Dear Sirs



After extended use of cylinder liners, cylinder liners will show
signs of wear and tear. This wear is not evenly distributed.
Most of the wear occurs between the reversal points of the
upper and lower piston rings. And we find scuffing marks
where the upper piston ring changes direction. Also most
cylinder liners, especially of 4-stroke engines, will become
slightly oval over time.

This wear is increased lubricating oil consumption.
If the surface becomes too smooth due to wear and/or
glazing of the surface, the piston rings will easier break the
oil film, causing even more wear. Also, in this case, any
excess oil can no longer be retained by the liner surface,
and will burn away instead. This causes increased lubricating
oil consumption.

Honing becomes desirable when rings and liners are
suffering from scuffing. It improves service life of the liners
and rings. Honing also rectifies the shape of the line and
restores the surface cross pattern. The piston rings
running-in is improved and the lube-oil consumption is
markedly reduced.

The benefits of cylinder li ner honing:

Remove ovality, deformations and scratch marks in the
cylinder liner wall.
Produce a mesh of various depths in the material for the
purpose of allowing the cylinder lube oil to remain in the
mesh grooves for better lubrication.
Achieve a fine surface for piston ring contact in a second
step (plateau honing).
Remove the hardness in the liner wall surface.

So, every overhaul in which the piston rings are replaced, the cylinder liners must be re-honed.

There are two ways to do this as below.
The cylinder liners can be honed at onboard by STX Marine service specialists using a special concentric
honing device. Nevertheless, we only recommend this solution when there is no possibility to have this work
done in a workshop ashore, as it is very difficult to ensure the necessary quality can be achieved with variable
vessel heeling and trim conditions.
The cylinder liners can be honed in STX Marine service workshop. We strongly recommend this solution as
the workshop is the best environment for achieving the best quality results with a special honing machine and
measurements before/after.
