Comments
Working together with employees, define the duties, tasks and responsibilities of
each position in your company. When everyone is clear about what they are
supposed to be doing, they will be better able to accomplish those tasks without
being distracted by other jobs that aren't their concern. Managers will also know
exactly whom to speak to if there are things left undone. Be sure each employee
understands not only his role but how his role connects to all the other roles in
the company. Knowing what he needs to do, and knowing that other employees
are dependent on his doing it, helps an employee to focus on the job at hand.
Develop systems of communication that allow employees to receive feedback
about the quality and efficiency of their work. Without this knowledge, it's difficult
for an employee to improve her efficiency because she doesn't have the
information to show her how well she is doing. Forms of feedback will differ
widely depending on the nature of the workplace. For example, a manufacturing
job is much easier to quantify than a human services job. Allow employees to have
input into the development of a feedback system and you will receive much more
cooperation.
