The lords of 1st, 4th and 7th navamsa of a sign represent the Deva ("Divine beings" and

constructive forces); persons born with any of these navamsas rising in the Lagna are generous,
religious, wealthy, powerful and influential. Persons born in the 2nd, 5th or the 8th navamsa
whose lords represent the Naras ("Human beings" and their efforts) are generally kind, good
natured, engaged in the pursuits of human welfare and reputed; and in the 3rd, the 6th or the
9th navamsa whose lords represent the Rakshasas ("Demonic beings" and evil forces) are
selfish, cruel, violent, destructive and possess many negative qualities. Moreover, the Lagna-rasi
and the Lagna-lord should not form or occupy the 6th, the 8th or the 12th bhava in the
Navamsa Chart nor the lords of the 6th, the 8th or the 12th of the Rasi Chart associate with the
Navamsa Lagna or its lord.

In the Jaimini System of prognostication the use of seven karakas determined according to the
respective degrees of the seven planets is recommended and their navamsa-occupation is
noted its highly important.

Birth in Vargottama Lagna is considered very fortunate and planets in Vargottama are very
strong and confer benefic results if they do not occupy inimical signs. The occupation of own
navamsa by a planet is superior to the occupation of its exaltation-navamsa. The planet which is
in its exaltation sign in the Rasi-chart but situated in its neecha-navamsa (debilitated in
Navamsa-chart) produces its bad results very soon, however, a planet situated in its debilitation
sign in the Rasi-chart but in its uccha-navamsa (exalted in Navamsa-chart) invariably confers
auspicious results. If at the time of birth planets are placed in inimical signs even if they be in
Vargottama they render all Raja yogas useless, the same is true if many planets are in
debilitation. The Rajayogakarakas cease to be Rajayogakarakas if the happen to occupy their
neecha-navamsas. Saturn occupying its own or exaltation sign does not afflict natural benefics
or their yoga-formations provided it does not simultaneously occupy its neecha-navamsa but all
planets occupying navamsas ruled by Jupiter usually act as benefics and if situated in a kendra,
in the 9th or in the 2nd house from the lagna make one very learned, famous and even
establish a new school of thought or system. Rahu and Ketu (mythology) do not rule any
navamsa-division but a navamsa of Mars is to be found in all signs.

Results of planetary periods (dashas) and sub-periods (antra-dashas) vary in accordance with
the particular location of those bhava-lords in the Navamsa-chart. A planet otherwise strongly

placed in the Rasi-chart with reference to a specific bhava or its lord does not produce in its
own dasha/antra-dasha the anticipated good results relating to that bhava in full if it happens
to be situated in the navamsa-chart in the 6th, the 8th or the 12th from the sign occupied by
that particular bhava-lord e.g. the lord of the Lagna situated in the 3rd house in conjunction
with the lord of the 3rd gives prosperous, happy and helpful brothers but if in the navamsachart the lord of the lagna is in the 6th, the 8th or the 12th from the lord of the 3rd then there
may be enmity with brothers or sorrow to them. If the lord of the 2nd house is in conjunction
with the lord of the 10th situated in the 10th house and the lord of the lagna is involved in
Rajayoga one secures a high political or administrative position during the dasha/antra-dasha of
the lord of the 2nd house but in case in the navamsa-chart the lord of the 2nd is in the 6th, the
8th or the 12th from the lord of the 10th then contrary results will be experienced.

Navamsa (Navmansh, Navansh, Navamsha, Ninth Harmonic) literally means Ninth Division.
Vedic Astrologers have always given a great deal of importance to the Navamsa chart. The
Navamsa chart is treated as the primary basis along with Rasi chart, for judging a planets
strength. Kalyana Varma in Saravali, Mantreswara in Phaladeepika, Baidyanath Dixit in Jatak
Parijat, Varahamihira in Brihat Jatak, Parashar in Brihat Parashar Hora Shastra, all refer to the
importance of Navamsa in chart analysis. Even a relatively recent astrologer like the late B.V.
Raman states that the strength of a planet should be judged after a careful study of its
disposition in Rasi and Navamsa.

