Nathaniel Franklin Taylor was born March 25, 1824 in Hardin Co., Kentucky. By 1847 Nataniel
Frances Taylor had moved to or near Vevay, Switerland Co., Indiana. On March 26, 1847
Nathanial Frances Taylor (Nathanial Franklin's father) died in Jefferson Co., Indiana, near
Vevay.
Nathaniel Franklin Taylor married Evaline Haskell at Vevay, Switzerland Co., Indiana on Feb
28, 1850. Lucy Ellen Taylor was born to them Feb 4, 1851 at Vevay, Indiana.
In 1852 Nathaniel Franklin and Evaline Haskell Taylor moved to Linn County, Iowa. Here a
son, John Ellis Dye Taylor was born April 21, 1853. In 1854 they moved to Tama Co., Iowa;
where they remained, until after Anna Mariah's death, Nathaniel Franklins second wife. Six
more children were born to Evaline Haskell Taylor, Caroline, Uzillah, Gerorge, Charles, Edgar
and Edwin Thomas Taylor. At the birth of Edgar and Edwin (twins) Evaline died on Nov 29,
1866, the babies survived. Evaline is buried on the hill in the northwest corner of the Taylor
farm where Lucy who had died Sept 1, 1856 and George Elmer who had died Feb 10, 1862;
were buried. This hilltop became a community cemetery over the years.
Nathaniel Franklin Taylor married Anna Maria (Wyatt) Campbell on Jan 21, 1868 at Toledo,
Tama County Iowa. Three sons Walter Llewellyn, Owen, and Arthur were born to them. Anna
Maria died at the birth of their 4th child April 12, 1874, the unnamed infant also died. The
unnamed infant and Anna Marriah were buried in the same grave in the Taylor lot.
In the 1870 Federal Census, Anna Maria Campbell's son from her first marriage to John Thomas
Wyatt - John Wyatt born in 1861 was living with Nathaniel Franklin Taylor. In addition the
children of Evaline Haskell, Nathaniel Franklin's first wife included 5 boys and 3 girls.
The two daughters, Julia and Uzillah Taylor, attended Grinnell College and later taught school.
After the marriage of the two daughter, Julia to William Whitmore Ballard and Uzillah to John
Acton Showen in a double wedding ceremony at Toledo, Tama Co., Iowa, March 19, 1879. The
Nathaniel Franklin Taylor family suffered a severve financial loss in 1879. Having bought hogs
and fed them until ready for market, the price dropped until they were worth nearly nothing.
Nathaniel Franklin with his seven sons (did not include John Wyatt) moved to Woodbury Co.,
Iowa, where he bought some college land. By 1882 Nathaniel Franklin married Elizabeth
(McLaughlin) McSparren. The daughters, Caroline, Julia, and Uzillah Jane; with their husbands
and children, moved to Woodbury Co.,

After the death and shortly before his death the sons worked on farms mostly for their board and
room during the winter months then for wages during the rest of the year. During the year of
1887 the younger brothers lived with the older brother , John E.D. who had bought a farm of
College land in Section 6, Little Sioux Township, Woodbury Co., Iowa known as College
Corners. According to Nellie Taylor Bailey, Nathaniel Franklin's grand daughter and Walter
Llewellyn Taylor's daughter the boys were "put out to strangers" and "no Taylor ever helped
them". Little is known of Anna Maria and John Thomas Wyatts son. In 1920 he was living in
Council Bluff, Iowa and working as a street car conductor.

William Ramsey Line and Mary Campbell were married July 10, 1845 in Carlisle, PA.

History of Story County, Iowa

Cheap and productive farm land attracted early settlers to the present area of Story County
around 1846. In 1853 the county was formed and named after the Supreme Court Justice Joseph
Story. Story County grew slower than surrounding areas and counties. This was due to the large
numbers of lowlands, marshes, ponds and slough areas. These greatly hindered the development
of large tracts of farmland and transportation, such as roads and the railroad. For example, early
roads were sometimes nothing more than furrows created by sod-breaking teams. They were
often muddy and concealed by high grasses, often making travel an adventure.

