AAA: Wisconsin gas prices fall to four-year low

The average price of gas in Wisconsin
has dropped below $3 per gallon for the
first time since December 2010, ending its
longest streak ever above that price,
according to AAA. This milestone for
Wisconsins state average comes about a
week after the national average, and is significant because about 40 percent of
American adults believe that gasoline is
too high when the price reaches that
level, according to a AAA survey conducted in March.
Gas prices fell over 30 cents per gallon
in the last month, the steepest decline since
2008. Much of the decline can be attributed to falling crude oil prices, which
accounts for two-thirds of the cost of gasoline. West Texas Intermediate has dropped
more than $25 per barrel since this year's
peak price of $107.73 on June 20. The
price for a barrel of WTI closed at $80.54
last Friday, down slightly from the previous
week's close of $81.27.
"Abundant oil supplies, winter-blend
fuels and low demand continue to place
downward pressure on gas prices," said
Nick Jarmusz, Director of Public Affairs for
AAA Wisconsin. "Crude oil prices seem to
be leveling out, which may slow the rate of
future drops in gasoline prices, but we
haven't hit the bottom yet."
Prior to last weekends drop below $3

per gallon, the national average price of

gas had remained more expensive than
$3.00 per gallon for 1,409 consecutive
days. During that 46-month period, gas
prices averaged $3.52 per gallon and
reached as high as $3.98 per gallon on
May 5, 2011.
AAA anticipates gasoline prices may
continue to drop in the near term, but it is
possible that prices in many areas will
begin to stabilize soon. Unless there are
unexpected developments, gasoline should
remain relatively inexpensive this winter due
to lower demand and typical seasonal
trends. By spring, higher gas prices may
return due to refinery maintenance,
increased demand and a return to summerblend gasoline.
These lower prices are a welcome holiday gift that may not last as long as most of
us would like, continued Jarmusz. It is possible the current prices will soon be a faded
memory, so enjoy it while you can. The days
of paying more than $3 per gallon for gas
have regrettably not gone away forever.
Gas prices typically decline in the
autumn due to decreased driving and the
switchover to winter-blend gasoline, but
prices have fallen faster than many expected this year due to sharply lower crude oil
prices. The price of West Texas
Intermediate crude oil has dropped more

than $20 per barrel since late June due to

strong production and concerns about the
global economy, particularly in Europe and
Asia. There also are reports that some
OPEC nations, such as Saudi Arabia, would
be willing to let prices fall to maintain a
competitive market share.

Crude oil is the main cost associated

with gasoline and represents about twothirds of the price of a gallon of gas. It is
estimated that every ten dollar per barrel
change in the price of crude oil results in a
25-cent change in the price of a gallon of
gasoline.

REMEMBERS CLIENT, HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR

At the age of 17, Jonas Gutman
was sent to the first of five
consecutive concentration camps.
Prisoners were divided into 2
lines; Jonas switched lines so a
man could be with his brother.
Jonas lived, while the other line
was sent to the gas chamber.
When Jonas health declined,
daughter Fran called Comfort
Keepers for relief. Fran felt
assured a competent caregiver
would be sent, someone her
father liked and she could trust.
Fran could finally relax knowing
her dad was in good hands.
Jonas said his caregiver Lisa is

and treated Jonas with kindness

Dear Dr. Winter, I have been told I have no bone left

under my dentures. I keep getting sharp stinging pain
when I bite down and my dentures pop out when I
open my mouth even with denture adhesive. What are
my options and how much does this cost?
Dear Jan, I am sorry you are having problems with
your dentures. Teeth maintain bone. When teeth are
removed you can lose 40% of the remaining bone the
first year after tooth loss. This bone loss will continue
every year until implants are placed to stop bone loss.
This means you can lose height of bone and width of
bone continuously. When you wear dentures the
dentures may appear tight but over time as the bone
resorbs the dentures get looser and looser. That is why
dentures should be relined or remade every 3-5 years
to try and maintain a better fit between the denture
acrylic and the bone.
Dentures can move up to 1/2 an inch during a
normal chewing cycle. That movement coupled with
bone loss can quickly lead to exposure of nerves that
can cause pain from denture pressure.
Solutions to nerve pain involve stabilizing your
dentures or moving into "fixed" teeth again. This is
done by placing implants or mini-implants into the
jaws to support your dentures. How many implants
you receive is often dependant upon your budget. I
have written many articles on Upgradeable Dentistry
which is a concept that allows patients to place
implants before bone loss occurs. They can then
continue to add implants over time as their budgets
allow until they have enough support to have a
permanent bridge or "fixed teeth." Placing implants as
soon as teeth are lost helps prevent more costly bone
grafts later on. There are ways of making Snap-OnDentures with a few implants so that the implants can
have attachments that the denture clips to. This
prevents slipping of the teeth and eliminates the need
for denture adhesive which can be quite annoying to
clean out each day. If enough implants can be afforded
then a bar can be made to snap the denture on to and
this allows the implants to be splinted and increases
their strength.
If we have 6 implants in the upper arch (or more)
and at least 5 implants in the lower arch then a hybrid

Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

or "fixed" denture can be made for our patients.
If you have lost too much bone according to your
dentist, there may be grafting procedures you can
undergo to add bone for supporting implants. That
can involve using bone from your chin (chin block
grafts), bone from your ramus (the area by your
wisdom teeth), or using hip grafts to re-grow the
bone. Alternatively, ridge spreading or bone
reduction can be undertaken to try and create a
platform that will allow implants to be placed.
We welcome our readers to come in for a no charge
implant consultation or a comprehensive examination
and implant evaluation to see what your options are for
eliminating denture pain. Please see our videos, photos
and articles at www.hamptondentalassociates.com
We look forward to meeting you! Ask about our
internet or Hometown Publication special. Please
note any implant case started before 12/10/14 will be
given a $300 discount if you bring in this article.

Proposed Milwaukee Marathon gets early boost from committee

Legislation recommended for approval
today by the Common Councils Public Works
Committee could pave the way for an inaugural
Milwaukee Marathon in November 2015.
The committee voted unanimously in favor
of a resolution authored by Alderman Jim Bohl
which directs the City Attorney to draft an operating agreement with Milwaukee Marathon,
Inc. for the staging of the 26.2-mile marathon
on city streets in November 2015. The full operating agreement will most likely go to the full
Common Council for its consideration in early
2015.
Alderman Bohl said the race would start

and finish on the lakefront, running a route that

would stretch through various neighborhoods in
the city. The organizers also hope to work with
Summerfest to secure the festival grounds for a
post event bash. This is just the first step toward
bringing a major running event with significant
potential economic impact to Milwaukee, and
one that would bear our citys name, he said.
We have already seen a number of cities hosting successful marathon events, and we know
the running community is a robust one and will
travel.
Co-sponsor of the file, Alderman Willie C.
Wade said, Not only will this event be a show-

case for the citys diverse neighborhoods and

people, but it also offers the opportunity to
show runners and their guests a one-of-a kind
post-race bash, Milwaukee style, at our citys
impressive Henry Maier Festival Park.
Alderman Joe Davis, Sr., also a co-sponsor,
said he is hoping the marathon can become a
positive and economically successful event for
Milwaukee. New races in Milwaukee have
proven wildly popular, including the
Summerfest Rock n Sole Run, so I would expect
the Milwaukee Marathon to follow suit in con-

tributing in a positive way to Milwaukees local

economy, Alderman Davis said.
