THE DETROIT JUDO CLUB

The Detroit Judo Club was formed in 1952 as a direct result of the growing popularity of Judo in the Detroit area. The purpose of this organization is to stimulate interest in the art and sport of Judo and to maintain among its members a
true spieit of amateurism and sportsman-like conduct. The club offers an opportunity for its members to work toward higher rank through competition with fellow
judoist and members of other judo clubs throughout the country.

At the present time, this non-profit club has a membership of some 300 judoist
and is composed of people from all walks of life. The age of this group ranges
from 6 to 65. The Club membership includes 25 women members and 35 junior

The Detroit JudoClub is located at 4444 Joy Road, between Dexter and Grand
River. Facilities
of the club include a one piece 30 X 60 mat area five inches

Kodokan judo was established in 1882 by the late

Dr. Jogoro Kano (186(J..1938). From a small beginning with 9 pupils, the Kodakan has grown to

members with over 200,000 reqratored

Chicago Yudanshakai

Judo was first introduced abroad in 1887. In 1902

the late Mr. Yamashita, one of Dr. Kano's original
students, came to America to teach judo at the request of Pres. Theodore Roosevelt. In the comparatively short span of 75 years, judo has come to
enjoy tremendous popularity in Australia, Argentina, England, France, Italy, Spain, Asia, and to
some degree in practically every country of the
world. This rapid growth in popularity ::an be
directly cttrfbuted to the high principles set for
the sport and administered through regional offices
throughout the world.
Rules governing competition, standards, and ethics
are enforced by the Judo Black Belt Federation of
Amer.ico, through the eleven regional governing
bodies known as Yudanshakais (Black Belt Associations). Each Yudanshakais is charged with the
administration of a designated geographical area
of the United States. The western portion of the
country is governed by five of these associations,
the mid-west states by. the Chicago Yudanshakai,
and the eastern states by the Shufu Judo Yudon, shakai, and the Florida Yudanshakai. The Ko-Nen
Judo Yudanshakai takes in the states of Michigan,
Ohio, Kentucky and Tenn. The two other governing
bodies of the Black Belt Association are SAC Yudanshakai for the Strategic Air Command, and the
Hawaiian Yudanshakai.
Through the system of Black Belt Associations,
~iding the activities of the individual judo organizations,
the hlcrh standards of teaching, competition, and purpose have been perpetuated in the
true spirit of "Kodokan Judo' as originally adopted
by the ["under, Dr. Keno,