Why is the Navamsa so important? Well, the 9th house in any horoscope is considered the most
auspicious house, its lord is considered the greatest benefic to a chart. The 9th is the house of
fortune, of luck, and of Dharma. A strong 9th house can often go a long way in countering the
other malefic aspects in a horoscope. The house whose lord is placed in 9th house usually
prospers. The Navamsa is therefore the fortune chart. It can make or break your luck. A
strong Rasi chart has to be backed by a strong Navamsa, or it may not live up to its potential.
The Rasi chart is like a radio. A strong Navamsa is like a strong signal, which ensures that you
hear your favourite station. A weak Navamsa is like a weak signal, even if your radio is of
excellent make, you cant hear anything!

The Rasi chart is your physical existence, the circumstances that you live in, the things that you
do. The Moon chart is your mental world, how you see things and how you react. The Navamsa

is the hidden force, the invisible hand of destiny that decides what the result of your efforts will
be.

Reading a Navamsa Chart

There are some simple rules for judging the strength of a planet using Navamsa.
1. Vargottama is the division where the planet is in the same sign in Rasi and Navamsa. Such
a planet is extremely powerful to give results; its Dasa will most definitely be eventful. ( A lot of
astrologers simply look at the Avastha of a planet and deem it weak. Sun in infancy in Aries
when Vargottama is extremely powerful, I will not call it weak. )
2. A planet in its exaltation or own sign in Navamsa is to be considered strong, and usually gives
good results pertaining to its lordship or Karaka signification. A planet in its debilitation in
Navamsa is weak, unless that is offset by Neechbhanga.
3. A planet involved in exchange of signs (Parivartana) in the Navamsa should be considered
strong.
4. The lord of a house, whether in Rasi or Navamsa, conjunct or aspected by a Karaka in the
Navamsa gives good results. For e.g., If the 7th lord of the Rasi or Navamsa is conjunct Venus, it
gives good results pertaining to spouse.
5. Affliction to a planet by the Nodes in the Navamsa gives peculiar or warped results. For e.g..,
Jupiter afflicted by Rahu in the Navamsa may not necessarily mean harm to children; it could
indicate some problems in the relationship or simply an indifferent attitude towards them.
6. The Navamsa is *the* chart for marriage and spouse. It is the best indicator of how a
persons marital life will turn out to be. A malefic in 7th in Rasi is bad, but in Navamsa it is
worse. Afflictions to 7th lord or Venus in the Navamsa chart are bad for marriage; this applies
irrespective of the said planets disposition in Rasi.
7. For planets that are not in their own or exaltation Navamsas; the position, strength and Rasi
lordship of the Navamsa dispositor is a major influence. The planet acquires the flavour of its
Navamsa disposition. For e.g., 10th lord in Mercury ruled Navamsa could indicate a career in
communications or accountancy. 10th lord in Mars ruled Navamsa could mean a career in
surgery, or the army, or engineering.

8. The planets that are in conjunction or opposition in Navamsa should be given priority while
predicting results. For e.g., Consider the following position: Mars opposite Venus in Navamsa,
aspected by Saturn via 10th Drishti. Here the Venus opposition is more important than the
Saturn aspect. Indicates a sibling (since Mars is Karaka for siblings), female, with artistic
inclinations (significations of Venus).

