The Tradition Continues with
Boral Selector+
Borals new Selector+ is available now. Enhancing the
tradition of the original Selector, the new Selector+ has
all the features which the industry has grown to expect
from Boral Plasterboards flagship publication
plus many new ones.
Developed to suit the needs of the Australian building
industry, the Selector+ contains a number of innovative
features designed to make system selection simple
and effective.
The Selector+ is divided into four clearly separated
sections accompanied by detailed Contents tables and
a Quick-Find Index at the end of the document. Each
page is also clearly marked and numbered to indicate
where the reader is within the document.
Whilst Section A contains general information that the
specifiers and users of plasterboard systems will find
extremely useful, Section B provides comprehensive
and up-to-date performance data on over 300 systems
available from Boral Plasterboard.
To facilitate selection and specification of an appropriate
plasterboard system, Section C provides extensive
information on structural performance of various
systems listed in section B. It has also been extended
to include Shelf Load Tables for steel stud walls.
A major addition in the Selector+ is Section D, which
contains a large number of installation details for walls
and ceilings, including plasterboard fixing, head and base
details, junctions and service penetration details.
A first among plasterboard manufacturers anywhere
around the world, Boral Plasterboard has developed a
system identification methodology that reflects the basic
make-up (i.e. substrate and lining) of its systems. Based
on a number of simple principles, this methodology
brings substantial benefits to the users by eliminating
confusion and removing the need to refer to the source
document for the description of the basic system.
For example, a conventional timber framed wall system
with a single layer of 10mm Boral Standard Core
plasterboard each side is called T1010 and a ceiling
system with a single layer of 10mm Boral UniSPAN
plasterboard is now known as C10U. The Selector+
provides a detailed explanation of the new system
referencing methodology so that the users can easily
interpret the names even of the most complex systems.
For those who prefer to use electronic rather than the
printed medium, the Selector+ is available on the Boral
website at www.boral.com.au/selector+
You can order your copy of the Selector+ at the above
website or by calling Boral TecASSIST on 1800 811 222.

With abnormal wet weather lashing Australias East Coast
in recent months, we provide our recommendations to
assist when dealing with water damaged Boral plasterboard.
The following is intended only as a guide to the repair and
re-decoration of water damaged plasterboard walls and ceilings.
Health and Safety Precautions
If infection or sickness from the residue of contaminated
floodwaters or mould is a concern, seek advice from your
Health Inspector or relevant authority.
Prior to doing any repair work, ensure that power is switched
off before cutting through walls or ceilings where live wires
may be present.
To prevent electrocution do not use an electric drill or saw.
Place temporary props under sagging ceilings before relieving
water build up.
Draining Standing Water
Wall Cavities
Check whether water is present by removing skirting board,
drilling holes above the bottom plate, or in the case of metal stud
wall, by drilling through the channel at floor level.
If water is present in the cavities, cut a hole large enough to drain
the water completely. Repeat this process at each stud cavity.
Sagging or saturated ceilings can be dangerous and must be
drained with care.
Starting from the perimeter, away from the worst sagging area,
holes should be poked through, progressively working towards
the centre of the sag, allowing the water to exit slowly.
After standing water has been completely drained, an assessment
can be made on whether to remove and replace, or repair the
plasterboard. Removal and replacement of plasterboard may be
required due to:
Paper delamination
Fastener pull through
Excessive sag
Saturated insulation needs to be removed.
Abnormal weather has made the start of 2008 miserable for
many Australians. (c) Newspix / 'Adam Head'
Assessing and Repairing Wa
It is strongly recommended that water damaged plasterboard is inspected
by a manufacturers representative in order to determine the extent of repairs
required. Repairs to water damaged fire and acoustic-rated walls and
ceilings must be in accordance with manufacturers advice to ensure that
the required ratings are maintained.

MARCH 2008
Drying Out
Before any evaluation is made, boards should be allowed to dry
out thoroughly.
Adequate ventilation, air circulation, and drying, are of critical
importance to minimise the potential for mould growth.
The building should be dried out, even those walls that did not
require draining of cavities. Both sides of internal walls, and the
inner side of external walls, should be ventilated. If necessary,
cut ventilation holes near the base of each wall cavity.
Lower the humidity to facilitate drying. This can be achieved by
opening up the building when the outside air is drier than the
inside air. Use fans to increase air movement.
Remove vinyl wall coverings from wet or moist plasterboard to
allow the water to evaporate out through the surface of the board.
Test plasterboard and framing with a moisture meter to ensure
that it is sufficiently dry before repairing any water damage.
Cleaning and Repairing
Surface mould may be removed using a solution of household
laundry bleach (sodium hypochlorite) mixed with water in the
ratio approximately one part bleach to three parts water, or as
per manufacturers recommendations. Exercise care and observe
warning labels and manufacturers instructions when cleaning
with this product.
Start cleaning where mould is most severe. The areas that do
not clean up successfully may have to be replaced or sealed to
prevent bleed through after decoration.
Certain types of damage may occur after the plasterboard has
dried out. This includes rusting metal fasteners and mould growth
(either visible on the surface or concealed on the back face or
framing). Fasteners which show signs of corrosion or rust may
need to be removed and replaced, and filled prior to final
decoration.
Check for adhesive failure in walls and ceilings and if necessary
fully screw fix damaged areas.
After the plasterboard has been cleaned, repair all holes and
cut-outs used for draining, and those areas where fasteners
were replaced. For best results repair with Boral Cornice Adhesive
and Topping Compounds. Seal surface where necessary.
Painted surfaces may need to be inspected by the paint
manufacturer prior to re-painting.
For further queries in regard to water damaged plasterboard
please call Boral TecASSIST on 1800 811 222 or contact your
local Boral Plasterboard representative.

Green Star
The Green Building Council of Australia developed Green Star
to provide the property industry with an objective measurement
for green buildings and to recognise and reward environmental
leadership in the building industry.
The Green Star rating tools each include the following nine
categories: Management; Indoor Environment Quality; Energy;
Transport; Water; Materials; Land Use & Ecology; Emissions;
and Innovation.
Green Star environmental rating tools
Sectors covered at present include office and retail, with
healthcare and education tools existing as pilot programs.
Pilot tools will be produced for mixed use/multi-unit
residential, industrial and public buildings.
Projects are evaluated against eight environmental impact
categories, plus innovation (at right). Within each category,
points are awarded for initiatives that demonstrate that a
project has met the overall objectives of Green Star and
the specific criteria of the relevant rating tool credits.
Points are then weighted and an overall score is calculated,
determining the project's Green Star rating. A design, project
or building cannot publicly claim a Green Star rating unless
the GBCA has certified the rating.
The following Green Star certified ratings are available
for all projects:
* Four Star Green Star Certified Rating; recognises
Best Practice (score 45-59)
* Five Star Green Star Certified Rating; recognises
Australian Excellence (score 60-74)
* Six Star Green Star Certified Rating; recognises
World Leader (score 75-100)
Where do Boral Plasterboard and Compounds fit in?
The Green Star rating tool assessment criteria relevance to Boral
Plasterboard is:
Waste Management (MAN)
Indoor Environment Quality (IEQ)
1. Internal noise levels
2. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC)
3. Formaldehyde minimisation; and
Materials Sections.
What is ecospecifier?
ecospecifier is an eco-materials and technologies knowledge
base. The ecospecifier website provides information on how
to design and deliver buildings, interiors and surrounds using
environmentally preferable products and materials available
in Australia. ecospecifier enables identification of green or
eco-preferable products or materials.