This is why the railroads played such a big part in the early development of Story County. With
more than 6,700 acres of land donated to it by the county, the Cedar Rapids and Missouri River
Railroad began construction in 1863. By 1864 it had passed through Nevada, reached Ames and
had become the furthest western railway terminus in the United States. In the 1870s a North-
South route was added to the county by the Des Moines and Minnesota Railroads, later named
the Northwestern. It reached Ames in 1874 and Story City in 1877. This rail line gave birth to the
towns of Gilbert, Kelly, and Sheldahl. By the end of the 1880s and the addition of two more east-
west rail lines, every farmer was within six miles of markets and shipping accommodations.

The first courthouse was built in Nevada in 1856, costing around $1,500. It was a two-story
frame building. Ames was also an early contender for the county seat but in June of 1859 the
Iowa Agricultural College and Farm were located there, thus making Nevada's claim to the honor
more secure. The first courthouse caught fire and burned on December 31, 1863.

A second similar courthouse was built in its place. The building of a third courthouse was
proposed in 1857. Designed by William Foster and constructed of locally made bricks the
finished cost was $50,000. It is told that the contractor, J. B. Randall, went bankrupt because of
the fine materials, rising cost of labor, and the careful craftsmanship that went into building the
structure. Finished in 1877, the three-story building was situated on the town square. In the
building was a tower in which school children could climb to see a panoramic view of the
landscape. It was later torn down due to safety reasons.
An old Civil War cannon is present on the front lawn of the current Story County courthouse.
The Story County cannon has been there since 1901. The cannon, the first built by A. B. Reading
and Bro., Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1861, reached Story via the Rock Island Arsenal on January
29, 1901. It was shipped to Jason D. Ferguson G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic). By 1911
the G.A.R. was not too active, and it is speculated that the cannon was donated to the county
before the G.A.R. expired.

