ADVANCED STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS (Civil Engineering ) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks
1. Analyze the portal frame ABCD shown in gure below moment distribution method and draw the bending moment diagram. Take span AD=5.4mand height of the portal AB=4.4m. Length BC=4.4m. The frame is subjected to a horizontal load of 90 kN at C. 2. A portal frame ABCD is hinged at support A and xed at D. The span AD=6.5m and the Height AB=CD=4.5m. It carries a point load of 50 kN in span BC at a distance of 3m from B. Analyze the frame by strain energy method and draw bending moment diagram. Takes EI=1. 3. A system of four loads 90,150,130 and 110 kN crosses a simply supported beam of span 22m with the 110 kN load leading. The loads are equally spaced at 1m. Using inuence lines, determine the maximum bending moment at a section 9m from left support. Also calculate the absolute maximum shear force and bending moment in the beam. 4. A three hinged parabolic arch has a span of 24m and a central rise of 4m. Draw the inuence line diagrams for the positive and negative bending moments at a section 7m from the left hinge due to a rolling point load of 15 kN. Using this, calculate the maximum positive and negative bending moments at the section. Also calculate the position and magnitude of absolute maximum bending moment. 5. A portal frame ABCD is hinged at A and D. The span AD=6.3m and height AB=CD=4.3m. A point load of 32 kN is acting at the mid point of BC. Analyze the portal frame by exibility method and draw the bending moment diagram. Take EI=1 for members AB and CD and EI=2 for BC. 6. Explain the various steps involved in the analysis of a simple Grid structure by stiness method. Drive all the necessary equations required for the analysis. 7. A three span continuous beam ABCD is xed at A and D is continuous over B and C. AB=1.5L: BC=0.90L: CD=L. Spans AB,BC and CD are subjected to central point loads of 2W, 1.5w and W respectively. Calculate the value of W at collapse if the beam has a uniform plastic moment of resistance 2M p . 8. Derive expressions for shear force and bending moment of a semi innite beam resting on an elastic medium with usual notations. List out various assumptions made.

Find the moments and reactions at all supports and draw the bending moment diagram using strain energy method. 3. Draw the inuence line diagram for shear force and bending moment for a section at 6m from the left hand support of a simply supported beam 22m long. Hence calculate the maximum bending moment and shear force at the section due to the rolling of UDL of 9m length and 20kN/m intensity. 4.
