FAQ Applications 2013-2015

1. In which language should I apply (Letter of application, Reference letters, academic
papers...)?

Your application can be made in any of the languages used in the Consortium. Please note,
however, that your application should be read easily by the members of your home university
(2&3 semester university). We therefore advise you to write it accordingly: i.e., if your home
university is Santiago de Compostela, it is best to apply in Spanish, if it is Saint Andrews, then
use English. Note that for Adam Mickiewicz University you can apply in French, Spanish or
Italian.
Applications in English are usually understood by the vast majority of academic members.

2. What are the language requirements? How can I prove my language skills?

The minimum language requirement is B2 according to the scale of European language
certification standards (see annex 1), though a C1 equivalent is generally preferable. This
corresponds to near fluency and capacity to understand, write and speak at proficient level.

Please include any relevant document proving your level such as international language
certificates (CLES, DELF, DELE, TOEFL or TOEIC among others).
Your degree can be a proof of your language skills only if language is the main field of study of
your degree. For example, if you graduate in French Literature or French Studies, then your
degree will be sufficient to prove your skills in French to us. Otherwise you need to provide us
with an internationally acknowledged test certificate.

Please note, however, that certain partner universities, especially in the UK, have stricter and
more specific language requirements, partly on account of national visa regulations (see language
requirements information on the Crossways website).

Please also note that any false declaration may lead to serious difficulties when you want to enter
the country and follow courses there.
We therefore advise you to pay special attention to this aspect and be as truthful as possible.

3. In which language are the courses?

Courses are generally given in the national languages of the universities, though there may be
some exceptions. For instance, in Perpignan several courses are taught in English and Spanish and
at Adam Mickiewicz University (Poland) the teaching languages are French, Spanish and Italian.
Polish is recommended but not at all necessary, providing you have some knowledge of English.
In New Lisbon University several courses are also in English.
As a rule, you should be prepared to take classes given in the local language of the country you
are staying in (i.e., English for Sheffield, Italian in Bergamo).

4. Can I apply if I finish my BA this academic year?

Yes you can. Should you not hold your final diploma, you must provide us with your transcripts
(i.e., your more recent available marks) as well as a certificate or official letter stating that you are
currently finishing your BA and indicating when you are to graduate. Please send us your degree
Diploma as soon as you receive it.

5. Is there an age limit to apply?

No. We welcome applications from candidates of all ages.

6. What is an academic paper?

An academic paper is an essay, a dissertation or any kind of written work you produced during
your studies. It can be published or unpublished. It should preferably be related to the fields of the
program (i.e., cultural narratives, literature, visual arts, history of ideas, media studies,
philosophy, humanities) but this is not compulsory. This work will give us an overview of your
academic level.

7. Are there length restrictions for the academic papers?

Yes from 2 pages and up to 20 pages. You may include essays or dissertations (up to 20 pages).
The members of the academic council like to know what you are capable of, but remember that
quality matters more than quantity.

8. Is there a minimum Grade Point Average required to be eligible to apply?

Non, there is not a minimum GPA required but you need to provide it, specifying the scale used
on section 4 of student application form (University academic qualifications)
