The Therapeutic Touch
Bother Mandus

Exciting discoveries are

constantly being made about the
miraculous functioning of the
mind.
The power of prayer for example has proved to be a
transcendental experience. Meditation takes one
into communion with the infinite intelligence, love,
wisdom and guidance of our Almighty Creator.
In every area of scientific research man is probing
deeper into the inner and invisible reality and is
discovering the very laws which govern and
motivate the entire universe. Increasingly, in the
future we shall all be involved in this deeper
partnership with the Lord of creation and allow His
infinite power to flow into all our activities. Then
indeed shall we have peace on Earth and unified,
creative processes designed to secure the wellbeing
of the entire world family.
It may well be that aptitude tests for spiritual healing
will be part of the medical school entrance
examinations! If so, they might be modelled after
5
the work of New York University's Doris Krieger.
Dr. Krieger has just completed her fourth effective
repeat of her experiments which demonstrate that
'Laying On of Hands' is able significantly to raise
haemoglobin values in patients' blood. In these
latest trials, she monitored 32 registered nurses
trained in therapeutic touch, who treated 64
patients in various New York hospitals.
Co-operation for this research came from all levels of
patients, attending doctors, nursing directors, and
each institution's Board of Research Review. Since
haemoglobin is one of the most well understood of
all human proteins, Doctor Krieger feels that her
experiments may have shed light on an important
method for confirming reproducibility in para-
psychological research.
The 'Laying on of Hands' has been used in spiritual
healing for thousands of years. It is certainly one of
the ancient sacraments in the Christian Church. It
represents the deep instincts of mankind to come
into close fellowship with the Lord and with each
other, and has produced astonishing results of
healing for all kinds of spiritual, mental and physical
disorders.

6
Our work at the Sanctuary has been involved in
research into these wonderful ways of
consciousness, and throughout that period it has
been an amazing experience. To witness even one
life transformed by prayer, or one healing of a so-
called incurable disease, quickens the mind to
contemplate the infinite potentials inherent in
communion with the Lord of Creation.

Down the years we have published in our free

'Crusader' magazine thousands of testimonies
from people who personally experienced
transformations beyond human skill to achieve.

So we go forward rejoicing and giving thanks and are

especially conscious of your fellowship with us in
the Father's work. There is indeed a world to be
won and new dimensions of experience represent
the highway along which all humanity will,
inevitably, march to the great freedoms of the
future.

A SMILE
Brother Conrad

Just a little smile on your lips

cheers your heart, keeps you
in good humour, preserves
peace in your soul, promotes
your health, beautifies your
face, induces kindly thoughts
and inspires kindly needs.
Smile to yourself . . . until you notice that constant
seriousness, or even severity, has vanished. Smile
to yourself. . . until you have warmed your own
heart with the sunshine of your cheery countenance.
Then . . . go out and radiate your smile. That smile .
. . has good work to do! You are a friendly beacon
now and your smile is your gift of friendship.

The love in your soul will give a special charm to

your smile, which will render it productive of much
good. Smile ... on the lonely faces; smile ... on the
timid faces; smile ... on the sorrowful faces; smile . . .
on the sickly faces; smile . . . on the fresh young
faces; smile . . . on the wrinkled old faces; smile . . . on
the familiar faces. Let all enjoy the beauty and
inspiring cheer of your smiling face.
8
Count — if you will — the number of smiles your
smile has drawn from others in one day. The
number will represent how many times you have
promoted contentment, joy, satisfaction,
encouragement, or confidence, in the hearts of
others. These good dispositions always give birth to
unselfish acts and noble deeds. Your smile . . . can
bring new life and hope and courage into the hearts
of the weary, the over-burdened, the discouraged,
the tempted, the despairing. Your smile . . . can
help to develop vocations. Your smile . . . can
bring a sinner back to God.

Smile too, at God. Smile at God in loving

acceptance of whatever He sends into your life and
you will merit the radiantly smiling face of Christ
gaze on you with special love throughout Eternity.

Loneliness
‘Mac’ of the Sanctuary

Nobody stands at the garden gate

To watch for me when the hour grows late.
There’s not a soul in the world to share
My daily lot, be it fowl or fair.
Nobody hastens to welcome me
Op’ning the door with cry of glee.
There isn’t a sound save the east wind’s moan
Through wintery trees…for I’m quite alone.

