Dear Member of the United States Olympic Committee:
With seven weeks remaining before you vote on selecting a US candidate city for the 2024 Summer Olympics, we wanted to introduce our committee and its goals. No Boston Olympics opposes Bostons Olympic bid, and is actively working to provide the citizens of Massachusetts with accurate information about the immense costs associated with hosting the Games.
As the home of the United States first public school, first public park, and first subway, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has a strong and proud tradition of social investment. Hosting an Olympics is a $10-$20 billion undertaking that threatens the Commonwealths ability to make much-needed investments in healthcare, education, and core transportation infrastructure that have made the Bay State such an exceptional place to live, work, and play.
We are great admirers of our Olympic athletes, and we respect the efforts of the USOC to advance the Olympic spirit. Choosing Boston as the sole US finalist for 2024 will threaten those efforts by relying on a bid that requires building a new Olympic stadium, velodrome, aquatics center, and Olympic Village -- all from scratch.
Over the coming seven weeks, please expect to hear from our organization and its members about (1) the troubling weaknesses and flaws and of the current Boston bid, (2) the strong and growing opposition to a Boston bid from Massachusetts voters, (3) and our planned efforts to give the citizens of the Commonwealth a voice in whether or not to provide public backing to an Olympic games.
We hope that you will carefully consider our position as you deliberate on this important choice.
Sincerely,
Chris Dempsey, Liam Kerr, Kelley Gossett Phillips Co-Chairs, No Boston Olympics