The Line Family (Anna Mariah Campbell Family) in Story County

The Line family moved to Nevada, Story Co., Iowa in 1851, when Anna Mariah was 15 years
old. Anna Mariah had inherited $2,250 from her biological father. In the 1860 Federal Census of
Story Co. She is recorded as having $2,000 in real estate and $250 in personal property. She
may have married John Campbell in 1855, however no record has been located of a marriage and
it is unlikely that there was a marriage. In fact it was known in the Taylor family that there had
been children born in the mid 1800s in an unmarried relationship. In the 1856 Iowa Census
Anna Mariah Campbell was living with John Campbell. In the 1856 census of Iowa. He is listed
as a land owner, a member of the militia, and a farmer. Interestingly the census also reports that
Anna Mariah and John Campbell are married, no record has been found of a marriage. Anna
Mariah was probably pregnant with Mary J Campbell at the time of this census. In 1856 Anna
Mariah Campbell gave birth to a daughter, Mary J. Campbell. She had a son, Frank Andrew
Campbell on Oct 1, 1858. Both children were born in Nevada, Story Co., Iowa. There may or
may not have been a divorce in 1859, no record has been located. They separated in 1859. Anna
Mariah Campbell married John Thomas Wyatt on Aug 4, 1859. From the Story County
Marriage Register Volume 1, page 6: the marriage was solemnized on Aug 4, 1859 by G.A.
Kellogg, county judge, license returned Aug 8, 1859. John Thomas Wyatt was born Oct 19,
1840 in Bartholamew, Indiana. He died July 26, 1919 in Marshalltown, Iowa at the Iowa
Soldiers Home. They had a son, John Wyatt, born in 1861 in Nevada, Story Co., Iowa. Anna
Mariah and John Thomas Wyatt separated, in 1862. John Thomas Wyatt enlisted in the US
Army on Aug 22, 1862 and served in the Civil War.. He entered Regiment D of the 40th Iowa
Infantry on Sept 13, 1862. He was discharged from the Army on Feb 8, 1864 at Madison,
Wisconsin with a disability discharge. John Thomas Wyatt is buried in the Iowa Soldiers Home
Cemetery at Marshalltown, Iowa. In the 1860 Federal Census John Thomas Wyatt and Anna
Mariah Campbell Wyatt and Anna's and John Campbell's children and John Thomas Wyatt were
married were listed as living in Nevada, Iowa. Interestingly Jacob G. Miller and his wife,
Elenore Miller were also listed (the next family to be counted on that record). This was the
second marriage for both Jacob G Miller and Eleanore Miller. There were 3 Miller children
living in that family and they were Jacob G. Miller's children from a previous marriage.
Eleanore Miller (Jacob Miller's wife) was born in Penn. as were all of the Miller Children. This
family may have been related to Anna Mariah but no record has been found indicating that
relationship. In the 1870 Federal Census of the Richland Township, Chelsea, Tama Co., IA;
Anna Mariah (Wyatt) Campbell’s children Mary J Campbell age 14 and Frank Andrew
Campbell age 12 were living with Jacob G. Miller and his wife Ellenore Miller. Also listed in
this census is the value of real estate owned and personal property owned. Jacob G. Miller is
listed with $2400 in real estate and $750 in personal property. The majority of what he had in
1870 is the same real property inherited by Anna Mariah Campbell at the death of her father in
PA. Apparently it was transferred to Jacob G. Miller or to Elenore Miller, in return for caring for
Anna Mariah’s children, or it may have been a condition of the inheritance.
Anna Mariah Campbell Wyatt moved to Helena, Tama Co., Iowa in 1866 and she and Nathanial
Franklin Taylor were married Jan 21, 1868. They were married by Newton B. Hiate, a Justice of
the Peace in Tama Co. Iowa. They had 3 sons Walter Llewelyn Taylor born Apr 3, 1869, Owen
Taylor born Nov 23, 1870 and Arthur Taylor born May 23, 1872. All 3 sons were born in
Helena, Tama Co., IA. A 4th child died at birth on April 12, 1874. Anna Mariah died with the
child. The unnamed infant and Anna Mariah were buried in the same grave on a hill, which
would later become the community cemetery for Helena, Tama Co., IA.
After the death of Nathaniel Franklin on May 3, 1883 in Correctionville, IA., the sons worked
on farms mostly for their board and room during the winter months, then for wages during the
