NOVEMBER 2014

From the Pastor:

Rev. Daryl W. Allen
Greetings Brothers and Sisters!
One Sunday earlier this month when I got home from church, Davis greeted
me with a question; Baba, did you miss me at church? I thought what a sweet
question and placed my hands on his cheeks, gave him a kiss, and told him I
missed him very much at church. His response was even better, Thank you
Baba, I missed you too. What a wonderful way to be greeted by another person!
I have thought about that question over the last several days and it occurs to
me Davis may not be the only one asking that question of each and every one
of us. I wonder at times if God asks the same question of creation. How many
people that do not know God, talk to God, or spend time with God have that
question asked of them by God? I also wonder how many of us could help
those same people answer that question asked of them by God.
People of strong faith, people with little faith, and all of us in between will
have that question asked of us at some point. I do not know of any person that
has not had their faith wane, even if just for a moment, at some point in their
life. For some, they regain their faith quickly. But for others that little wane
may just be the beginning of a long slide. That is where we come in. We are
called to be those agents of hope, those friends of light, those vessels by which
the power of the Holy Spirit can be made known.
It is our pleasure and privilege to be Gods representatives in this world to
help the rest of creation come to know God or come back to God. I have
shared in this space before, that I do not feel walking up to a stranger and asking if they know Jesus is always the best way to be that representative. I think
witnessing within our current relationships can bear much more fruit for the
Kingdom, bearing out the importance of having relationships with all people,
inside and outside the church.
I want to encourage all of you, to be open to those opportunities of faith and
encouragement in your daily life. When you see that opportunity, walk gently
but go boldly. Go knowing your God goes with you and help another hear the
question asked of them by God, Do you miss me?. That may be all the encouragement they need to answer yes, so they may hear those glorious words
from God, I missed you too!
A reunion is a wonderful thing, but a reunion with God is a blessed thing. To
help usher in those blessed moments in this life is a treasure you will never
forget. It is a time when that veil between heaven and earth is thinned and we
truly are in the presence of the One that loved us first.
Have a GREAT November!

I want to say thank you! October was Pastor Appreciation month and I want to say thank you
for all of the ways you expressed your appreciation. From the cards, to the incredible gift presented
to me in worship, to the time you took to have a conversation and share your feelings with me face
to face. I greatly appreciate all of the ways you affirmed me and the support you shared with me!

I am honored to be here and be your pastor. To see the ways you allow the Holy Spirit to move
through this congregation, for your willingness to try new things and see how they unfold, and see
you support this community in so many varied ways, it is truly awe inspiring.
This is a vibrant church and that is because of you. So thank you not only for the gifts and kind
words, but for being you. I am grateful for you, amazed by you, and so humbled to live life with
you.
I am excited to see what God will do through us in the future and thank you for allowing me to be
a part of this family.
God bless you all!

I would like to thank my Druid Hills Family for

their prayers, visits, cards and well wishes I
received during my recovery these past many
months. I know I would not be doing so well
without the wonderful support. Looking forward to joining you all in church again.
Love To All! Mary Lou Welsh

My sincere heart felt thanks to all the wonderful people who took the time from their
busy lives to send me such warm wishes. Each
card I read, helped me deal with the lonely
and painful hours I have spent.
God Bless You All! Edith Caroleo

Great News!!
We have exciting news! In 2007 we were given a significant monetary gift to enhance worship for all the people of Druid Hills United Methodist. Well the time has come for us to use
this gift and you will see its fruits beginning in worship on Sunday, November 9th.
This is when we will debut our new projection system. We will have two 65 television
screens installed on each side of the Sanctuary. These screens will be used in various ways
throughout the service to enhance what is already taking place. We are not making wholesale
changes to the service, just looking for other ways to help us connect with God. This will give
us the opportunity to show images during worship and display lyrics to songs and the words
of Holy Scripture. We will be able to expand the music we use and not be limited to the
Hymnal or Blue Folder.
A camera will be installed in the back of the church to record the entire service. This will be
of great benefit to homebound ministry and to those that may not be in worship on a particular Sunday. We will now have audio and video of the entire service! This will deepen the bond
for people not physically with us and allow them to feel more connected to what is going on
during our worship time together.
All of the leadership of this congregation are excited about this and we hope you are as well.
We are not removing the hymnals or Bibles and will continue publishing the page numbers in
the bulletin each week. These screens will simply give you the option of larger print and the
opportunity to look up and sing rather than down into the book. They will give us the chance
to reach new people, incorporate newer songs and save printing costs. The benefits of this
technology are limitless and will do so many things for this congregation.
We have many new faces coming to see us and we want to make sure we are doing all we
can to help them feel comfortable, assist them in feeling connected, and usher them into
Gods presence.
This gift was given many years ago for this express purpose of projection and sound in the
Sanctuary and we cannot use this monetary gift for any other purpose . It is such a blessing
for us to have this opportunity and we hope you will benefit greatly in your worship experience because of it.

HERITAGE SUNDAY
On November 9th we will celebrate the 55th Anniversary of Druid Hills United Methodist Church!
The worship committee is working to create a slide/video presentation of our history as well as a
few displays with some treasures of our past. The pinnacle of this celebration will be our guest
preacher. We are honored to announce that Rev. June Edwards will be with us that day.
Rev. Edwards served Druid Hills from 2003-2007 and enjoyed a wonderful time of ministry here. We
experienced great growth and started several new outreach ministries and events during her time
here that are still going today. I want to encourage you all to come out, invite a friend and be a part
of this wonderful celebration. It will surely be a great time to reminisce about the greatness of our
past and look forward to the enormity of our future! Hope to see you there!