Some Observations

Mars conjunct Rahu or Ketu in Mercurys Navamsa gives skin or stomach problems.
Venus conjunct Rahu or Ketu in Navamsa indicates marriage to a person outside of the natives
community. Also gives problems in relationships.
Saturn conjunct Moon in Navamsa indicates stinginess, or an obsession with money.
Moon and Mars conjunct in Navamsa indicate gynaecological problems in women and
bloodrelated problems in men. This is especially true when the conjunction occurs in Cancer or
Scorpio.
Venus, though Vargottama in Jyeshtha, can still give relationship problems.
Jupiter in exaltation or own sign in Navamsa usually gives a sound financial position to the
native, especially as age increases.
Saturn in Leo Navamsa is almost always bad, except when Vargottama.
Natives with Sun in Aries Navamsa go bald sooner than most people. They also tend to have
large foreheads.
Mars in Venus Navamsa gives a taste for the good life. If afflicted, will give vices. Venus in Mars
Navamsa gives an aggressive, emotional outlook in relationships.
A Mars Venus exchange in Navamsa could indicate failure of marriage, or, a love interest not
leading to marriage. It could also indicate unfaithfulness or a multiplicity of relationships.
1.1.
Navamsa is the most important sub-division in Hindu Astrology. In Predictive Astrology
Navamsa occupies an outstanding position. Usually Rasi Chart and Navamsa Chart are tagged
together in the South India. Techniques based on the Navamsa Division has been extensively
used in Jaimini system, Kala Chakra Dasa, Sarvato-bhadra-Chakra, and Ankana Sastra by
Vyaghra pada.

2.2.
Mantreswara in Phaladeepika, said that Swochche neechamsage Du:khi Neeche
Swochchamsage sukhi For example Sun in Mesha sign and Tula Navamsa Is of no use for being
in exalted Sign. On the other hand the Sun being in Tula Rasi in Mesha Navamsa gives good
results.
3.3.
In Manasagari the author is of the opinion in his own words prayo navamse akhilam
and : Jatakaphalm navamse meaning that all aspects of life can be gleaned through Navamsa
Chart.
4.4.
Some authors gave importance to Rising Navamsa [ Navamsa Lagna] , and some to the
Navamsa occupied by the Moon at Birth. Navamsa Chart is given more importance in
Parasharas Shodasa Vargas, because it isvery significant that Nakshatra Quarter is identified
with Navamsa. Grahanam Amsakam Balam
5.5.
In Vimsopaka Bala Rasi gets 6 Points out of 20 and Navamsa is next in Importance with
5 Points. And Drekkana with 4 Points.
6.6.
If the planet is in the same Sign in both Rasi and Navamsa Charts it is said that the
Planet is in Vargottama Navamsa and the Planet is considered as Strong and gives good results.
Its Rasi Dispositor and Navamsa Dispositor are one and the Same Planet.
7.7.
The First in Chara signs [0d to 3d-20m], Middle in Fixed signs [ 13-20 to 16d-40m], and
Last Navamsa in Duel signs [26-40 to 30d] are Vargottama Navamsa.
8.8.
Navamsa chart gives clue about the exact position of the Planet to a great accuracy.
Suppose for Meena Lagna if Sun is in Vargottama, then we can say that Sun is between 26d40m to 30d
9.9.
When Rasi Chart is the Body, then Navamsa is the Backbone. If Rasi is the tree, then
Navamsa is the fruit.
10.10. If the Rasi Chart is the Photo, Navamsa is the X-Ray , If we consider Rasi as the Maha
Dasa, then Navamsa is the Bhukti.
11.11. Rasi is the Sthoola and Navamsa is the Sookshma Vibagha.
12.12. If a Planet is in a Pushkara Navamsa, the status of life is Higher. Pushkara Navamsa has
been defined in Vidya Madhaveeyam. It is also called Pushkaramsa and it is a particular degree
which gives auspicious effects.
13.

5th Navamsa

14.1.
It is believed that, if the birth-chart is body of Kaalpurush then the Navamsa chart is its
soul. The accurate prediction is incomplete without each other. The results of a planetary
positions cannot be determined without the birth-chart while the strength of the planet which
are in the malefic or benefic position in the ascendant chart can be cross checked with the
position of the planets in the Navamsa chart.
15.2.
As per the ancient scholars and astrologers, if the planet is weak in the birth chart and
is strong in the Navamsa then the planet is not weak. In the same way if the planet is
inauspicious in the birth chart and is auspicious in the Navamsa chart then the planet will be
considered as auspicious. If the conjunction of ascendant lord of birth-chart and Navamsa chart
is auspicious, then the person will be fortunate.