rest of the year. During the year of 1887 the younger brothers lived with the older brother , John
E.D. Taylor who had bought a farm of College land in Section 6, Little Sioux Township,
Woodbury Co., Iowa known as College Corners. John E.D Taylor was the son of Eveline
Haskell, Nathaniel Franklin's first wife.
Anna Mariah’s son Frank Andrew Campbell married Anna Keup in 1889 in Tama Co., Iowa.
Anna Keup was born March 21, 1869 and died on Jan 12, 1961; in Tama Co., Iowa. They had 3
children. John Campbell born in Oct. 1890, Walter Arthur Campbell born Oct 2, 1892, and
Anna M Campbell was born June 1896.
Frank Andrew Campbell’s son Walter Arthur Campbell was born Oct 2, 1892 in Tama Co. Iowa
and died Feb 21, 1986 in Tama Co., Iowa. at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. He
had resided at the Sunny Hill Care Center, Tama since December 1985. He was the son of Frank
Andrew Campbell and grandson of Anna Maria (Wyatt)(Campbell) Taylor. Walter Arthur
Campbell lived with his family near Limon, Colorado from 1908 until 1914. They returned to
Tama in 1914, because of severe weather and grasshoppers eating their crops. They moved to
1508 Grant St at Tama, Iowa. On July 31, 1926. He married Mary Prochaska in Tama. They
had 2 children. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary, who died in 1981, a
brother John, and a sister, Mrs. William (Annie) Duggan, and a grandson.
Relatives still living at his death include a daughter, Mrs. Louis (Helen) Kracer, Tama, IA, a son
Ralph Campbell of Tacoma, Washington. Jim Kacer, Cedar Rapids, IA, Mrs. Paul (Kathryn)
Perry, Mrs. Rich (Laurie) Wolfer and Mrs. Thomas (Janet) Slows, all of Tacoma, Wash. He also
had four grandsons.
Frank Andrew Campbells son John Campbell born in Oct 1890 died before his brother Walter
Arthur Campbell, noted from Walter Arthur's obituary. Therefore it is known he died before Feb
1986. No record of a marriage has been found nor has any other record been located
Anna Mariah Campbells daughter, Mary J Campbell born in 1856, at age 14 was living with
Jacob G. Miller and his wife Ellenore Miller. Little is known of her after 1870. She never
married, she lived out her life in Tama Co. IA., and died in 1896 of unknown causes.
Anna Mariah Campbells son, John Wyatt, was born in 1861 in Nevada, Story Co., Iowa. In 1866
he moved to Tama Co., Iowa with his mother, where his mother married Nathanial Franklin
Taylor. In the 1870 Federal Census of Richland, Tama Co., Iowa; John Wyatt was living with
the Nathanial Franklin Taylor and Anna Maria (Wyatt) Campbell Taylor household. On Apr 12,
1874 Anna Maria (Wyatt) Campbell Taylor died in childbirth. She was buried on the family
farm, which later became the community cemetery for Helena. Later Nathaniel Franklin moved
with his seven sons to Woodbury Co. Iowa. These 7 boys included 4 of Elavaline Haskell's sons,
one of Elavaline's sons, George Elmer, had died on Feb 10, 1862. The seven included Anna
Mariah's 3 sons. This did not include John Wyatt. John Wyatt may have been taken in by Jacob
G. Miller and his wife Elenor, but no record has been found documenting this. After the death of
Nathaniel Franklin the sons worked on farms mostly for their board and room during the winter
months then for wages during the rest of the year. During the year of 1887 the younger brothers
lived with the older brother , John E.D. Taylor who had bought a farm of College land in
Section 6, Little Sioux Township, Woodbury Co., Iowa known as College Corners. According
to Nellie Taylor Bailey, Nathaniel Franklin's grand daughter and Walter Llewellyn Taylor's
daughter the boys were "put out to strangers" and "no Taylor ever helped them". Nellie Taylor
Bailey was told this by her father Walter Llewelyn Taylor. The source of information on children
born to an unmarried relationship also came from Nellie Bailey Taylor. Little is known of Anna
Mariah and John Thomas Wyatt s son - John Wyatt. John Wyatt, except that he married
Caroline Reese. She was born Oct 16, 1859 and died Oct 8, 1935 in Sidney, Iowa In the 1920
Federal Census he was living in Council Bluff, Iowa and working as a street car conductor.
Nathaniel Franklin died May 03, 1883 at Correctionville, Woodbury Co., Iowa and is buried at
the Good Hope Cemetery north of Correctionville.

