DearParent(s)&Student,

Asnewtechnologiescontinuetochangetheworldinwhichwelive,theyalsohavethe
potentialtoprovidemanynewandpositiveeducationalbenefitsforclassroominstruction.
Therefore,wehavedecidedtoimplementBringYourOwnTechnology(BYOT)atour
school.Inthisinitiative,studentsareencouragedtobringtheirowntechnologydevicesto
schooltoenhancetheirlearningexperiences.Thisdocumentisanexplanationofthekey
componentsofthisinitiativeaswellasacontractofexpectationsaroundresponsibleuse
oftechnologyinourlearningenvironments.Pleasenote:Ifbringingpersonaltechnologyis
notpossible,pleasespeakwiththeclassroomteachers,whowillmakeeveryeffortto
arrangeaccesstotheschoolsequipment.

DefinitionofTechnology
ForpurposesofBYOT,Technologymeansaprivatelyownedwirelessand/orportable
electronichandheldequipmentthatincludes,butisnotlimitedto,existingandemerging
mobilecommunicationsystemsandsmarttechnologies,portableinternetdevices,
handheldentertainmentsystemsorportableinformationtechnologythatcanbeusedfor
wordprocessing,wirelessInternetaccess,image/sound/videocapture&recording,and
informationtransmitting/receiving/storing,etc.

Internet
Onlytheinternetgatewayprovidedbytheschoolmaybeaccessedwhileonschool
premises.Personalinternetconnectivedevicessuchas,butnotlimitedtocellphones/cell
networkadaptersarenotpermittedtobeusedtoaccessoutsideinternetsourcesatany
time.

SecurityandDamages
Responsibilitytokeeptechnologysecurerestswiththeindividualowner.Shaughnessy
ElementarySchoolanditsstaffmembersarenotliableforanytechnologystolenorfor
damagestotechnologywhileatschool.Staffmemberswillsuperviseandmonitortheuse
oftechnologyineachclassroom,butthecareandhandlingoftechnologyisthe
responsibilityofeachstudent.Itisrecommendedthatyouaddcustomtouchesto
technologytobeabletodistinguishyourtechnologyfromothers.Thismayincludehaving
youritemmarkedwithyourfamilyname(takingthebatteryoutandwritingitontheinside)
Additionally,protectivecasesfortechnologyareencouraged.

Privacy
StudentswillfollowschoolpoliciesforappropriateusewhenusingInternetbased
applications&services.Accessinganyoftheseexternalapplicationsorservicesareto
extendandenhancelearningandstudentconductwillbeasiftheyareontheinternal
schoolnetwork.Studentshavenoexpectationofprivacyasitistheroleoftheschooland
districttechnologyteamandadministratorstomonitoruseraccountsforpolicyandsecurity
enforcement.StudentemailisarchivedandthestudentAcceptableUsePolicywillbe
enforced.Parentsareresponsibleformonitoringtheirchildsuseofapplicationswhen
accessingprogramsfromhome.Itisexpectedthatstudentsdemonstratepersonal
responsibilityandwillbeaccountableforchoicestheymakewhenusingtechnologyfor
learning.

BYOTStudentAgreement
Theuseoftechnologytoprovideeducationalmaterialandenhancelearningisnota
necessitybutaprivilege.Astudentdoesnothavetherighttousetechnologywhileat
school,andisexpectedtomakeresponsiblechoicesinitsuse.Ifanyoftheconditionsare
broken,privilegeswillbetakenaway.Whentechnologyisrespectedandusedresponsibly
itcanbenefitthestudents'engagementandattitudestowardslearningpursuits.Students
andparents/guardiansparticipatinginBYOTmustcomplywithShaughnessysCodeof
Conduct,aswellasallVSBpoliciesregardingtheuseoftechnology,itsAcceptableUse
PolicyandInternetSafetyPolicy.Furthermore,thestudentmustagreetothefollowing
conditions:

Thestudenttakesfullresponsibilityfortheirtechnology.Thismeansstoringitin
teacherapprovedplacesintheclassroom.Theschoolisnotresponsibleforthe
securityofstudentownedtechnology.
Thetechnologyshouldbetransportedinanappropriatecarryingcaseandtheuse
ofaprotectivecoverisencouraged.
Thetechnologyisforlearningpurposesonly,andmustremaininsidetheclassroom
atalltimesandtakenhomeattheendoftheschoolday.
Thetechnologymustbeinsilentmodewhileonschoolproperty(unlessotherwise
authorizedbytheclassroomteacher).
Thetechnologymaynotbeusedtocheatorplagiarizeworkthatisnotyourown.
Thetechnologymaynotbeusedatschoolfornoninstructionalpurposes.
Thestudentmayonlyaccessfilesoninternalorexternalsitesorstorageservices
whicharerelevanttotheclassroomcurriculum.
Thestudentwillcomplyimmediatelywithteachers'requesttoshutdowntechnology
orclosethescreen.
Thestudentunderstandsthatbringinganymalwaredesignedtodamage,alter,
destroy,orprovideaccesstounauthorizeddataorinformationisinviolationofthe
VSBpolicyandwillresultinseriousdisciplinaryactions.
Thestudentrealizesthatprocessingoraccessinginformationonschoolproperty
relatedtohacking,altering,orbypassingnetworksecuritypoliciesisinviolationof
theVSBpolicyandwillresultinseriousdisciplinaryactions.
Theschooldistricthastherighttocollectandexamineanydevicethatissuspected
ofcausinganydisruptiontothenetwork,orhasbeenusedinanycyberbullying
incidents.
Thestudentrealizesthatprintingfrompersonaltechnologydeviceswillnotbe
possibleatschool.Thisisforlogisticalreasonsbutmoreimportantly,
environmentalonesaswell.

Iunderstandandwillabidebytheabovepolicyandguidelinesatalltimeswhenusing
technologyforlearning.Irealizethatusingtechnologyisaprivilege,andnotaright.Itisthe
roleofanyschoolstafftoensurethatIammakingtherightchoiceswhenusingmypersonal
technology,andImaylosethatprivilegeandwillacceptthatconsequenceinan
appropriatemanner.Ifurtherunderstandthatanyviolationtotheaboveconditionsmay
resultinthelossofusingpersonalandschooltechnologyaswellasotherdisciplinary
action.Bysigningmynamebelow,meansIfullyunderstandandagreetohonorthis
contractbecauseIwishtoparticipateinthisexcitinglearninginitiative.
