Winter Storage
In all my years of being a shop owner, it still amazes me
the amount of people that do not know what to do prior to
a winter storage and how their laziness leads to potential
unnecessary cost in the spring. There is never a better time
to pull out the phrase you can pay me now or pay me later
and usually the latter will cost you more in dollars and in
down time.
Depending on how long youll be storing your bike, youll
want to make sure your bike emerges from deep storage as
undamaged from rust, corrosion, and inactivity as possible
so here are a few storage tips to follow:
1. CHANGE YOUR OIL NOW and dont wait till spring!!!
Let me put it to you like thisyou would not put a baby
to bed with a dirty diaper and just wait till the morning to
change itwould you?? This is my one huge pet peeve of
bike owners, it is always a good idea to get a FULL service
prior to storage meaning engine, transmission and primary
oil changed plus lubricating the throttle and clutch cables
(obviously ignore the cable lube if you have fly-by-wire
throttle or hydraulic clutch). If your shop is not lubricating
your cablesfind another shop! As the saying goes its not
going to lubricate itself and that holds true for the cables
also. I can not tell you how many cables I have replaced
that were only a few years old that would have lasted 10
times longer if the owner or their service center used about
50 cents worth of spray and did their job!

T I P S
in October but they ended up buying a $130 battery from
me in the spring. I have had a ton of customers that have
gotten 6 to 8 years out of a battery that would have averaged about 3 to 5 years just because they used a battery
tender each winter.
4. Give your bike a good bath and wax before storage. If
you have a bagger that means taking the bags and tour
pack off and cleaning all those areas that normally get overlooked on those quick spritz summer wipe downs. Make
sure you clean your rims of all the brake dust and grime that
have been overlooked or missed during the year and also
remove all the dried bug and tar spots on your clear coat
paint. I always recommend after a good fall cleaning that
customers use a high end wax and lay down a awesome
shine to their paint and chrome to protect it from potential
condensation issues that may arise during winter storage.
5. A breathable dust cover is another option to protect that
clean bike for storage and are available from most dealerships for about $50. Make sure it is a breathable cover for
indoor storage and not a rain cover, rain covers keep rain
off your bike in the summer but will keep condensation
inside your cover if you have a damp humid winter day.

6. I have stressed this before and I will stress it again,

check your tire pressure and store your bike with the proper
pressure in the tires. Tires will lose a bit of pressure in the
colder months due to contraction of the air molecules so a
35# tire pressure in the summer may be as low as 30# on a
2. Prior to storage put a gas treatment in your tank! With the 32 degree day in the winter. Low tire pressure leads to the
addition of ethanol in most of our fuels, it is a MUST to use
potential of flat spotting in the tires during long storage pea gas treatment that is specific to preventing know probriods so proper pressure will diminish that potential of that

Dogs of War: New A&E Series Captures Intense Journey of

PTSD Military Veterans As Theyre Matched With Shelter Dogs
Stephanie, a 25 year-old wife, mom and veteran haunted
by memories of her year as a prison guard in Iraq, is paired
with service dog Atticus in A&Es Dogs of War, a new docuseries following war veterans suffering from post-traumatic
stress disorder, as they are paired with shelter dogs trained
to help them adjust to life after combat.
The A&E network will soon debut Dogs of War, a new
docu-series about war veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the service dogs that
help them adjust back into life after combat.
The show, which premieres on Veterans Day next month,
is based on married couple Jim and Lindsey Stanek and
their nonprofit organization Paws and Stripes. The organization provides service dogs to wounded military veterans,
and each episode will chronicle the journey of one or two
PTSD veterans as they are paired with mans best friend.
This series is full of raw, real and intensely emotional
moments that dont often get a spotlight in mainstream media, David McKillop, General Manager and Executive Vice
President of A&E said in a press release.
The pets provided to the veterans are all adopted shelter
dogs that are trained in rehabilitation. The series captures
the many ways in which the dogs assist military vets in their
struggles with PTSD.
Jim, a former veteran who served three tours in Iraq,

decided to launch Paws and Stripes after experiencing his own struggles with PTSD upon
returning home from combat. At one point, he
found himself on the brink of homelessness and
on a long waiting list to be paired with a service
dog, which only added to his ordeal.
In a bid to make the recovery process easier
for other war vets, Jims organization adopts
unwanted dogs from kill shelters and trains them
before pairing them with veterans at little to no
cost.
Each veterans story of survival is humbling
and we are proud to create a series that captures the light at the end of the tunnel for these
heroes, McKillop said.
Dogs of War is produced by Custom Productions, Inc. and Redtail Media, LLC for A&E
Network.
The show premieres on A&E on Nov. 11, 2014.