Notes for WALTER LLEWELLYN TAYLOR:

Walter Llewellyn Taylor was born April 3, 1869 in Helena, Tama County, Iowa. He was the son
of Nathaniel Franklin Taylor and Anna Marriah (Wyatt) Campbell Taylor. Walter always said
he was the oldest of three boys when his mother died in childbirth. He had two "full" brothers
Owen and Arthur. There was another family of children belonging to his mother from an earlier
marriage. There were also children before Anna Mariah was married. He did not know what
happened to his mother first families. Also he did not know where Nathaniel Franklin and
Evaline Haskell first family was. Please note the information on Anna Maria (Wyatt) Campbell.
Walter Llewellyn was "put out to strangers before his father died and worked for his keep. No
Taylor ever helped him. He managed to grow up. He spoke often of the hardship he experience
as a child. One July 4th he was living on a farm near Smithland, Iowa , he made himself a pair
of pants out of a gunny sack and walked barefooted into town for the celebration. (Source for
this information Nellie Taylor Bailey) In the June 1, 1880 Federal Census of Columbia, Tama
Co. Iowa Walter Llewellyn Taylor is counted as living in the John and Mary Cory household.
He is not listed as a relative of the family, rather he is listed as a laborer. He was working for his
board and room with this household. At the time he was 11 years old. This was over 2 years
before his fathers death. In that same census Walter Llewelly's brother Owen was living with
his half sister, Caroline J. Taylor Ballard and her husband William Ballard in Columbia
Township, Tama Co. Iowa. Walter's other brother Arthur was living with his half sister Uzillah J.
Taylor Showden, also in Tama, Tama Co., Iowa. In 1885 Arthur was still living with the
Showden's but he was in Woodbury Co., Iowa. Arthur later moved with the Snowden family to
Oklahoma.
During the year 1887 the younger brothers lived with the older brothers, John E.D., who had
bought a farm of College Land in Section 6, Little Sioux Township, Woodbury County, Iowa,
known as College Corners. This farm was sold and they moved to another farm two miles south
in the Lum Hollow districts. John E.D. Taylor left for Kansas soon after leaving the Lum
Hollow community and landed in Larned, Kansas where he met and married Emma Anna
Johnson, September 28, 1890.
At the time of his marriage, Walter Llewellyn Taylor had purchased an improved 160 acres of
railroad land near Pierson, Iowa. On March 24, 1892 he married Mary O'Connell at Onawa,
Iowa. Mary O’Connell was a school teacher near Pierson Iowa. They made their home on a farm
one and a half miles southwest of Pierson where they remained for 12 years. A friend and
ordained Baptist minister S.M. Stevens, who had settled in eastern Gregory County, SD told
them about the frontier land in Gregory County. Gregory County, is located in the south central
part of South Dakota. It is named for C. H. Gregory, an officer in the U.S. Army stationed at Ft.
Randall. A rivalry for county seat honors sprang up between Fairfax and Bonesteel, which for
several years was the source of considerable controversy. In 1898, the county was organized by
order of Governor Lee. Fairfax received a majority of votes in an August 1898 election and was
declared the county seat. As early as 1906 an effort was made to move the county seat farther
west, but efforts failed. In 1916 the matter was again brought up and after one of the bitterest
fights in the county's history the seat was moved to Burke.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,053 square miles (2,728
km²), of which, 1,016 square miles (2,631 km²) of it is land and 38 square miles (97 km²) of it
(3.56%) is water.
President Benjamin Harrison issued a proclamation on Feb. 10,1890, declaring one-fourth of
eastern portion of Gregory County open to entry settlers. In 1898, the Gregory County
government was organized. The remaining portion of Gregory County was opened to
homesteaders by President Theodore Roosevelt on April 23, 1904. The land office for the
opening was at Bonesteel. Chaotic conditions at Bonesteel prior to the opening and the threat of
trouble on the opening day caused Lt. Gov. Snow to mobilize National Guard troops from Sioux
Falls to protect the land office and keep order during the opening. The actual opening proved to
be uneventful.
Walter Llewellyn Taylor and Mary O'Connell Taylor sold their land in Iowa in 1903. In
February 1904 they moved to Bonesteel. They traveled by train, Mrs. Taylor and the children in
the passenger area, Walter traveled in the caboose or freight car with his livestock and
machinery. They purchased a half section of land (320 acres) from Dr. Louis Boutillier, DVM
(Butler) who had sqatted on the East 1/2 of the West 1/2 of section 32, Schriever Township, in
the military reserve and later filed on it. He had a blacksmith shop on the place. He sold the
land and house to Walter Taylor and moved with his blacksmith shop into Bonesteel. The shop
was moved to Lots 13 & 14 west of the saloon in Bonesteel. Dr. Louis Boutillier, in addition to
being a man of medicine he was a veterianian and a blacksmith, and also had knowleged of
treatment of humans. He concocted a salve or ointment used by him to cure cancer. Louis
Boutlillier was a Frenchman; his name was americanized to Butler.
There was a five room house on the land, Walter built a barn and several other smaller buildings.
All of Walter and Mary's children graduated from Bonesteel High School.
The family lived very close to Bonesteel, where they engaged in farming and raising Purebred
Shorthorn cattle. The farm was about a mile west of Bonesteel. He took pride in his work and
was a regular exhibitor in the Gregory Co. fair winning 9 cups and many ribbons for outstanding
livestock. His sons Paul and Walter were associated with their father in the farming/cattle
raising operation.
Walter retired from the farm and in January 1926 and moved into Bonesteel. He enjoyed tree
and vegetable gardening . He was a member of the city council when the City Hall was built in
1933 and 1934. He served on the Bonesteel school board; he was the first clerk of Pleasant
Valley Township and he was a director of the Gregory County Fair Board.
After his retirement his sons Paul Lester with the help of Walter Justin took over the farm and
cattle operation. His oldest daugther, Edna Taylor Vondrack moved to Hinton, Woodbury Co.,
Iowa in 1918; his son Raymond moved to Rapid City, So. Dak. in 1931, Ray served for 2 1/2
years in the US Navy during World War I; his son Paul Lester stayed in Bonesteel, where he and
his brother Walter Justin operated the family homestead; his daughter Nellie Taylor Bailey
stayed in Bonesteel and lived on a ranch north of Bonesteel after living in Fremont, Nebraska for
a few years, sometime between 1920 and 1928, she taught school while in Fremont; his son
Walter Justin never married and stayed in Bonesteel, SD, he served in the U.S. Army in both
World Wars., and his son Bruce Taylor moved to Nebraska, first to Linsay in 1947, then to
Hartington, Nebraska in 1948.
Walter Llewellyn Taylor died Jan 6, 1947. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning Jan
8, 1947 at 9 o'clock at the Catholic church in Bonesteel and were conducted by Father E.J.
McGonigal. Burial was at St. Mary's Catholic cemetery. Pall bearers were: Martin Grady,
Ambrose Burke, Theo Sondgeroth, J.M. McNamara, J. R. Jones, and Jim Metal.
Also buried in St. Mary's Cemetery are his wife Mary O'Connell Taylor in 1952, his daughter
Nellie Taylor Bailey and her husband Elslie Hull Bailey, two of Walter Llewellyn's sons, Walter
Justin and Paul Lester and Paul's wife Nora Mary Sondgeroth Taylor. Edgar Bailey, a grandson
and a great granson William A. (Bill) Bailey) are also buried there.
Twenty three children were born to the children of Walter Llewelly Taylor and Mary O'Connell
Taylor, and many great grandchildren.