ADVENT CHALLENGE : WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Last year's challenge was so incredibly successful and so many lives were touched by this act of generosity,
the leadership of the church wanted to do it again this year. Once again our goal between now and Christmas Eve is to raise $5,000 to be split between a local and global charity. Of our goal, $2,900 will go to our
global charity, Stop Hunger Now, as we strive to host another meal packaging event to help those children
around the world that are suffering from malnourishment. The other $2,100 will go to our local mission, a
Church Has Left the Building event, scheduled for early 2015.
*Our Goal $ 5,000 Raised To Date $ 2,510.00*
Please prayerfully consider how you might give, above and beyond your normal giving, to support
this challenge so we may reach out and share the love of Christ with other people.

ANNUAL CHURCH THANKSGIVING DINNER

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21st at 6:00PM
Our Thanksgiving dinner will be held Nov. 21st at 6 PM in Fellowship Hall. Dinner is open to all
members, friends and families. It is our tradition to provide the turkeys, stuffing, gravy & beverages. Volunteers have been contacted to roast a turkey, make stuffing & gravy. Pies are being provided by the church this year. All others attending are asked to bring a side dish that will serve 1012 persons. You can sign up at the connection station along with along the number attending in
your party. Reservations are required in order to determine how many turkeys to purchase.
We are going to continue last years idea of showing a slide show during dinner. Pastor Daryl
would like to create a slide show, to play on the projector, that is full of pictures from the lives of
each of you, showing something you are thankful for from this past year. It can be a picture of a
new addition to the family, a picture from an incredible trip, or any other reminder of how you
have experienced the feelings of thanksgiving this year. If you would email those to him, or lend it
to him to scan, along with a brief caption about the picture, he can put those together to share
with everyone in attendance. If you have any questions, please call the office at 629-5688 or email
him at daryl.allen@flumc.org.
Please make sure Pastor Daryl has your
photos by November 14th.

CHILDRENS HOME NEWS

Brothers and Sisters,
As your Childrens Home Local Church Representatives, we thank God constantly for your support
through the quarter buckets and the 5th Sunday Offerings that help fund the Homes many programs. Wed like to thank the Druid Hills UMW unit for letting Anne speak about the Home at their
meeting on September 16th. Your hospitality is much appreciated.
Fall is an exciting time of year at the Childrens Home. At the main campus in Enterprise, the onsite Aldersgate Academy expanded classroom space to serve more residents (6-10th grades), including those with behavioral needs and other challenging circumstances. In addition, the Home
applied to start a public charter school in 2015-2016, to help displaced youth (not living with biological parents) in the surrounding community.
The Madison Youth Ranch is officially open near the town of Pinetta (west of Live Oak). Currently
12 kids, plus house parents, are making use of the facilities, with an eventual goal of serving over
100 children from ages 6-17. Read about the ranchs recent dedication at http://
floridaconferenceconnection.info/news/detail/5008. For more info, email madison.ranch@fumch.org.
For more about the Childrens Home, donating or volunteering, visit www.allchildrenfirst.org, and
follow them on Facebook (fumch) and Twitter (@fumch1908).
Thanks for your time, and keep the children and staff of the Childrens Home in your prayers.

LIFE LINE SCREENING EVENT HERE AT DUUMC

JANUARY 19, 2014 STARTING AT 9:00 AM
Below is a summary of what screenings will be offered
Typically, the following screenings will be offered in a community-based setting as they are non-invasive and easy
to do in a non-hospital setting. Screenings test for:
1. Carotid Artery Blockage, which can constrict or stop blood flow to the brain and lead to stroke. The stroke
screening visualizes fatty plaque buildup and measures the velocity of blood flow to the brain.
2. Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), or hardening of the arteries. The Ankle Brachial Index screening checks for
PAD, a condition in which the arteries that carry blood to the arms or legs become narrowed or clogged, slowing or stopping the flow of blood. PAD is closely linked to coronary artery disease. Identifying individuals with
PAD can help prevent heart attack and stroke.
3. High Blood pressure (hypertension) which is when the pressure in your arteries is too high and puts stress on
them and on your heart.
4. Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms, which can lead to a ruptured abdominal aorta that generally causes death.
This screening scans for enlargements or weak areas in the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart
to the rest of the body.
5. Osteoporosis, a bone weakening disease that afflicts both women and men and often leads to broken bones
and disability. The screening is performed with a quantitative ultrasound bone densitometer, using the heel as a
measurement site. This test compares the participants bone density to World Health Organization guidelines.
6. Blood testing: Life Line Screening offers blood testing to screen Americans for risk factors associated with
coronary heart disease, stroke and diabetes. The laboratory-accurate lipid panel, which can include total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides; blood glucose; and high sensitivity C-reactive protein, is available in most
states.
7. Atrial Fibrillation, which is an abnormal heart beat (arrhythmia) that affects the atria - the upper chambers of
the heart - and is the most common form of sustained arrhythmia. 2.5 million Americans have been diagnosed
with atrial fibrillation, and the condition is more common in adults over the age of 60.
8. Biometrics such as height, weight, waist circumference and body-mass index.

More information about this event will be posted in our bulletins and newsletters. If you have any questions now or need more information you may contact our Church Nurse, Joyce Baugher.
