May Section Event Tour
ALTASTEEL Ltd.

Impressive scenes awaited the tour group (AM).
ASME NAS members and guests visited the Altasteel mill in
Edmonton on May 16, 2014. Attendees observed the scrap
steel manufacturing processes, including loading scrap,
melting in an electric arc furnace, hot steel tap, forming and
rolling and automatic packing at the yard for distribution. The
group was fortunate to have five very knowledgeable and
enthusiastic tour guides and got to see all of the facility
equipment in action, which they were told is rare for a tour.
The attendees agreed that this was a very memorable event,
and on behalf of the attendees the NAS Executive Committee
would like thank Altasteel for their kind hospitality. (AM)

Andr-Michel Ferrari of Enbridge Pipelines was the expert speaker during the
Technical Dinner Meeting on September 8, 2014. The event was held at the
University of Alberta Faculty Club, which not only provided an excellent buffet
dinner but also a pleasant atmosphere for socializing and networking. The subject of
the evenings presentation was Root Cause Analysis (RCA). Attendees were
introduced to the fundamentals of the RCA methodology and how it applies to
various industry settings with examples of how it may even be useful for everyday
life.
Andr-Michel Ferrari, P.Eng., is a Reliability Manager with Enbridge Pipelines
(Liquid Pipelines Division) with over 20 years of industrial experience in Reliability

April Section Event Conference
ASME Early Career Forum
ASME NAS is pleased to report the success of the ASME Early Career Forum 1 - Advancing Your Engineering Career.
This Forum, which took place April 26, 2014 at Edmontons Westin hotel, was the first of a series of four Early Career Forums
and was a joint effort of ASMEs Old Guard, District D, International Petroleum Technology Institute (IPTI), and Northern
Alberta Section. The Forum which was tailored for recent engineering graduates and engineering students, was well attended with
over 40 in-person participants. Some participants travelled from as far away as Texas and Columbia. There was also a webinar
component with over 70 online participants. The speakers, some of who are shown below, consisted of industry experts and
ASME leaders, both local and from abroad, representing companies such as Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Elements
Offshore, Innovation Scientific LLC, STCerri International, Jacobs Canada Inc., Canadian National Energy Board, Enbridge Inc.,
C-FER Technologies, Baker Hughes, and Hess Corporation. Although this Forum series has an Oil and Gas theme, with
presentations such as Creating a Distinguished Career, Dealing with Human Resources - Engineer to Leader, ASME - Your
Career Partner, Deliberately Choosing your Employer, and Safety and Ethics in the Workplace, the material covered is
definitely relevant to todays early career engineers working in any industry and anywhere in the world. ASME NAS would like to
take this opportunity to thank all of those who participated in making this event a resounding success. Please watch for future
updates regarding dates and locations for the remaining events in this Early Career Forum series. (DJS)