3.

Classification and Lords of Navamsa

The lords of Navamsa are as follows:

a. The lord of first, 4th and 7th Navamsa is Deva which means the divine lord. It represent the
qualities of generosity, power, wealth. Native born in this part of Navamsa are generous,
religious and powerful.
b. The lord of 2nd, 5th and 8th Navamsa represent Nara which means a man or person of kind,
soul and reputed. Engaged in the pursuits of human welfare.
c. The lords of 3rd, 6th and 9th Navamsa represent the charatertistics of Rakshaha or a demon.
This part represent cruel, quarry, violent, selfish and person of a negative qualities.
1. 4.
In Navamsa two things are must to be seen. The Lagna Bhava and Lagna Lord should
not be into 6th, 8th or 12th Bhava in D-9.
1.
a)

If it is moveable sign it should not be in 6th Navamsa or 8th Navamsa,

b)

if it is fixed Sign it should not to be in 4th Navamsa and

c)

in Dual sign it should not be in 2nd, 4th, & 8th Navamsa.

d) Secondly, 6th, 8th & 12th lord of D-1 should not get associated with Lagna Bhava or lagna
lord in D-9. When the Lagna and Lagna Lord of D-9 gets associated with 6, 8 or 12 of D-9. The
first level of afflictions will give the affects in the Mahadasha of Planets connecting to these
Lagna Lord and Lagna. The second level of afflictions is in the Antradasha of these planets and
the third level in the Pratyanter Dashas. One will experience these kinds of troubles and
anxietities in life.

Blessings of Pushkara Navamsa

Pushkaramsa represent Pushkara Navamsa of 3d-20 in a Rasi which is its most auspicious part.
Each Rasi has two Pushkara Navamsa and thus their total in 122 = 24. These Navamsa are
owned by the benefic planets and can predict benefic results, when applying in muhurata,
prasana and timing of events, Jupiter when in pushkara bless the native with plenty of wealth
and progress in life.

1. The spiritual essence of a horoscope lies in its Navamsa chart. The sub-divisions of a
planetary sign (the sign inhabited by a given planet) have a direct collocation with various
phases of his life which in turn has a direct bearing on his spiritual character. Certain underlying
principles guide the interpretation of Navamsa.

2. The nine fold divisions are guided by different lords. The lords of first, fourth and seventh
Navamsa are of divine significance.

3.

The lords of second, fifth and eighth denote spiritual reputation and kindness;

4.

whereas the

5.

lords of third, sixth and ninth are demonic in significance.

6. Pushkaramasha is the most auspicious element of a Navamsa. Each zodiac rashi or sign
has two Pushkara Navamsa.

7. Thus with a sum total of twelve rashis or signs, there are twenty four Pushkara
Navamshas. The peculiarity of this lies in the fact that they are owned by beneficial planets.
Consequently, such planets during their tenure ship bestow on the concerned individual
abundance of wealth, riches and progress. This is particularly true of Jupiter. The concerned
planet in pushkara blesses the native with wealth and good prospects.

8. The fifth house of Navamsa chart indicates the spiritual self of a person. One needs to
have a look at the placement of Sun and its friendly planets to find out to what extent the
efforts of ones good will and action may bear fruits.

