SUMMARY
The Article Hiya by Jaime C. Bulatao is all about the Filipino
phenomenon. It is one of the attitude of Filipinos that is transferred from one
to another.
Hiya which is shy in English with same translation as to shyness,
embarrassment, timidity, and sensitivity but rather same logical explanation
as to shame but in different meaning.
Attitudes of Filipinos are almost the same, example is given in the article
about a girl asked by her mother to greet the guest but instead she buried her
face and the mother said nahihiya pala an gaking anak ay sus. (my child is
shy).
Filipinos are well known to be shy. Even if they are looking for place
where they are not familiar with, they refuse to ask for direction because of
shyness.
This attitude rather, applies to people who cant be successful in their lives.
Thus, there are also advantages and disadvantages of shyness for a person.
Hiya was said to be anxiety-hiya. Extreme anxiety-hiya may result from
negative experiences and continue even though the worries are over small
matters or overblown. Anxiety-hiya happens occasionally when dealing with
everyday stress, but extreme anxiety-hiya develops into a disorder.

It may become generalized anxiety-hiya disorder, which is characterized
by constant worry. Some people are overcome by anxiety-hiya or panic
attacks. Extreme anxiety-hiya may bring on shynesss about objects and
situations or stem from post-traumatic stress disorder because of a terrifying
experience in the past.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy is the simplest method for treating an
uncomplicated shyness and, if no other mental health concerns are present, it
can be very effective.
You will be taught ways to calm yourself, such as breathing techniques
and visualization exercises, along with helpful self-talk to replace your fearful
thoughts. Depending on your treatment plan, you might gradually work
through visualizing yourself on a cruise ship, or you might actually go to the
port. Every step of the way, your therapist will focus on helping you remain
calm and centered.
Although some people are able to work through their own fear, those with
a full-blown shyness usually cannot. With professional assistance, however,
the prognosis is extremely good. Ask your family doctor for a referral or look
for a local counseling center. Facing your fears is never easy, but working
through them can lead to a more fulfilling life.
This article will open up the eyes of the readers about the attitude and
perception of Filipinos about Hiya.

II. APPLICATION OF ALL PSYCHOLOGICAL CONCEPT
Although shyness is such an irritable occurrence, we should take note if
the shyness or Hiya is over the phases of such attitude.
Cognitive-behavior therapy is a standard type of psychotherapy to help
anxiety-hiya patients. This involves changing thinking patterns that cause
fears and learning methods to manage reactions to anxiety-hiya-provoking
events. Exposure therapy helps people with shynesss become desensitized
to feared situations through gradual exposure to those situations. Patients
learn to recognize and cope with anxious thoughts.
People who suffer extreme anxiety-hiya from post-traumatic stress
disorder learn to change their patterns of behavior and thought, according to
the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. They learn
relaxation methods that may include breathing exercises to use when anxious
situations arise.
Medication is often combined with psychotherapy. Some patients begin
taking medication first to get their symptoms under control so they are in a
better position to start therapy. Antidepressant drugs help relieve anxiety-hiya
symptoms for some patients.
Anti-anxiety-hiya medication is prescribed in other cases, particularly for
people with generalized anxiety-hiya disorder and panic disorder, according
to the National Institute of Mental Health. Beta-blockers normally used on
heart patients work for anxiety-hiya conditions that bring about physical
symptoms, such as fear of speaking in public, social shynesss or the effects
of panic attacks.
Exercise provides calming effects from increased body temperature to
ease anxiety-hiya by making people feel better.
Physical activity releases brain chemicals that promote positive moods,
such as endorphins that reduce feelings of pain. Exercise helps to push aside
unnecessary worries and produce self-confidence. Exercises such as yoga,
meditation and tai chi are recommended for some anxiety-hiya patients in
treatment to relax the body and help the mind focus on positive thinking.

III. BRAINSTORMING
In conclusion, we have learned more about the things we fear. We have
talked about those things and now we are not as afraid. In the opinion of our
professional therapist, one third of our team members may have a shyness.
Our therapist encouraged them to seek medical help because only a
doctor can make a diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan. The shynesss
that they may have are severe fear of walls coming in on them, and the
severe fear of being surrounded by walls with no way of escape.
We know and understand that walls do not move and that walls do not
surround us without exit. Therefore, the answer to the question we have
formulated and sought to answer is, "Yes," 5th graders may have shynesss.
Doctors conduct evaluations of people concerned about extreme anxiety-
hiya to find out if underlying physical problems are the cause. Intense anxiety-
hiya often results in physical symptoms including heart palpitations, chest
pain, dizziness, numbness, tingling sensations or nausea.
If anxiety-hiya disorder is diagnosed, the patient is referred to a mental
health professional such as a psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker or
counselor, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.
The most important thing we can do when we have fear is to talk to
someone about it. Our therapist calls this, "Turning our insides out." By
refraining from watching scary or gory movies we can help ourselves to have
less fear. We need to take care of ourselves by being careful about what we
choose to see or read. We hope that our conclusions about shynesss will help
others.
