OAMR - Optical Automatic Meter Reading

The innovative OAMR (Optical Automatic Meter Reading) system enables smart meter functionality
(AMR) on existing utility meter and does not require its full-scale replacement preserving existing meter
infrastructure. The optical reader unit attaches non-intrusively to the front of the existing utility meter,
collects and converts meter readouts to digital values and sends them automatically to up level systems,
which enables real time and periodic reporting of gas, electricity and water consumption, providing
accurate data for invoicing and reporting, generating greater customer service to the end user and more
accurate financial planning for the utility companies.

The OAMR device reads the meter readout continuously at short intervals. It then transforms the reading
to digital values and sends the values through a local wireless network to a data Mobile Gateway unit
that is connected to the smart grid through the mobile network or Ethernet. This way, the system due to
its unique reading technology is able to provide the utility company with the same accurate information
as a smart meter, but without the need for replacing the existing meter infrastructure.

The OAMR - Optical Meter Reader

The OAMR reader is a small low cost optical
reader that is mounted on the front of an
existing mechanical utility meter.
The unit constantly monitors the meter and translates the mechanical
display to digital values according to a unique patent pending method.
The unit adapts to displacements and environmental changes. The
digital values are transmitted wireless to a data concentrator or home gateway that is connected to the
utility company. The utility meters can work as a standalone unit or connected in networks with up to
1000 units.

OAMR Mobile Gateway

The Northstar Mobile 3G Gateway connects with up to 1000
Northstar modules and provides a mobile data Gateway that
connects to the mobile Internet through 3G or LTE data
connectivity. The units coordinate the local data communication,
stores collected data and provides network security. Optical
readers, homed displays and payment gateways as well as
general IO modules can be connected in with the unit. The unit supports home area, neighborhood area
and mobile wireless connectivity. The Modem securing wireless internet connection is included.

System architecture
1. The OAMR unit is built around a microprocessor with optical image sensor technology and wireless
connectivity.
2. The units connect in a wireless mesh network based on IEEE 802.15.4 2,4 GHz standard (Zigbee
or similar) or directly through USB, M-Bus or Wireless M-Bus.
3. A data Gateway controls the local network with up to 1000 connected optical readers, collects
data, stores data and provides mobile data connectivity.
4. The data Gateway connects to Northstar cloud service or up level systems through mobile
GPRS/3G connectivity, wired Ethernet, WiFi and Wireless M-Bus.

The OAMR system is a light weight non intrusive, easy to deploy and cost effective system for
automatic meter reading in Industrial, Residential, Building or Utility Sector Applications. The
low cost, easy to install, non intrusive system provides smart meter functionality preserving the
existing meter infrastructure.

Utility meter data collection and smart grid connectivity

With the OAMR units connected in a network to the OAMR Mobile 3G Gateway, data is collected and
made available on the internet / smart grid for data management and monitoring and control systems.
The OAMR units connect in a wireless mesh network to the Mobile 3G Gateway unit that has high speed
mobile internet connectivity.

Meter reading for home energy monitoring, house

automation and energy conservation
The OAMR units can be connected in smaller networks to monitor the utility consumption in one or more
buildings. The data is displayed on one or more home utility displays and can be used to improve the
energy and utility usage in the building as well as monitor usage and costs. The data is available on the
mobile internet to be connected to monitoring systems.

Industrial monitoring and control solutions

The optical meter system can successfully be used in industrial applications where readings are not time
critical. The OAMR reader can be used as an autonomous unit or in a network with other meters and
control units connected to a Mobile 3G/LTE Gateway. The OAMR units unique image classification
functionality and programmability allows the unit to be used in various image monitoring applications
where a low cost, low power optical reader is applicable.
Industrial meter data and other inputs can be collected by OAMR units in connection with other units of
the Northstar product family. The data is stored locally with time stamps, meter information etc. and can
be retrieved on command by connected systems