Nobody kindles the cheerful glow

Of friendly fire, or wants to know
Whether I’ve triumphed and what I’ve done
‘Twixt the dawn of day and the set of sun.
Slowly I enter and empty room,
Nobody calls through the gathering gloom.
Whatever my mood, be it ill or well,
‘Tis locked in my heart, for there’s none to tell.

But someone loves you unendingly,

Down all the years to eternity.
“Nobody wants me” just can’t be true.
HE cared so much that He died for you!

Working Together
For Good

Brother Andrew

We offer you our friendship and support when times

are difficult, and we revel in your good news. I trust
that when you pray you really do believe in a divine
solution? It is through a complete trust in God that
all things are possible. Many people are of the belief
that certain diseases and illnesses will run their
course over a number of days or weeks, yet we do
not aspire to that line of thinking! If you accept that
premise then that is how long you will take to feel
well again! Divine healing is about miraculous and
spontaneous healings right now! Open those lines of
communication and let us intercede on your behalf.
Try not to become ‘bogged down’ with worry and
fear because you will harm yourself and others with
this negative line of thought. Tune into your naturally
God centred soul, and let the Father take charge
right now. We often suffer in silence and you no
18
longer have to. Share with us and let's work
together in partnership. We pray that all needs are
washed away in a ‘tide of love’ as God enters into
every aspect of your circumstances and refreshes
our minds, bodies and souls! There is no limit to
God’s potential. The Father is all-powerful and
everywhere present. He awaits your invitation today.
He will enter into your life without delay.

Have you asked God for His help lately? The

Perfect Solution is there for the asking. Believe
and receive in abundance. You are the living
testimony to God's love manifesting as YOU. It is
the Father’s good pleasure to be able to give us
everything that we need to sustain us physically,
mentally and spiritually. Jesus Christ tells us that
we can not live by bread alone. It is also the new
bread that is shared through the covenant between
God and His creation. We come home to the great
Father, to share this spiritual feast.

At the ‘last supper,’ Christ shared the ‘bread of life’

and the fruit of the vine. They are the body and the
blood as remembered through the Holy
Communion. The essence of celebrating the
Eucharist is that we are celebrating Christ in His
physical and spiritual form. Christ crucified for us!
19
Arising in glory through His conquest of death; the
celebration of eternal life. Of course we need our
physical bodies to carry us through this part of our
experience. The body is the vehicle of the soul. We
also need the Christ-way to guide us along this
wonderful road of life, and it is easy to travel
together.

Within hours of making intercessions to God, my

prayers and those of my loved ones became my
spiritual and physical triumph over pain and
immobility, just as Jesus had triumphed over death
through His prayers. God’s love for us is indeed
mighty!

Beyond Time
Dr. Timothy O’Higgins

I have recently read a fascinating book called, ‘The

Time Paradox’ which discusses how our time
perspective affects our quality of life. After reading
this book, I started to think about how our
relationship to time, affects not only our
psychological life, but also our spiritual journey.
As you review your own, do you see it as a
continuous journey of growth and development? Is
your experience of life, an ongoing spiritual
challenge and exploration or is it lived in a restricted
survival mode? Are you holding onto your past,
imprisoned by your memories? Are you frightened in
your experience of the present, intimidated,
apprehensive and powerless? Or perhaps you live
in the moment with no consideration for the
significance of your being in the world. Maybe you
21
are so focused on your future goals that you cannot
embrace the present, the gift that life presents to
you right now.

How are you using the talents and gifts given to you
for your life’s journey? Are they buried? Misused?
Are they multiplying? Have you used or neglected
the talents, perceiving your assets as liabilities and
your abilities as disabilities? Jesus articulated this
message in the parable of the talents, which
concludes:

“For to him who has, it shall be given, and it

shall increase to him, but he who has not, even
that which he has shall be taken away from
him.” – Matt. XXV, 29

Are you the kind of person who spends long periods

of time dwelling on the past? Are you steeped in
nostalgia, longing for the glory of things past or the
simplicity of your former life? Do you pine for the
status of previous employment or are you still
harbouring resentments experienced in prior
relationships? Do you still identify with your
achievements of yesteryear or bemoan the miseries
of your past? Do you continue to hold grudges
concerning perceived mistreatment of childhood
22
years or long for the comforts of your childhood
home? Do you tend to ruminate about injustices you
endured compared with….compared with
whomsoever you choose to compare yourself? You
are incomparable. Your journey is unique and
designed for your greatest spiritual growth. Do not
devalue yourself or anyone else, by weighing your
individuality against another individual. Your
journey, your mission, your life is meticulously and
specifically designed for your special spiritual
explorations, challenges and successes.

