INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES CAMPUS, KUALA LUMPUR PROGRAM IJAZAH SARJANA MUDA PENDIDIKAN TESL INTAKE JANUARY 2013 SEMESTER 4 TSL 3073 TEACHING OF WRITING IN THE PRIMARY ESL CLASSROOM
NAME OF STUDENT : SAIFUL AMIR BIN AB AZIZ INDEX NUMBER : 920712035239 DATE OF SUBMISSION : 13 th OCTOBER 2014 LECTURERS NAME : MDM. RAZIMAH / MDM. HASNAH REFLECTION INTRODUCTION For this semester, we are required to conduct a simple microteaching lesson for the course teaching of writing in the primary classroom. The whole process of developing and carrying out the microteaching activity for the course has indeed been a great experience and a good exposure. I have learned so many things that help me a lot in planning on how to teach writing. Plus, I have learnt to believe that the importance and necessity in planning a lesson beforehand. The demonstration of the activity have helped me a lot in reinforcing my understanding of a particular method to teach writing to student as we were required to develop and conduct a simulated teaching on it. My group consists of 3 person and I have been assigned to conduct the set induction stage and the while writing stage. We have conducted a lesson on writing on the 1 st October 2014. Our lesson on that day was on the topic Fresh Fruits according to the Year 3 Kssr Syllabus. STRENGTH Based on the feedback from the evaluator that observed our teaching, our group was able to perform the teaching of the lesson very well. We have also presented a lesson on writing which has a smooth transition from the beginning till the end. Overall, most of the areas on the lesson were performed clearly. I was able to give out clear instructions and orders for the students to follow. Giving out simple instructions is very important as children could not accept too many of them at one time. With simple and clear instruction, they were able follow and deliver them well and this will lead them to have a better understanding of the lesson. Furthermore, the set induction of our lesson is considered to be relevant. During the set induction stage, I have used real fruits to raise the student interest to get into the mood of learning the lesson. The plan turn out to be working, their reactions towards the lesson appear to be more engaged. They like the idea of having the real thing in front of their own eyes. In that way, they were able to get the gist of the lesson during that stage. Again based on the feedback, we have also conducted a relevant activity for the student to learn how to write. During the while writing stage, I provided the student with envelopes containing the writing activity which the student must do in groups. They were able to follow the writing activity as they manage to recall the input given on the pre-writing stage. It proves that the input given from at the earlier stage is used successfully by the student on the while writing stage. Apart from that, I have also received some good comments on how I have been able to handle the classroom well. I was into the character just like a real teacher. The students were also attracted to the way of how I conduct the lesson. The evaluators gave me some credits for taking the microteaching seriously and presented the lesson just like how a teacher would do in a normal classroom. WEAKNESSES Despite of all the positive feedback, there are some weaknesses that have been identified from the lesson. The lecturers pointed out a minor thing that our group had left out Firstly; the lesson was weak in term of its focus. After reviewing the lesson plan, I have identified that the way that we have presented our lesson was focusing too much on grammar items rather than teaching of writing. We should have been more precise in delivering the lesson so that the student would not get confused of the lesson focus. This is very important as students cannot handle too much input in a single lesson. Furthermore, we need to improve on our time management. Based on the feedback given, each of our parts turned out to be longer than the time provided and we have exceeded the time limit for conducting the lesson. It was very sad that the lesson was cut short and not all students get the chance to participate in the writing part of the lesson. Apart from that, we were not giving much attention to our blackboard management. We have been spotted with having some problems in managing the items on the board. For instance, we were pasting every single thing on the board at one time. The materials that were used in each stage were supposed to be placed in order so that the student and also the teacher would not get mix up. Furthermore there were parts of my teaching that I could have done better. For example, my pronunciation and articulation was not loud and clear enough for the whole class to listen. This shows my weakness that I have difficulty in communicating clearly with the students. Therefore, I should talk more to gain confidence so that everything came out just like the way it should be. OPPORTUNITIES Though I am satisfied with the lesson that our group has presented, I would love to make some changes here and there to improve more on the lesson. I have learned so many important lessons from this microteaching. Firstly, I should have been more talkative throughout the lesson. By doing so, I can maintain my communication with the student in the classroom. Hence, they will be more focused to obey my instruction. Furthermore, I would love to improve on the task assigned to the student. It would be better if our group did not repeat the same writing activity in the post writing stage. Perhaps, our groups should have given individual task to the student so that it would be easier us to identify which students need enrichment and remedial post activities. The evaluators also suggested that it would be better if we could conduct a simple activity at the end of the lesson. Instead of giving a boring summary or recalling of the lesson at the closure stage, we could deliver an activity that will help the students to remember the lesson better. For instance, students can write a short riddle or do a fill in the blank activity based on that they have learnt earlier. CONCLUSION In conclusion, I have gained much new knowledge from the activity conducted. It has been very meaningful and educational for me as a future teacher because this method could become handy when applied for lessons in schools later. The experience of conducting the activity has caused me to realize the reality of a being a teacher whereby a teacher has to look into all consideration and put in great effort before teaching a lesson. I recognized that good teamwork is necessary in order to succeed in the carrying out the plan discussed which is very much reflected to the teaching world.
