American literature is the literature written or produced in the

area of the United States and its preceding colonies. For more specifc
discussions of poetry and theater, see Poetry of the United
States and Theater in the United States. During its early history,
America was a series of British colonies on the eastern coast of the
presentday United States. Therefore, its literary tradition !egins as
lin"ed to the !roader tradition of #nglish literature. $owe%er, uni&ue
American characteristics and the !readth of its production usually now
cause it to !e considered a separate path and tradition.

After studies at 'illiam and (ary )ollege, *e+erson read law and
!ecame a planter and lawyer, from -./0 he was a mem!er of the
1irginia $ouse of Burgesses.
2n -..3 his 4Summary 1iew of the 5ights of British America4 made him
famous as an early ad%ocate of American independence. A delegate to
the )ontinental )ongress, he was appointed to the committee to draft
the Declaration of 2ndependence, and !ecame its principal author.
After ser%ing as go%ernor of 1irginia 6-..07-8, he was a
delegate to the )ongress 6-.797:8, where he drafted territorial
pro%isions that were included in the ;orthwest <rdinances. 2n -.7: he
was appointed U.S. minister to France. 2n -.0= >eorge 'ashington
appointed him the frst U.S. secretary of state, he resigned in -.09
o%er con?ict with Ale@ander $amilton. $is wideranging Notes on the
State of Virginia 6-.738 enhanced his already high intellectual
reputation and e@tended it into the felds of science and general
scholarship.*e+erson !ecame %ice president in -.0. under Pres. *ohn
Adams, whom he succeeded in -7=-.
As president, he o%ersaw the Aouisiana Purchase and authoriBed
the Aewis and )lar" #@pedition. $e a%oided entanglement in the
;apoleonic 'ars !y signing the #m!argo Act. 2n -7=0 he retired to his
home, (onticello, to pursue his many interests in science, philosophy,
and architecture. Possi!ly the most !roadly learned citiBen of the entire
country, he amassed an impressi%e li!rary, which would !ecome the
core of the Ai!rary of )ongress when the latter was !urnt in the 'ar of
-7-C. 2n -7-0 he founded and designed the Uni%ersity of 1irginia.
