The z test
The z test is a statistical test for the mean of a population. It can be used when n 03,
or when the population is normally distributed and is known.
The formula for the z test is
x -
z=
n

Where
X= sample mean
= hypothesizes population mean
= population standard deviation
n= sample size
Example. A researcher reports that the average income of dentist in Metro Manila is
more that P42,000 per month . a sample of 30 dentists has a mean salary of P43,800.
At = 0.05, test the claim that dentist earn more than P42,000 per month. The
standard deviation is P5.400.

Solution.

Step 1. State the hypothesis and identify the claim.

H0 : P42,000 and H1 : > P42,000 (claim).

Step 2. Find the critical value. Since = 0.05 and test is a right tailed test, the critical
value is z = 1.65 .

Step 3. Compute the test value.

x - P 43,800 42,000
z= = 5400 = 1.83
n 30

Step 4. Make the decision. Since the test value 1.83, is more than the critical value 1.65
, and in the critical region, the decision is, reject the null hypothesis. This test is
summarized in the figure below:

0.95

Do not reject region rejection region

1.65 1.83

Step 5. Summarize the result. There is enough evidence to support the claim that
dentist in Metro Manila earn more than P42.000 per month.

The t test

The t test is a statistical test for the mean of a population and is used when the population is
normally or approximately normally distributed, is unknown , and n<30

The formula for the t test is
x -
t=
n

The degree of freedom are d.f. = n -1

The critical values for the t-test are given in table 2. For a one tailed test, find level by
looking at the top row of the table and finding the appropriate column. Find the degree of
freedom by looking down the left hand column .

Example. Find the critical t value for = 0.05 with d.f. = 12 a right-tailed test.

d.f One tail .25 .10 .05 .025 .01

Two tails .50 . 20 . 10 .05 .02

When testing hypotheses by using the t-test, follow the same procedure as for the z test.

Step 1. State the hypotheses and identify the claim.
Step 2. Find the critical value(s) from table 2
Step3. Compute the test value.

Example 1. The labor department claims that the average salary for surveys in Mindanao is
P24,000 per month. A sample of 10 surveyors has a mean of P23,220 and a standard deviation
of P400. Is there enough evidence to reject the agencys claim at = 0.05?

Solution.

Step 1. State the hypotheses and identify the claim.

H
0
: = P24,000 and H
1
: P 24,000

Step 2. Find the critical values from table 2.
The critical values are 2.262 and -2.262 for 0.05 and d.f. = n-1 = 9
Step 3. Compute the test value.

x - 23.220- 24,000
t= = 400 = -6.17
n 10
Step 4. Make a decision to reject the null hypothesis.
Reject the null hypothesis , since -6.17 < -2.262, as shown below.

0.025 0.95 0.025

rejection rejection
region region
-6.17 -2.262 2.262

Step 5. Summarize the result. There is enough evidence to reject the claim that the starting
salary of surveyors in Mindanao is P24,000.
