Safety recommendations
The operating instructions should always be followed.
Since a magnetic field is generated by the induction heater,
people wearing a pacemaker should not work with or be in the
immediate vicinity of the apparatus. Other sensitive electronic
equipment such as wrist watches might also be affected.
Make sure the supply voltage is correct.
Sometimes there might be a potential difference between big
components and the core/housing. This might result in
mini-arching between the component and the core/housing.
This is not dangerous for human beings or the workpiece.
However, the equipment should not be used in areas where there
is a risk for explosion.
Do not expose electronic components to high humidity.
Never start the heater without a yoke in position.
Never modify the heater.
All repair work should be taken care of by a SKF repair shop.
4 TIH 400
1. Introduction
The SKF induction heater TIH 400 is intended for heating large size
rolling bearings. Other metal components forming a closed circuit such
as gear wheels, housings, bushings, shrink rings and pulleys can also
be heated.
The TIH 400 has a maximum capacity of 40 kVA and can be used for
bearings up to 1500 kg but depends on type of component, its geometry
and the required temperature. Limits for solid components like gear
wheels is restricted to somewhere around 700 kg.
At the end of the heating cycle the workpiece is automatically
demagnetized.
The apparatus can also be used as a demagnetizer only.
1.1 Principle of operation
An induction heater can be compared with a transformer using the
principle of a primary coil with a large number of windings, and a
secondary coil with a few windings, on a mutual iron core. The
input/output voltage ratio is equal to the ratio of windings, while the
energy remains the same. Consequently, the secondary coil will provide
a low voltage at a high amperage.
In the case of the SKF induction heater, the bearing is a short circuited,
single-turn, secundary coil through which a low A.C. voltage flows at
high amperage, thus generating a lot of heat. The heater itself as well as
the yoke remain at ambient temperature.
TIH 400 5
2. Description
The heating cycle is electronically controlled either in a TIME MODE,
where the heating time is selected, or in a TEMP MODE where the
desired temperature is selected. The temperature can be measured
either in
o
C or
o
F. The heater can further be run on 50% capacity when
small yokes are used or when there is a risk for too quick heating of
sensitive workpieces (e.g. bearings with C1 or C2 clearance).
2.1 Components
The induction heater consists of a U-shaped iron core with a large
induction coil on one of its legs. The control electronics sits in a separate
control box on top of the heater.
The temperature is controlled by means of a magnetic probe.

3. Operating instruction
3.1 Instructions before use
a) Compare line voltage with indication given on the cable.
As standard the heaters are supplied connected for either 2 x 400 V
or 2 x 460 V.
The plug should be connected as follows:
- yellow/green wire --> ground
- brown --> phase 1
- blue --> phase 2
Only two of the three phases are used.
For the TIH 400 a 150 A fuse of the slow blow type should be used.
b) The heater must be placed in horizontal position and on a stable
support.
c) If the temperature mode is to be used, connect the temperature probe
with the heater.
d) Switch on the main switch by pulling up the handle on the side of the
heater. Press the ON/OFF key on the keyboard and the signal lamp
will light up, indicating that the heater is ready for operation.
e) Always use the biggest possible yoke to obtain shortest heating time.
Never operate the heater without yoke.
f) Make sure that the protection film is removed from the yoke and place
it with the laminated face downwards.
g) The probe should be attached to the inner ring of the bearing, or as
close to the yoke as possible.
h) Select the heating temperature or time and start the heater according
to the instructions for use of the keyboard (paragraph 3.2).
TIH 400 7
3.2 Use of the keyboard
3.2.1 Function of keys
The function of the keys on the keyboard are described below.
Key Function
To switch ON and OFF the heater for shorter periods (use
mains circuit breaker to switch off for longer periods).
To start and stop heating with automatic demagnetisation.
TIME MODE - the heating cycle will be time monitored. When
pressed during heating the pre-selected time will be displayed.
TEMP MODE - the heating cycle will be monitored by the

TIH 400 11
3.3 Thermometer mode
By pressing and simultaneously when the unit is not running,
the actual temperature recorded by the probe will be displayed.
Reset this function by pressing any other key.
3.4 Change of temperature unit.
To change from
o
C to
o
F, or vice versa, the buttons and should
be pressed simultaneously.
The last setting will be remembered.
3.5 Demagnetisation
The workpiece is automatically demagnetised at the end of the heating
cycle.
This function is eliminated when the heater is switched off by the
key, the main switch or by pulling the plug.
When using the heater for demagnetisation only, just run the heater on
shortest possible heating time.
12 TIH 400
3.6 50% capacity
The power should be reduced to 50% when using smaller yokes than
standard (available on request) or when extra care has to be paid to
avoid excessive heating.
Bearings with brass cages should also be heated on 50% capacity.
3.7 Safety features
The induction heater is equipped with the following safety features:
Automatic overheating protection.
Electronics protected by fuses.
In the TEMP MODE the heater will be switched off if the temperature
probe does not register a temperature increase of
1 degree every 60 seconds.
TIH 400 13