I was talking to a young man recently, who shared a

tragic story. He was driving a car in which his two
best friends died. Unable to resolve his guilt and
shame related to the accident, he continued to judge
himself years afterward, reliving the trauma daily
and experiencing sleep difficulties nightly. When it
was suggested that he try to forgive himself for the
accident, he said that it would be impossible for him
to do this. However, when encouraged to let the
Holy Spirit of forgiveness flow through him, he
consented and a Divine Healing occurred. He can
now live in the present and welcome the future life
he had been so fearful of experiencing. I had an
encounter with another man who had been involved
in a motorcycle accident ten years prior to our
23
meeting. He had lost a leg during the accident and
was in excruciating pain when we met. Recounting
the circumstances of the accident in prayerful
conversation together, he unlocked the memory of
the horrific death of his fiancée, a passenger on the
motorcycle… she had been decapitated. By allowing
forgiveness and emotional release, through Divine
Healing he was freed from the prison of this tragic
event from his past. His physical and mental pains
were healed. He was able to start life again, living in
the present.

Our mindset establishes the system through which

we perceive our reality. Through how we recollect
our past, we frame our experience of the present
and establish the perceptual system through which
we experience our future. A negative mindset
creates a negative perspective on reality. A positive
mindset reveals a positive reality. What is the
context with which you are re-viewing your past and
projecting your future?

Those who maintain a negative perspective about

their past, experience their present with sadness
and depression and approach their future with
apprehension and foreboding. They do not respond
24
well to stress, weighed down as they are by their
past memories. Through a forgiving rather than a
withholding attitude, we can enter into co-operation
with the Spirit within and let go of the negativity,
which may be limiting us from the experience of ‘joi
de vivre,’ the joy of life. Those who adopt a positive
perspective relative to their past tend to be happier
and suffer less from depression and anxiety. They
can manage stress better and they experience
greater social support. By choosing an attitude of
gratitude and by releasing themselves from the
burdens of resentment, they are lighted in
themselves and a joy to be around. I know, as my
wife Merrie is such a person.

God’s Mercy
Store

Brother Roy

Recently I read the little booklet ‘How God Called

Me’ by Brother Mandus (available from our book
store priced £1+ p. & p.) In the booklet he states
that by devoting his life’s work to prayer and helping
others his needs were always met by the Lord. This
reminded me of a story I read sometime ago: I
would like to share it with you now.

This story takes place in Texas where Brother

Mandus once visited and was appointed Mayor of
the beautiful city of La Villita which is located on the
banks of the San Antonio River, in the County Of
Bexar.

In the town of Waller in Texas "God's Mercy

Store," a unique general store, was opened in
1918. Goods were marked at cost, and customers
paid cost plus whatever profit percentage they felt
26
was appropriate. Owner Mr A. D. Purvis an ex-
farmer claimed that the store was established "by
the spirit of Christ which is love, mercy, and self
denial." The store always showed a tidy profit and
was still operating in the 1930s.

To trace the beginnings of this unique enterprise

one must go back to the time when Purvis was a
poor Texas farmer who was shunned by his God-
fearing neighbours as a heathen, though never an
actual atheist. At that time Mr. Purvis never attended
church nor professed to believe in God, tiny doubts
about his Creator had started to creep into his mind
because many religious people he knew, after
attending revival meetings would announce that
they had been ‘born again,’ and then continue to live
the same old way as they had always done. Yet
Purvis, desperately eager to believe, strove with all
his might against the doubts he had. Because of his
extreme poverty and the necessity of working hard
to make a bare living, he had very little leisure time
yet devoted every moment he could spare to
reading the Bible and tried to grasp its meaning. It
was a painfully hard task for, having had little
schooling, he was all but illiterate. One Sunday
evening he came across the following quotation
from St Mathew:
27
“And every one that hath forsaken houses, or
brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife,
or children, or lands for my name’s sake, shall
receive a hundredfold and shall inherit
everlasting life.”