introduced

new models which were squarely aimed at industry

dominating models from Harley-Davidson. The
69 cubic inch V-twin Scout and the Roadmaster
supercruiser revive classic models from the Indian
archives.
From 1947 to 1953, the Roadmaster was
a dominant model in the Indian lineup and was
recognized as one of the most comfortable and
durable touring bikes of the period. The new 2015
Roadmaster seeks to reclaim that heritage with a
number of upgrades and premium amenities aimed
at providing comfort, convenience, and certainly
luxury for the touring rider.

The 2015 Indian Roadmaster is powered by

the same Thunder Stroke 111 engine that also
powers the Chief Lineup a 9-degree, 1811cc aircooled V-Twin. It also features the same six speed
transmission found in the other Indian big V-twins.
The new Roadmaster offers much more for riding
in virtually any weather:
Nearly 38 gallons of weatherproof storage
Standard hard-sided saddlebags and a roomy
quick release, carpet-lined rear trunk both
featuring remote locking for security and
convenience
Enhanced driver leg room and adjustable

CITY IN WASHINGTON SETTLES PUBLIC RECORDS LAWSUIT
WITH BIKERS The city of Kennewick, Washington has settled with
a Tacoma motorcyclist and a group of motorcycle clubs who accused
the city of violating the state Public Records Act. The city will pay
$45,000 as part of the settlement of two lawsuits and will release some
of the disputed records, City Attorney Lisa Beaton recently told the city
council. The city has not admitted any wrongdoing in the handling of
the records requests filed by Edward Goehring and the Washington
Confederation of Clubs (COC). Both separately sued Kennewick after
they claim they were improperly denied documents, including photos
and videos, that Kennewick police took when they cited motorcyclists in
separate incidents. Goehring was one of eight motorcyclists stopped by
Kennewick police and Benton County sheriffs deputies in August 2012
and cited for traffic violations. And in April 2013, authorities stopped
some motorcyclists from the Washington Confederation of Clubs
and cited them for traffic infractions during a gathering in Kennewick.
In both cases, Kennewick police pursued information about outlaw
motorcycle gangs, according to Beaton. The city, Goehring and the motorcycle club still disagree about some records. However, they agreed
to have a third-party arbitrator review those records to decide which
should be withheld or redacted and then released, Beaton told the
Tri-City Herald. The $45,000 will come from the citys risk management
fund. Insurance does not cover public record lawsuits, she said. About
$12,400 will go to the WA COC, and Goehring will receive the remainder. As part of the agreement, Goehring and the motorcycle clubs will
dismiss their lawsuits with prejudice, which means they cant be filed
again, according to city documents. Goehring and the Washington Confederation of Clubs are represented by the same attorney group, Aid to
Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) Attorneys Marty Fox and Mike Meyers.

CHIEF OF POLICE CANCELS OCEAN CITY BIKE WEEKNO

COLORS POLICY A.I.M. Attorney addresses Ocean Citys No Colors
Policy...GOOD NEWS (Sept 12, 2014): The Maryland Confederation Of
Clubs Attorney Mitchell Greenberg approached the Ocean City Police
on Thursday, Sept. 11 to address the NO COLORS policy stated
on the Chief of Police Bike Week Rules and Regulations page on the
OCPD website. The matter was brought to a quick and friendly close
including a personal call to Mitch from Chief of Police Ross Buzzuro
THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE 16

who assured the Maryland Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) Attorney

that all Clubs and Colors are welcome in Ocean City. Mitch in turn assured Chief Buzzuro that the leaders of each Club share his hope for a
Safe and Incident-Free bike week. The OCPD also assured Mitch that
the No Colors language will be removed as soon as possible and that
Colors are welcome in Ocean City public areas.
NHTSA WAIVES BUY-AMERICAN REQUIREMENT FOR MICHIGAN RIDER TRAINING Because the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration determined that American makers dont offer a small
and light enough motorcycle for a Michigan Rider Training Program,
the agency has approved their request to waive federal Buy-American
rules to allow the state to purchase foreign-made motorcycles for their
courses. The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning will now use
government grant money to buy a fleet of 20 Suzuki training motorcycles, though so-called Buy America rules say NHTSA cannot award
any funds unless steel, iron, and manufactured products used in such
project are produced in the United States. However, NHTSA is allowed
to waive the rules if they are inconsistent with the public interest or
such materials and products are not produced in the United States in
reasonably available quantities or the inclusion of domestic material will increase the cost of the overall project contract by more than
25 percent. Finding that a cost waiver is appropriate for the twenty
training motorcycles because domestically produced motorcycles would
increase the cost by more than 25 percent, NHTSA awarded Michigan
grant funds to improve rider training.
VIRGINIA COPS SPIED ON MOTORISTS AT POLITICAL RALLIES
Documents released by the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia
confirm that the Virginia State Police used cameras to track motorists
attending political events. Automated license plate readers (ALPR) are
used by law enforcement agencies throughout the country, ostensibly
to fight crime by finding stolen cars. But a March 18, 2009 state police
memo also documents the use of the Help Eliminate Auto Theft
(HEAT) camera to identify attendees at 2008 campaign events for
then-Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and Republican
vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin. It was not until 2012 that the
state police chief asked for an official determination of the legality of
the license plate reader program, and in a February 13, 2013 ruling,
Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli blasted the passive use of recording the comings and goings of innocent drivers who are not part of an
ongoing criminal investigation. Its future value to any investigation of
criminal activity is wholly speculative, Cuccinelli wrote. Therefore, with
no exemption applicable to it, the collection of license plate reader data
in the passive manner does not comport with the Data Acts strictures
and prohibitions, and may not lawfully be done.
TAG, YOURE IT
In a survey of 2,000 licensed adult men and women across the country,
Carinsurance.com found that half or more of Americas drivers would
support the use of special license plates to identify certain drivers on
the road:
- 49.4% support license plates identifying drivers older than 70.

ORANGE ZEST TURKEY BREAST

2 Large Turkey Breasts - And if you want to add legs & thighs in, then get
those also.
2 Large Oranges - zest completely; put aside
2 Cups of Orange Juice poured into a long glass baking dish. Place your
chicken pieces in here to marinate slightly, skin side down then flip after 15
minutes.
In a small glass or ceramic bowl, combine together as a
rub; in palmfuls: Rosemary, Parsley, Basil, Salt & Pepper. Have a traditional turkey roasting pan ready and sprayed down with cooking spray.
Take your legs, thighs and breasts out and put on a platter and generously
season both sides of chicken. Now, take McCormick Valencia Orange Zest
Peel seasoning in a bottle (in any spice aisle) and sprinkle both sides of
chicken generously. Place in roasting pan with skin side up on (legs will
be skin all around so just lay them in). Now, on my large Turkey Breasts, I
make a small slit and gently slide my fingers up under the skin and spread
the orange zest all up underneath the skin and distribute evenly. I do this
with the thighs also. The legs I just sprinkle on top. I tent the entire roasting
pan with Reynolds Heavy-Duty aluminum foil and cook at 350 degrees for
40 minutes (until you stick a fork in and juices run clear). I then remove
the foil and actually spray butter cooking spray (from a distance) onto the
chicken (easier than basting) and then leave the foil off and continue cooking until the skin is crispy, golden brown (you may need to rotate you legs).
But this all happens fast, like 10 minutes, so keep an eye on it. Remove
from oven and serve while super hot and skin super crispy. Excellent alternative to same old whole turkey, and theres no wasted parts and slice your
turkey breasts thin or thick, your choice. If you want to serve with gravy,
just use the quality bottled kind or make your own the old flour & chicken
broth way. But the flayva is phenomenal!!
Its deep, rich and with that citrus zing!
SPAGHETTI SQUASH
Peppers, Onions & Shrooms
This is a fab side-dish. If youve never had Spaghetti Squash, it has a
superb squash flavor but really fun to eat.
1 Large Spaghetti Squash - Cut in half & deseeded
1 Medium Yellow Pepper, Orange Pepper & Red Pepper
1 Box of Pre-Sliced Button Mushrooms
1 Medium Sweet Onion; Cut a thin piece all the way down and then cut

that in half. Do entire onion this way. Cut your Squash in half, take a spoon
ans scoop out any seeds, place on a flat pan thats covered in foil. Place
the inside part down and rub olive oil and salt & pepper all over the outer
flesh. Bake at 400 degrees for 45 mins. Remove and let cool slightly.
Take a dish towel and hold in one hand and using a Fork, start at the top
and scrape down in long strips and repeat doing until youve removed all
the flesh into a glass bowl. Do both sides. It will have the appearance of
spaghetti pasta, hence the name. While your Spaghetti Squash is baking
in the oven, cut off tops on all peppers and slice into slim strips, towel dry
mushrooms as they give off a lot of liquid. Start by adding butter to the
skillet and saute over medium heat, add in the mushrooms and get all that
golden brown, turn down to low and add onions and get them a golden
brown. Turn down to simmer and just let cook down a bit. Salt & pepper
to your taste with a dash of nutmeg. Take the saute mix and add to your
squash, add a couple pats of butter and gently toss to combine all. Top
with parsley. This is truly delicious and once you try it, youll be a major fan
forevva!
CARROT, PINEAPPLE & GINGER CAKE WITH BUTTER CREAM
CHEESE FROSTING
1 Pkg. of a quality Carrot Cake mix. Just go w/ a brand you trust.
1 Can of Pineapple Tidbits (thats how reads on
the label) Be sure and save juice off to side.
Youll need dry Ginger spice so grab that in the Spice aisle.
Make your cake mix as per pkg. instructions only add the can of Pineapple
Tidbits (strain off juice into a measuring cup) and add 1 tsp. extra of Vanilla
and one palmful of Ginger spice. Bake in whatever format youre using;
tube pan, 2 round cakes, cupcakes, whatevva. Remove from oven, take
a toothpick and poke holes all over the top of cake and carefully pour your
pineapple juice all over and down into holes. Now....lets make some frosting. In a large chilled glass bowl, add 2 sticks of softened real butter, 1 Tub
of Whipped Cream Cheese, 3 Cups of Confectioners Sugar, and apprx. 1
Cup of Whipping Cream (says so on box in Milk Section at grocery store),
also add in 1/4 cup of Honey (spray measuring cup w/ cooking spray so
wont stick to cup). Now, use your hand mixer on medium, and then go up
to high and blend until you get nice stiff peaks and then STOP. If you go too
far it will fall flat on you and theres no bringing it back. Frost your cake and
my Mom always taught me to take a knife and just tap the frosting gently all
over while pulling knife up and it gives it a spiked look all over.

