Metta is the ancient Eastern meditation practice that
cultivates love and kindness to the self and then outwards to
others. This beautiful tradition increases awareness, empathy, generosity, and compassion, while at the same time helps to manage stress and cope with difficult emotions. This and other mindfulness techniques will be used to assist young ladies in navigating through their teen years. Adolescence is a very difficult time where young beings are discovering their values, independence, roles in life, as well as attending to constant change and transformation as they rapidly develop. This group will help these impressionable ladies move through their teen years gently, but decisively. Within the safe and supportive space of the group, we will be delving into difficult teen issues, including bullying, body image, dating, influence of the media/advertisements, and social media in the digital age. Additionally, we will be using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) techniques to assist teens in discovering their values so they may be better equipped with integrity and equanimity. Group objectives: - Ability to connect with the present moment - Understanding of cognitive functions and relation to thoughts - Greater knowledge of personal beliefs and perceptions - Increased empathy and self-acceptance - Committed action towards goals - Emotional regulation - Positive relational skills - Stress reduction Group Activities: - Guided meditation, imagery, and visualizations - Art work and Journaling - Breathe work and yogic movement exercises - Thoughtful discussions
