A- The doctors house was a low, square stone house set upon rocks above the narrow beach outlined with bent pines. It
was located a little way away from the sea shore.

joining it to the main island with big clusters of coconut trees.

A- The doctor said that they should treat the injured soldier not as enemy but as an injured man only. He felt that his duty as
a doctor was more important than his patriotism and he also said that as soon as that man was well, they would hand him over
to the Japanese authorities.

The soldiers presence at the doctors home was a danger to both, him and his wife. If the news leaked out they would be

the wound. He took regular care of him until his health was good. Then he gave him instructions on how to regain his former vigour
and vitality. Slowly, he felt a love for the soldier and wanted him to escape the clutches of the Japanese. He told Tom that he would
provide him a boat and enough food and water. He must row to a deserted island where he could wait for a day or two for a Korean
boat. He could then be rescued by the Koreans. He also asked him to signal if he wanted more food. However there was no signal
from him which meant that he had safely escaped.

A- They showed their disagreement by refusing to serve that patient who was a white American. Yumi and all others politely but
effectively expressed their non-cooperation. They made it clear that they were not in favour at all of saving the American. They
expressed their concerns for their security and the reputation of the family. However they still remained loyal to the master and
never disclosed the secret news to anybody. On the seventh day, they decided to quit the job as a gesture of protest but Yumi
returned once to see the child. All the servants returned promptly when the patient was gone.
3. What was the soldiers reaction to doctors hospitality?
The soldier, Tom was extremely grateful to Sadao and his family for saving him. When he reached there he was unconscious and
injured. He just mumbled and muttered a few words. When he regained consciousness, he was surprised that he was taken care of by a
Japanese family. Many times he tried to start conversations with the Doctor and his wife but they did not encourage much conversation.
He thanked them profusely for what they had done for him. Once he got up and walked as far as the garden. When Sadao told him to go
and lie down he showed hesitation because he was not used to taking orders from people. However he expressed his thanks when the
doctor made him escape.

in a dilemma, whether to save him or not. But the able support rendered by his wife and his own dedication to his profession made
the doctor save the soldier. He knew that if the secret was discovered he would be severely punished by the government for
harboring an enemy soldier. But he still stood his ground. There was a time when he told the general about the soldier and the
general promised to send assassins. But when they didnt turn up, the doctor felt very much guilty. He didnt think about the soldier
as an enemy but as another human being. In the end he helped him escape by providing a boat and food. The story proves that
there are no hard feelings among people and it is only created by politicians and governments.