Notes for NELLIE M TAYLOR:

Nellie Taylor was known as Nellie by nearly everyone her entire life. However following her
death it was learned by her daughter Alice Bailey Humpal that her real name was Mary Ellen
Taylor. It isn't known why she changed her name to Nellie. I did find a copy of the 1920 Federal
Census (on-line) and the entire family was listed. At that time Nellie was 22 years old and still
living with her parents, even at that age she was listed in the census as Nellie, so her parents
must have either given her a nick name or something like that. Nellie's grandparents (William
O'Connell and Elizabeth Sullivan) had a daughter named Ellen and called Nellie, there may or
may not been a connection.
She was born Dec. 22, 1897 in Pierson, Woodbury Co., IA. She graduated from the Bonesteel
Public School in 1915. Nellie taught school for a number of years and also lived for a few years
in Fremont, Nebraska before she married Eslie Hull Bailey on Dec 15, 1928 in Bonesteel,
Gregory Co., SD. It is unknown the exact dates she lived in Fremont, Nebraska, however in Feb
1920 she was living with her parents at Bonesteel (1920 Census) and she married Eslie in
December of 1928. After her marriage she lived on a ranch a few five miles North of Bonesteel,
SD. My father Bruce Richard Taylor worked for Eslie for awhile, I'm not sure how long, I
believe it was for less than a year. He was very impressed with Eslie, Dad said he was an
extremely hard worker. I remember the Bailey ranch and I especially remember the barn. I was
a really little child but the barn was wonderful. There were "giant horses" in there. I remember
going horse back riding at the Bailey ranch.
Nellie and Eslie had 4 children. Alice (Bailey) Humpal b.Oct 19, 1929; Edgar Bailey b. Aug 9,
1931; Irma Bailey b. Aug 29, 1933; Thomas Bailey b June 4, 1935; and James Bailey b. Aug 25,
1938.

