ROTATIONS OF TWO POINTS

ADV GEOMETRY | PACKER COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE

Set up: In the blank space below, draw a point and label it G.
On a piece of patty paper, draw two points labeled G and G.
Put the patty paper on this paper so that the points labeled G line up.

Task: You are going to try to hunt for the center of rotation that will bring G to G. Even if it is tough to find, I
promise you that it exists! Once you find it, draw the point with a colored pencil so it stands out as important!
(To remind you how to go about this hunt pin the patty paper down with your pencil point wherever you
think the center of rotation is that will bring G to G then rotate the patty paper! If G lands on top of G,
youre golden!)

An interesting conclusion: For any two points, there is a center of rotation that will rotate one point to the
second point.

Follow Up Task: Im going to ask you to use the exact same patty paper to do the exact same exercise. Except I
want you to see if there are any more possible centers of rotations. If you find any, draw those points with the
colored pencil. After trying for a while, if you do not find any more, try to come up with a reason why there
might not be any others.

When you are done, tape the patty paper here.

ROTATIONS OF A LINE SEGMENT
ADV GEOMETRY | PACKER COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE

Set up: In the blank space below, draw a segment that is between 2 and 4 centimeters long.
Anywhere on a piece of patty paper, trace the segment.
Now translate and rotate the patty paper (basically move it around and twirl it) and trace the segment again
somewhere else on the patty paper.

Task: You are going to try to hunt for the center of rotation that will the bring first segment you drew on the
patty paper to the second segment you drew on the patty paper. Even if it is tough to find, I promise you that
it exists! Once you find it, draw the point with a colored pencil so it stands out as important!

An interesting conclusion: For two congruent line segments, there is a center of rotation that will rotate one
line segment to the other.

ROTATIONS OF THREE POINTS
ADV GEOMETRY | PACKER COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE

Set up: In the blank space below, draw a single point, labeled A.
Draw any three non-collinear points on your patty paper. Label them A, B, and C.

Task: Place your patty paper so that point A on the patty paper corresponds with point A on this sheet of
paper. You are going to try to hunt for the center of rotation that will bring B to point A and that will bring C to
point A. In other words, when you twirl the patty paper around the center of rotation, points B and C both at
some time overlap with the location of the original point A.

An interesting conclusion: For any three non-collinear points, there is a center of rotation that will bring any
point to the location of any other point.

CENTER OF ROTATION PRACTICE
ADV GEOMETRY | PACKER COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE

1. (a) What are all possible centers of rotation that will bring A=(2,5) to A=(4,-11)?

(b) Write down one center of rotation that is not (3, -3): ____________

2. Find the exact coordinates of the
center of rotation for these two line
segments.

3. You have the triangle BCD below. It goes through a particular angle of rotation until D is now at D.

You are to use only a ruler, compass, and protractor to help you. You may not use patty paper.

(a) What is the angle of rotation? ___________

(b) Plot as accurately as possible where B and C will be after the rotation.

(c) Write down the procedure you used to plot B accurately (add more steps as needed)

ROTATIONS OF A COMPLEX FIGURE
ADV GEOMETRY | PACKER COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE

Set up: In the blank space below, draw an interesting and complex figure (a flower? an intricate blob? a face?)
Anywhere on a piece of patty paper, trace the figure.
Now translate and rotate the patty paper (basically move it around and twirl it) and trace the figure again
somewhere else on the patty paper.

Task: You are going to try to hunt for the center of rotation that will the bring figure you drew on the patty
paper to the second figure you drew on the patty paper. Once you find it, draw the point with a colored pencil
so it stands out as important!

Explain in words how you found the center of rotation:
