Collaborative Assignment (with individual grades)
There are two types of syntheses:
Explanatory Synthesis
Argument Synthesis
The focus of this assignment is synthesis. You will carefully research and present your findings to the class
in the form of a lecture and accompanying handout. This handout will be used in your synthesis essay at
units end. Please view the links on the unit post to help with your research. Be sure to always cite your
sources.
Language Analysis:
Group 1: realism/regionalism/local color as related to setting & characters
Group 2: satire/irony/wit/sarcasm
Group 3: point of view/bildungsroman/narrative style
Group 4: symbols
Group 5: motifs/allusions
Group 6: inversion/juxtaposition
Task:
1. Analyze how Twains language addresses essential questions and theme.
2. Reveal the influence/impact of the device on the reader.
3. Discover the significance of the device and how it connects to the overall meaning of the text.
Instructions:
Each group will teach the class through the following:
1) a 20 minute PowerPoint or Keynote (no Google or Prezi presentations)
2) a comprehensive worksheet/handout for the class that coincides with the presentation (A
blank and a completed handout are emailed or hard copy submitted to Ms. Rhude at least
two school days prior to presentation date). The handout must contain a minimum of two
quotes or sections (including page numbers and chapters) of text for from each presenter.

are at work in the text and their significance