9. On the other hand, the rising Ascendant Or Lagna, its lord and the third house have direct
connection with the elements of patience and endurance.10. Similarly, the rising lord, the
seventh house and its lord, Venus and its friendly bodies have a direct bearing on ones better
half.
1.11. The third house and is lords are associated with overseas settlement and disease. The
combined features of the third, seventh, ninth and the twelfth house together with the
respective placement of their lords signify overseas travel.
2.12. Likewise the lagna its lord, the sixth lord and Ketu are linked with diseases whereas
Rahu and its transit have a link with the curability of diseases.
3. The planet of the ascending sign and its lord should not ideally occupy the sixth, eighth and
twelfth places in a Navamsa. The given locations make for their afflictions leading to anxieties
and trouble during their tenureship.
1. Planets weakly positioned in natal chart but
heightened in Navamsa are supposed to produce favorable results. The reverse is also true.
Planets or aspects denoted by those planets should be equal in strength in both the natal and
Navamsa chart so as to produce the desired result.
4.

Navamsa predictions

2. Planets strengthened in Navamsa chart are supposed to be thrice more powerful than
that in natal chart.

3. A planet occupying the same place in birth as well as that of the Navamsa chart is
supposed to be very powerful.

4. Thus prediction should always be made in context of the Navamsa, birth chart and that
showing the transitory phases of various planets.

5. The chart is particularly helpful in spheres of marriage, mental matching with ones
spouse. It also helps to predict the time of marriage and how delays can be overcome.

1. Analysis of a given Navamsa chart testifies to the general prospects and dispositions of
ones life. The ascendant sign and its respective lord bare testimony to the natives colour
shape, general nature and the overall mental makeup.

2.

Moons Navamsa and that of its ascendant lord usually determine a natives physical look.

Effects of Navamsa

3. Transitory effects of Moon in the context of ones birth chart and that of his Navamsa has
profound bearing on his nature. The entire set of Navamsa has its prolific bearing on
individuals physical features and that of his innate disposition.

Thus houses of a birth chart should be correlated to that of his Navamsa. Conjunction or
opposition of planets should be given due priority for predicting results.

There are NO HOUSES and ASPECTS in Navansha , please get a hold of the subject

sreenivasdesabhatla on February 10, 2014 at 6:26 pm

Any Varga Chart is studied with reference to the Natal Chart. The Varga Chart is also treted as a
main chart and SarvashtakaVarga is also prepared and the Star position is also calculated.
Navamsa Chart is the Ninth Harmonic Chart and can also studied independantly and analyse the
Yogas also and why not aspects? Dont get confused my dear Friend.

PK on April 15, 2014 at 12:06 am

Thanks for the response Sir but this is simply incorrect. Graha aspects are based on longitude of
planets and so cannot exist in navamsa etc. Also Yoga exist only in Rasi. There is no separate
independent chart to look at. Navamsa covers dignity and colors the results by planets/houses
falling in certain amsa. Please do look at the definition of aspects in BPHS or any major classical
text.

sreenivasdesabhatla on June 4, 2014 at 5:19 pm

You are Mistaken. Longitudes of planets in the Navamsa for that matter for all Vargas can be
calculted , so aspects are also effective in all Varga Charts.

In your Horoscope as per the particulars provided- the L-of the ASC SUN is in Vargottama, But it
is placed in the 12th House in the Navamsa which is a TRIKA House. This causes some
impediments. The Lord of the 5th JUP is placed in the 2nd along with a Yoga karaka MARS. But
both are placed in the Star of the 12th House. Lord of the 10th VEN is placed in the 12th a
TRIKA House. But well placed in Navamsa in his Moolt Sign. But with a drawback of Conjn with
SAT(R) who is the Lord of 5th and 6th .
MER L-of 2nd and 11th H is in Exalt in Navamsa. JUP L- of 5th is in Exalt in Navamsa in the
Labhasthana.
Finally JUP Dasa Chandra Bhuki may not be that much favourable compared to JUP/MARS from

Summing Up:

All these rules have to be applied without undermining the importance of the Rasi chart. The
results of planets with respect to their Nakshatra placement and their lordship are paramount.
The Navamsa should be looked at as a tool that complements the Rasi, not as something that
does away with it! The Navamsa is a window to the Divine within us, it is the measure of our
fortune, our destiny.
