Final Paper
Guidelines
Analyze the cases
presented on the other
side of the page. Explain
possible reasons and
identify factors for
failure or success, if any,
to deliver an effective
speech; provide clear
and feasible solutions to
help the speakers
succeed in their speech
(whether now or in the
future). Since this is a
major paper, it is highly
unlikely that a 2-page
paper may merit a good
grade.
You may check for
sources online but be
sure to cite them in your
references.

Case Analysis
Speech Communication 2nd Quarter
CASE 1. The Case of Jud H in his neighborhood
Jud H. moved to a new neighborhood. When his sons teacher
heard that he was an aerospace engineer, she asked if he would
speak to her eight-grade science class about the possibilities of
space travel. This was a subject Jud knew very well and he loved
to talk about it. The audience a class of thirteen-year-olds
was not a threat to him. He was confident that he knew more
about astrophysics than any kid in the class. He also understood
that if his talk went badly, the consequences would not affect his
career. In any event, the likelihood of a successful talk was quite
high. Not surprisingly, he gave the talk with confidence and
received spontaneous applause from the class. When he finished
the talk, the students asked him many questions, which he was
well-prepared to answer. He thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

QUESTION 2. The Case of the same Jud H in his workplace
Jud H was also scheduled to give a presentation at Lockheed
Martin, the aerospace company where he had been recently
hired. He was concerned about making a good presentation on
the other engineers and considered this his coming-out party.
He believed he was an effective talker in one-to-one situations,
but hed never felt comfortable talking in large professional
settings. He usually avoided public speaking in professional
situations whenever possible. A few days before his talk, Jud
learned that several of the Vice Presidents, as well as the CEO of
the company, were planning to attend his presentation.

Based on how important the outcome of his
presentation was to him, Jud actively dreaded giving this talk for
two weeks, and his wife complained about how irritable hed
become. He convinced himself that his audience of new
colleagues would think he was a lightweight and unworthy of
holding an esteemed position in the company. When Jud finally
made his presentation, he experienced feelings of panic. Later,
he could barely remember anything he said.

CASE 3. The Case of Barbara G.
I hope I dont come off sounding like a complete jerk! My temples are throbbing Im not sure my
opening joke is going to go over I can barely breathe why dont they just call me up there now?
Forget these endless announcements and introductions maybe it wont be so bad this time and I
wont forget all the oh, no theres the regional manager.

Recently promoted from chemist to manager, Barbara was usually very confident.
Speech giving was the task she disliked the most about her new managerial position. She
believed that with each new leadership meeting she ran, there was a greater chance shed
expose her poor communications skills.

Ive got to focus on my first three points theyre the key to my talk Oh God, theres Richard hes
been salivating over my job he looks so smug please dont let me forget my opening

When Barbaras name was announced, a new wave of panic swept over her. She thought
of her opening joke and decided it wouldnt get any laughs. As she rose from her chair,
her attention wavered between her shaking knees, the people in the audience, and how
important this talk would be for her career. Suddenly concerned she had forgotten her
opening points, she tried to run through them in her head. Then, as she reached the
podium, she heard a flashback of the disastrous talk shed given at last years promo
meeting.

Why is Richard smirking? Look at my hands; theyre shaking whats Richard whispering to the
regional manager? My throat feels like its closing up Ive got to calm down! I cant remember
anything are the two of them laughing? My throat is so tight

Although Barbara looked calm on the outside, her insides were in knots and her
thoughts were scattered. As she attempted to present the three basic points of her
speech, she realized she was already discussing the third point but had failed to mention
two. When she tried to go back to the other points, she tripped over her words. Poor
Barbara!
