History of Rap/Hip Hop Genre
Rapping mainly involves the speaking or chanting of rhyming lyrics to a set beat. The
rhyming created by rappers is considered by many to be one of the most sophisticated
styles of poetry. These rhymes often address provocative subjects such as sex, violence and
socio-political issues.

More than a century before Rap exploded onto the American Music scene, West African
musicians were telling stories rhythmically, with just the beat of a drum for accompaniment.
These singing poets from Africa lay down the foundation for modern day American Rap
music.
Rapping first gained its popularity in the U.S. in the 1970s as a sort of street art, especially
among African American teenagers. But it wasnt until 1979, when the Sugar hill Gang
released their hit, Rappers Delight, that record producers took notice of this emerging
musical genre. After this numerous rap acts, including Run-DMC and N.W.A., surfaced, and
raps audience began to grow rapidly. It wasnt just African American male rappers either:
By the 1980s, white rap bands such as the Beastie Boys and female rap bands such as Salt-nPepa were reaching the top of the charts.
As the genre grew bigger and bigger we could see that Rap would clearly continue for
centuries and this is shown through Rap standing the test of time as its popularity rages on
with todays artists such as Eminem, 50 Cent, The Game and Jay-Z creating hit after hit.