Nellie Taylor Bailey died Nov 21, 1991 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Burke, SD.
Funeral services were held Nov. 23, 1991 at Immaculate Conseption Church in Bonesteel, by
Father Bryan Sorenson. Pallbearers were grandsons Steve Bailey, Lonny Fuhrer, Rod
Thompson, Bill Bailey, Mick Humpal, and Jay Schmitz. Honorary Pallbearers were grandsons
Jerry Schmitz, George Dooley, Tim Carmichael, John McConnel, Tim Bailey, Scott Humpall,
Randy Humpall, and Jerry Connot. She is buried in St Mary Cemetery in Bonesteel, SD beside
her husband Elsie Hull Bailey. Edgar Bailey is also buried in St. Mary's Cemetery and Irma is
buried in Naper, NE.

Notes for ESLIE HULL BAILEY:

ESLI HULL BAILEY FAMILY

James Vincent Bailey was born in England in 1848. He immigrated to Ontario, Canada, when he
was about 12 as a woodsman. He married Mary Hull from Wales. They lived in Iowa briefly
and then moved to Jerauld County, S. Dak. Near Crow Lake where they farmed and raised one
crop in five years. The ground was very rocky. His close neighbors were August Kappelman
and the Fricks. He lived here when the blizzard of January 12, 1888 struck. The day had started
warm and calm. The snow had begun to melt. The stock had gone to the creek to drink. The
wind turned to the northwest and the temperature started to drop. The storm hit to fast the stock
never returned. Children were caught in school. They tied ropes around their waists to cross a
road 100 feet away to the Kapplemann house. They were lucky and made it, but many teachers
and pupils lost their lives.

In the fall of 1891, they homesteaded in Gregory County in order to be near the Kappelman’s.
They thought it was truly a land of plenty with blue grass as tall as a horse’s back. They found
trees and wild fruit in abundance. Fencing was easy because of the many trees. These could also
be used to make corrals and sheds. They had brought their one room house 16 ft. by 18ft. on a
flat boat. The man that ran the boat was Benny Reynolds. The biggest task was getting the
house up the river hill. The first thing they did was dig a rock well. It was hard water but plenty
of it. It was a task to wash clothes in it. The water was drawn by a windlass and a bucket and
rope. We worked the land with oxen and horses. The land had been military land that had not
been surveyed.

Trading could be done then at the Gaughen Store about two miles away. There was a little store
also on the north side of Wheeler, which was the county seat. Travel was done by buggy and
team or saddle horses. The main crops were wheat and corn. They also raised garden products.
For years Dad took wheat to Atkinson to have it ground. Two of the older children were sent
there several months of each year to school. He told of camping out when he would take them
and of the fleas that would come from the sand and bit them.

Many of the wagon trails of the early settlers can still be seen today north of Bonesteel.
Especially the one from Fairfax to the Missouri and the ferry boat. The Indians, military, and
cattlemen all used this trail.

The first school was built in 1903, one and one-half miles west of the homestead. On the board
were Fritz, Handt, George Sazalt, and Benjamin Solomon. Other neighbors were Gingery,
Lazotte, Stafford, Dietricks and Maggrett. There was little time for hobbies, but they did enjoy
playing checkers and riding horseback.

Doctors were few. Ernest, the oldest son, went for a doctor when I was born. He was in a storm
ten miles from Atkinson and almost lost his life. A neighbor’s wife had come in as they helped
each other.

The children were Ernest, Ethel, dec. infant, Edith, Earl, Eben, Elvin, Erwin and Esli. In 1910
the family moved 1½ miles west of the original homestead. The house that was built is where I

23. BRUCE RICHARD10 TAYLOR (WALTER LLEWELLYN9, NATHANIEL FRANKLIN8, NATHANIEL

FRANCIS7, NATHANIEL6, GEORGE5, NATHANIEL4, ANDREW3, ROBERT2, THOMAS1)131,132 was
born Jul 10, 1905 in Bonesteel, Gregory Co., SD132,133, and died Feb 21, 1975 in Sioux City,
Woodbury Co., IA. He married GLADYS MARY DARCY134,135,136,137,137,138 Mar 31, 1933 in
Bonesteel, Gregory Co, SD139, daughter of MICHAEL DARCY and JENNIE BULGER. She was
born Oct 01, 1910 in Stephen, Marshall Co, MN140,141,142,143,144,145, and died Dec 03, 1976 in
Hartington, Cedar Co., NE146.

