Description

of Group Project Preliminary Design

The preliminary design report consists of two main parts: (1) a group report and (2) individual report.
The group report summarizes the problem space and the proposed conceptual model in a half to one
page. It then elaborates the proposed metaphor in terms of the main screen design (for the purpose of
low-fidelity prototyping), including the descriptions of the interface design (i.e., how it satifies the
metaphor). Remember the consistency design principle, the main screen should have the same looks
and feels as the other screens (the screens developed in each individual report). Explain also what set of
tools that your group plans to use.
The second main part consists of a compilation of individul reports. Each individual report must adhere
to the following format.

Usability & User Experience Goals

Easy to use, the process of form filling is
intutitive so that new users can easily use
the application.
Estetically Pleasing, the looks of student
registration form should be esthetically
pleasing.

Efficiency: it is faster to add a new course.

Satisfying: visual and/or audible feedback

notifying task accomplishement.

Design Ideas
The form layout is designed so that it looks
like a paper-based form.

The form adopts minimalist design, neat
and balanced use of white space.
User can add a new course by selecting
from a list of eligible courses given as a
drop box when he/she clicks the
corresponding field. Alternatively, user can
directly type the course code/name and
simultaneously the course list in the drop
box is dynamically adapted so that it
contain relevant and valid course names to
select.
Provide a message to user that the new
course has been successfully added. The
message will then dissappear within a few
seconds. A nice to hear sound (simulating
inserting something) can be added as an
alternate feedback or in combination with
visual feedback.

Afterwards, develop a low-fidelity prototpe that you believe will satisfy the main requirement of your
proposed system. Discuss your interface design with the team members and the users as well.
Report your design in the following format:

1. Concept
Usability/Experience goals
Interface Design

:
:
: You can use Powerpoint, Visual Studio, FrontPage, Flash,
or other rapid application develepment tools for the
interface design. For the report, provide only the screen
shot of your preliminary design. If involving two or more
screens, show all of them including screen ordering in
transition diagram, such as selecting X button will
result in screen Y, etc.

Description of design: provide a description of your design. Explain your interface/interaction
designs in terms of the design ideas as above.

Prepare a file Preliminary _Design_X.zip (where X is your group number). The zipped file contains:
1. Pdf document file containing a complete descriptions of your group preliminary design as
described above.
2. Slide presentation file of class discussion (in ppt or pptx format). Present your interface design
as a screen shot.
Submit the zipped file online by 9 November 2014 at 23.55.
