Goal

Develop an online course that is designed to admit an

unlimited number of students without proportional growth in
cost.

Method
Create industry specific online learning communities with
the following features:
• Information resource area of relevant books, papers,
and articles
• Synchronous simulation environment where teams
periodically compete in scenarios created by
instructors, high level students and guest experts
• Community resource area of discussions, wikis and
blogs
• Mentorship area to work with other students and
instructors

Supporting information

1) online courses could cost the state more money than

traditional classroom education

‘A cost study in 2007 showed that half of the online

sections were more expensive to run than traditional class
meetings’

2) Use competition to motivate

Siddiqui, Khan and Katar present a case of application of

simulation games. They tested a supply chain simulator and
observed a higher sense of competition amongst students.
“the nature of the game itself and the competitive element
involved, act as an incentive for all students to put in
more effort and even weaker students persist with playing
the game”.

Analysis of Satisfaction and Learning Styles

3) Build industry-specific team competency

‘Next will be schooling that stresses the ability to solve

problems, but not just to solve problems but to be able to
do it collaboratively so that you can work in a group where
the group is smarter than the smartest person in it…’ –
James Paul Gee

learning-and-games/

‘A learning community is a group of people who share

common values and beliefs, are actively engaged in learning
together from each other.’
from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Learning_Community

4) Leverage the advantages of simulation for training and

performance assessment

• No actual risk is involved

• Many scenarios can be presented, including uncommon
situations
• errors can be allowed to occur and reach their
conclusion
• Identical scenarios can be presented to different
teams
• Recording of the simulation session can be reserved
for research, performance assessment, or accreditation

Existing resources and advantages for CCE

Professional education negates the traditional requirements
for accredited courses and allows for an industry needs
driven learning environment.

The required technologies and development competency are

already available to CCE
• Synchronous interaction using umConnect and SyncSWF
• Social learning environment using Moodle
• Application development, video and 3d are competencies
of the New Media Group

Outstanding requirements
1) Develop an ‘interaction narrative’ to explain what the
hell we’re talking about
2) Identify an industry need for building team-based
competency
3) Partner with a thought leader in the targeted industry
sympathetic to our approach
4) Build enthusiasm and cooperation within CCE and the
university community