He read it over and over again, and all next day

whilst working in his tiny cotton field he kept thinking
about it. “If the Bible is true,” he reasoned, “I should
live according to its teachings because there is a
hereafter. If the Bible is not true, then there is no
hereafter and only my life here on earth matters.
Would I gain or lose by accepting the Bible?” Finally,
Purvis was determined to spend the rest of his life
following the dictates of his well-thumbed Bible. But
this proved less simple than it appeared at first.
Where did one begin serving the Lord and how?

When farmer Purvis told his neighbours that he

wanted to serve the Lord and asked them for
advice, they smiled incredulously. Disappointed in
their reaction he went home sad. Then one day a
miracle happened; he had a vision in which he was
ordered to sell his tiny farm and open a store in
which goods would be sold without profit. The next
day Purvis started searching for a buyer of his farm
and equipment and succeeded in disposing of them.
28
With the money from the sale he built and stocked a
small general store in the little town of Waller. The
legend he placed above the door read:

“Jesus Christ the Same, Yesterday and Today

and Forever.” - Hebrews Xlll, 8.

Inside was a sign that announced: “All goods in this

store are sold at cost, nothing is added for profit.
The store is kept by free-will offerings. Any thing you
may add to your purchase will be received with
many thanks.” At first the people of Waller and the
surrounding countryside came to the new store only
out of curiosity. The idea of associating religion with
business made them sceptical. But the great faith of
the man who kept the store as his way of serving
the Lord, and the fact that the merchandise there
actually was being sold at cost soon won them over.
There were few who did not leave a free-will offering
before departing. After a year or so, trade became
so brisk that Mr. Purvis had to employ extra help, as
time passed more room was needed until the store
covered a floor area of 7,500 sq ft; also a
hairdressing saloon and petrol station were later
added.

29
Many years later Brother Mandus now having lost
everything was kneeling before the Altar in a little
church deep in prayer, when a deep insistent inner
voice said: “Now, my son, your day has come. I
want you to open a Sanctuary of Divine Healing
by Prayer. Now you possess nothing of the
world, and you must have perfect trust in Me,
asking no man for material help. But giving your
whole life in a service of unconditional love,
completely dependent upon Me for everything.”

As with farmer Purvis and his store; from Brother

Mandus’ tiny seed of love and faith has grown a
great Ministry. In all of this only the Lord has done
the work. We have but followed where He directed,
for we of ourselves are nothing.

57 Cents
Dr. Russell H. Conwell

A little girl stood near a small church from which she

had been turned away because it was 'too crowded.'
'I can't go to Sunday School,' she sobbed to the
pastor as he walked by. Seeing her shabby,
unkempt appearance, the pastor guessed the
reason and, taking her by the hand, took her inside
and found a place for her in the Sunday school
class. The child was so happy that they found room
for her, and she went to bed that night thinking of
the children who have no place to worship Jesus.

Some two years later, this child lay dead in one of

the poor tenement buildings; her parents called for
the kind-hearted pastor who had befriended their
daughter to handle the final arrangements. As her
31
poor little body was being moved, a worn and
crumpled red purse was found which seemed to
have been rummaged from some trash dump. Inside
was found 57 cents and a note, scribbled in childish
handwriting, which read:

'This is to help build the little church bigger so

more children can go to Sunday School.'

For two years she had saved for this offering of love.
When the pastor tearfully read that note, he knew
instantly what he would do. Carrying this note and
the cracked, red pocketbook to the pulpit, he told the
story of her unselfish love and devotion. He
challenged his deacons to get busy and raise
enough money for the larger building.

A newspaper learned of the story and published it. It

was read by a wealthy realtor who offered them a
parcel of land worth many thousands. When told
that the church could not pay so much, he offered to
sell it to the little church for 57 cents. Church
members made large donations. Cheques came
from far and wide. Within five years the little girl's
gift had increased to $250,000 -- a huge sum for
that time (near the turn of the century). Her unselfish
love had paid large dividends.
32
When you are in the city of Philadelphia, look up
Temple Baptist Church, with a seating capacity of
3,300. And be sure to visit Temple University, where
thousands of students are educated. Have a look,
too, at the Good Samaritan Hospital and at a
Sunday School building which houses hundreds of
beautiful children, built so that no child in the area
will ever need to be left outside during Sunday
School time. In one of the rooms of this building may
be seen the picture of the sweet face of the little girl
whose 57 cents, so sacrificially saved, made such
remarkable history. Alongside of it is a portrait of her
kind pastor, Dr. Russell H. Conwell, author of the
book:

'Acres of Diamonds.'
