ABSTRACT
Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women beside
cervix cancer in Indonesia. Understanding the pathogenesis, various risk factors
and histopathology characteristic is ideal to determine suitable therapy, early
detection and prevention of this cancer.
A descriptive study to determine the prevalence of breast cancer in women
based on age and histopathology types at RSUP H.Adam Malik Medan. Female
patient diagnosed in 2009 with breast cancer were analysed their age , type of
histopathology, location of cancer and stadium at diagnosis.
Total of 146 patient were analysed. Mean age of patient at presentation
was 47.9 years, ranging from 24-80 years. Highest prevalence age group at
diagnosis was <50years (61,6%). Among various type of histopathology, Invasive
Ductal Carcinoma (78,1%) was the highest frequency followed by Invasive
Lobular Carcinoma (13%). The tendency of developing breast cancer were
slightly higher in left breast (50%) than the right breast (45,5%). Most patient was
found at stadium IV (39,7% ) and stadium IIIB (34,2 %) at time of diagnose.
There are various determining factors for development of breast cancer,
age plays important role in early detection. Studying their stadium is crucial in
evaluating prevention programs as well as the histopathology to determine the
prognosis of a patient. Education is the key to reduce the incidence of breast
cancer.
