Singing the song of baalesaant, the performers and chief priest go towards
the eastern side border of the village. They bring along with them the stone
That symbolizes Lord Eswara and place it before the Indian poison nut tree
(stryehnos nux vomica). The served food is also kept there and all go round
the tree. After that the sharadaambe idol of Sringeri is kept on a chair and
the priest performs waving aarati. All the performers remove their
costumes and place it on the Indian poison nut tree. The song and dialogues
of each performer is induced & recorded. Each performer break are coconut
each on the stone and take home pieces of the coconut last part of the ritual.

Kokeri Village in the early morning hours.

after decorating the ettu (bull) Kodavas bring the bull infront of the
Chenanda ain mane and pooraaT is put on the back of the bull. Traditional
prayer is offered and ettu pooraaT moves towards the place called Niliyat
Sartavu in procession

ettu pooraaT procession is on the way to Nilyat Sartavu. In the front a
drummer from meeda caste beating the paDuva (the drum). The Brahmin
priest purifies the path by sprinkling the sacred water. Spirit medium persons
in possession (tiruvaaLa), next bhaNDaara and ettu pooraaT

In the midst of the forest, the place called Niliyat Sartavu. In an elavated
place is seen Ishwara linga. The procession enters the place and goes three
rounds around the Shivalinga. After ettu pooraaT is brought infront of the
linga, traditional prayer is offered by the Kodavas and then pooraaT is
takenout from the back of the bull. The priest offering the puuja performance
to God. All the devotees taking prasaadam and moves towards Bhagavathi
temple (9:04). Previously the kombaaT dance used to be performed in this
very spot of Niliyat Sartavu. However it was shifted to Bhagavathi temple
few years ago due to limit of space available at Niliyat Sartavu.

Palandira P. Devayya says the following to the gathering in Kodava
language.
(Elders and youngsters we have provided the guns. Its use is very limited.
Use this in a proper way. For small birds do not use guns. For that we
have provided the bows and arrows. Using this to hunt kombakshi. Your
aim must be very clear. We have provided the knife. Use this in a
properway. If you use this in an improper way you will be punished. This is
the main theme of the dialogue)

Releasing the ettu (Bull) inside the temple. The owner of the bull gets one
coconut from the temple authority as a token of respect. On that particular
day the bull is free to wander anywhere in the village

place here. The armaments and implements (like the guns and the sickles)
are set against the wall in a row as preparation for the ritual

The members of the Mandettira family have placed their armor on the
Nellakki Nadubaade (main hall) Guns, sickles and spears are the main pieces
of armour

A pair of bullocks have been washed and held in readiness. Sri Kunnappa,
elderly member of the family lays a yoke across the shoulders of the
bullocks and fastens it. He smears the bodies of the bullocks with a mixture
of oil and turmeric. A special assortment of dishes made of rice and
turmeric is given to the bullocks. On the whole this appears to be part of the
agricultural operation.

KAILPOLDU RITUAL

kailpoLdu ritual. As the old and young members of the Mandetira family
gather in the Nellakki Nadubade the priest offers incense, lamp and aarati
to the implements and folds his hands in prayer. Two elderly members of the

The main dishes of the Kodavas by the day of kailpoLdu ritual is
Kadambuttu and Pandikeri. These are placed in front of the implements in a
banana leaf spread on the ground. Liquor is placed along with the food. A
portion of the food and drink is taken to in another banana leaf to Kaimada,
supposed to be the dwelling place of the dead ancestors

Offering food to the spirits of ancestor in the Kaimada. Food is placed on a
leaf. People pay respect to the spirits. The food is later distributed as
prasadam

Paddy cultivation by the Mandetira family

The palmleaf umbrella called Andhola kept under the roof of the Mandettira
ancestral house and the drums. It is the privilege of this family to provide
the Andhola for the procession of the deity during Kakootuparambu Ishwara

A feast with meat and drinks is a common feature of all festival in Kodagu
Common feast curry of Pigs meat and Kadumbu are specially prepared for
the feast on the day of Kailpoldu

After the worship in Nellakki Nadubaade the weapons are hundred over by
the eldest members of family to a younger member who is advised to
hunt wild beasts in the forest and return home safely. The younger members
bows in respect before the eldest member

TENGEBOODI

"tengebooDi" on the yard of Mandettira ancestral house. It is a kind of sport
where participants try to break the coconuts hung in a row from a line
fastened to the twig by shooting with a gun. Even women take part

Srimathi Muttvva Kunchappa, coming from the patrappanda family is ninty
years old and 5 years senior to her husband

Local organization had arranged for games and sports competitions on the
Kakotuparambu grounds in connection with the kailpoLdu festival. The
president and the chief guest inaugurate the competition by means of
shooting in the tengeboDi
