access to the working components of the device, and
their comple'ity make user repairs unfeasible. If a rollerball mouse does not operate correctly, opening
and making basic cleaning repairs can restore its functionality. &ost rollerball devices have a small
removable plate that allows access to the ball and internal structure of the mouse.