Hypocrite
Matthew 7:4-6New King James Version (NKJV)
4Or how can you say to your brother, Let me remove the speck
from your eye; and look, a plank is in your own eye? 5Hypocrite! First
remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to
remove the speck from your brothers eye.
6Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before
swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in
pieces.
It is easy for people to be others physicians, rather than their own.
They can weed others gardens, while their own is overrun with weeds.
But charity (love) begins at home; and those that love not their own
soul, I will hardly trust them with mine. The one who criticizes alcoholics,
smokers and drug addicts and yet they cant stop biting their nails. Its
easy to see others weakness and not our own. While trying to help
others we have to be careful we dont get pulled into the same trap. No
wonder when we fix both our eyes on others problems, we lack a third
eye to see our own.
As we read the Gospel narratives we cannot fail to be impressed with
a singular mingling of severity and kindness in the teachings of our Lord.
His standard is high and leaves no room for compromise, yet he deals
gently with the one who
errors, and he urges a
similar line of conduct on
his disciples. He came
not to judge the world,
but to save it. He tells us
not to judge one another,
while we are to be severe
in judging ourselves.
Let us consider the evil
of criticizing others. In
judging others we are in danger of judgment ourselves.
The critic becomes unpopular. By their constant criticisms they create
animosity, and people are always on the lookout for their criticisms.
Others will be ready to become defensive. None of us is so perfect as
to be able to stand the fire of adverse criticism without a defect being
revealed. The fierce light that beats upon a critic should stop their
criticisms.
As unpleasant as it is for our faults to be exposed by men, it is far
worse, it is fatal, for them to bring down upon us the judgment of God.
Yet it is the repeated teaching of Christ that God will deal with us as we
deal with our neighbors. If we do not forgive them, God will not forgive
us. With the unmerciful he will show himself unmerciful. So long as we
make it our business to point out the sins of other people there is no
hope that our sins will be blotted out (Matthew 6:15).
The critic is the last to recognize their own sin. It may be huge as a
beam, yet they are quite unable to see it while they are busy in hunting
for the speck of dust in their brother and sisters eye. There is nothing
which so hinders a person from heart-searching self-examination,
nothing which so hardens him in self-complacent pride, as the habit of
finding fault with other people. The prophet may be a greater sinner than
the people whom they are denouncing; yet the very act of denunciation
blinds him to his own great wickedness. The whole world bears a

reputation of hypocrisy on the global level, because they are constantly

denouncing vices, while still in trade deals for the very things they
denounce.
Dont Drink and Driveyet there are liquor stores and bars on every
corner. Then we impose heavy fines and penalties for violating these laws?
ITS NOT JUST THE CHURCH THAT GIVES BIRTH TO
HYPOCROCY!!!
They would do better to look at home first. Religious people are horrified
at the sight of tattooed bikers covered in leather and long hair, as though
they have nothing to be ashamed by comparing themselves to drunkards
and harlots whom they denounce, they might well ask whether their pride,
un-charitableness, and covetousness may not be beams in the eyes of
God.
While there is a beam in their own eyes the critic cannot remove the mote
from his brothers eye. To do so is to perform a very delicate operation. Any
obscurity of vision will allow only a bumbled attempt that will give much
pain and yet will not affect its purpose. The beam must go first. While a
man is blinded to his sin, he cannot save his neighbor. Christ, the Savior
of the world, was sinless. Christians must seek deliverance from their own
sins before they undertake a crusade for the saving of their brethren. The
humility that confesses personal unworthiness is the spirit best fitted for
seeking to save the lost and degraded fellow-men and women.

No Thanksgiving Dinner
Tis the night before Thanksgiving and all through our house
No turkey is baking; I feel like a louse,
For I am all nestled, so snug in my bed;
Im not gettin up and Im not bakin bread.
No pies in my oven, no cranberry sauce
Cuz I give the orders, and I am the boss.
When out in the kitchen, there arose such a clatter
I almost got up to see what was the matter.
As I drew in my head and was tossing around
To the bed came my husband, he grimaced, he frowned.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
He scared me to death and I thought, Here he goes!
He spoke not a word as he threw back my quilt
And the look that he gave was intended to wilt.
So up to the ceiling my pillows he threw
I knew I had had it, his face had turned blue.
You prancer, you dodger, youre lazy, you vixen
Out yonder in kitchen, Thanksgiving youre fixin.
But he heard me explain, with my face in a pout:
Im just plain too tired and were eating out!
Q: What does a nosey pepper do?

The First Annual

Colonial Beach Bike Fest
Thanks to all who attended!
The fall-like gray skies, cool temperatures along with on and off rainy
weather could not stop hordes of
bikes of all makes and models from
streaming into the otherwise quaint
and quiet town of Colonial Beach,
Virginia for the First Annual Colonial
Beach Bikefest. . The event lived up
to the promise of being THE season
ending event to attend, as the party
began on Thursday October 9th and
rocked to October 12th with thousands of visiting bikers, locals and
town folks.

THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE 38

Washington St. became The Strip as bikes poured in non-stop. A steady

stream of visitors filled every neighborhood linked to Washington St. and all available parking was taken as far in any direction as the eye could see. All around
The Strip vendors of all types were set up with their goods and services. Shoppers were extremely happy to find such a wide variety of vending at this first annual event and enjoyed visiting all of the wonderful local businesses within Colonial
Beach. Some took a nice break from the action at Colonial Beachs only coffee
shop Tattle Tale owned by Bonnie Wyne whose barista Rebecca Beverly would
gladly serve you the java of your choice.
All-American Harley of Hughesville, MD. ,one of the major sponsors of the bike
fest, was on site all weekend with their general manager Steve Smurf Keene,
dealership staff and owner Don Smolinski, along with a tractor-trailer full of 2015
models of Harley-Davidsons available for free test rides on Friday and Saturday.
Their Harley girls were on hand as well, including Miss Colonial Beach Bike Fest,
Sandy Miller.
Dockside Restaurant and Tiki Bar, one of the event sponsors, had it going on
with non stop food and drinks flowing to those seated inside and to the lucky folks
outside on the deck accessible by the beach. Dockside rocked out with bands such
as Sam Grow, Big Money Band, The Perfect Storm, Yoko Says No, R&R Train and
hosted the International Bikini Team swimsuit contest, Hulu and Fire Dancer show
and the Bike and Golf Cart show.

High Tides Restaurant and Bar, another one of the major sponsors, hosted a hot dog eating contest, an ultimate beer
gut contest and a wing contest, along with hosting many bands such as Rock Bottom, (a local Beatles cover band), Longreef and Kashmir at their Black Pearl Tiki Bar. Owners Brian and Vicky were swamped beyond the wamp with customers.
Other business such as the Lighthouse Restaurant, the Hunan Diner and Kelseas Kitchen were stacked with bike festgoers. The Blue Heron Restaurant also has a Tiki bar and overflowed with people who found a good place to eat and get
their fill of drinks and good times.aich began back in 2006, hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina is non other than Swamp
da Wamp. Playing bike events from the mountains to the shores all along the east coast, this incredible band is a powerhouse in the southern US region with an ever-growing national presence. Headlining the main event was the 1970s
American Southern rock/hard rock band Molly Hatchet who is best known for their 1979 hit song Flirtin with Disaster.
Their forever faithful fans were packed in as far as you could see to rock out to their legendary music. Still touring worldwide, Molly Hatchet continues to make a major presence at any event they headline.
Southern Marylands WMDM Rocket Radio with their DJ Ripley, were also sponsors and staunch supporters of this
event. Ripley did their radio show on Friday and one on Saturday at High Tides restaurant and Town Hill where the bands
performed..
After a year of planning, the collective vision of the bike fest committee members, was to revitalize Colonial Beach back
to prominence as a destination resort town as it was in the 1950s and 60s. In those days, Colonial Beach was a hot spot
for those who wished for a beautiful beach experience combined with all the wonderful aspects of a resort town atmosphere. The vision of the bikefest committee had the support of Carey Geddes, President of the Colonial Beach Chamber
of Commerce, who knows this town is/was a best kept secret and can support a return to glory.
Thanks to all the folks that put many hours in to make this event a reality. Big THANKS goes to artist Jay Haiden, who is
not only one of the Bike Fest committee members but also one of the unsung heroes of the Bike Fest who put in countless
hours along with his heart, soul and talent to workdesigning all of the imagery and graphicsfor every aspect of this event.
The Colonial Beach Police and Sheriff Departments, State Police, Colonial Beach Fire & Rescue and the Town of Colonial
Beach all worked together to help create a plan for making this event as safe as possible and a fun event for all.
Mark your calendars - 2nd Annual Colonial Beach Bikefest, Oct 8th 11th, 2015

WHERED THAT COME FROM?

Spill the Beans

Meaning: To reveal a secret

History: In Ancient Greece, beans were used to vote for
candidates entering various organizations. One container
for each candidate was set out before the group members,
who would place a white bean in the container if they approved of the candidate and a black bean if they did not.
Sometimes a clumsy voter would accidentally knock over
the jar, revealing all of the beans and allowing everyone to
see the otherwise confidential votes.