Notes for BRUCE RICHARD TAYLOR:

Bruce Taylor was born July 5, 1905 in Bonesteel, Gregory Co., SD. When he sent for his birth
certificate, for social security reasons, he discovered his birth certificate number for Gregory
County S.D was number 5 (five). He was proud of that fact. He graduated from Bonesteel
Public School in 1924. In 1928 he attended Barbers School in Sioux City, IA. He barbered in
Bonesteel, SD and also Wood, SD. Originally a farmer. . He started barbering in Wood, SD in
1929. He farmed and barbered for a few years, He also worked for the County and State Road
Departments for a couple of years. He used his own horses and both he and the horses worked.
According to my mother, my father really didn't like horses. He wouldn't admit that but you
could tell he didnt really think very fondly of them. He told of the time he was working for the
Road Dept. in South Dakota, using his own horses. He had a really bad morning, one of his
horses was being really ornery and mean and acting up and fighting the entire morning. When
he came into camp for noon, he announced to the other workers that he would trade that horse
for any other horse in the whole place, no questioned asked.
Another guy took him up on it. He said the horse he got was the most useless animal he ever
owned, but at least it wasn't mean and didn't fight all the time. He had many horse stories that he
loved to tell,
In 1934 he was severely burned in a fire at his barber shop in Bonesteel, SD. He was burned over
about 90% of his body, and nearly died. He was lighting the fire in a coal burning stove in the
barber shop. He put in coal over the ashes from the previous day. Using what he thought was
kerosene to strart the coal. Anyway he put the kerosene on the coal, there must have been a hot
coal in the ashes and the kerosene exploded, burning the barber shop. He spent about 6 months
in the Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD. He was unable to work for about a year. He told of
the adhesions in both of his hands. Because of the way his hands healed, he was unable to open
or close both hands very well. When my brother Gordon was a little over a year old, my father
was home and laying on the floor, playing with Gordon. Gordon stepped on dads left hand,
breaking many of the adhesions - my father said it was very painful, but as a result his left hand
healed much better than his right hand. He was unable to properly open and close his right hand
for the rest of his life. He learned to hold a straight edge razor with his right hand, and it did not
interfere with his work. During the time he couldn't work my mother worked as a seamstress to
help support the family.
He barbered and farmed part time in Bonesteel until 1947, when he moved to Lindsay, Platte
Co., Nebraska. He was a barber
in Lindsay, NE. for about a year. He moved to Hartington in 1948. He barbered there until
1959. He started barbering in Coleridge, NE on Jan 12, 1959, and worked there until he retired
in 1971. His first job as a barber was in Wood, SD. While in Wood the price of a haircut was
$0.15 and a shave was $0.10 ( "A shave and a haircut two bits"). Playing checkers in barber
shops was fairly common at that time. He was a very good checker player. I remember him and
grandma Taylor (his mother, my grandmother) playing checkers, They both used to claim that
the other one cheated, and they probably did. He loved to play checkers. So do I, he taught me to
play the game. I think I could beat him if we could play now.
He married Gladys Mary Darcy May 31, 1933 in Bonesteel, Gregory Co., SD. Bruce and
Gladys had five children. Gordon Norbert, Lois Ann, Marvin Mark and twins Kenneth & Keith.
He enjoyed baseball, and was a big Minnesota Twins fan, after the baseball team moved to
Minneapolis from Washington, DC.(Washington Senators later the Minnesota Twins). He liked
all sports. I don't think he missed a high school sports or school activity event while his children
were in school. He enjoyed gardening and working in the yard. He raised and sold lots of
tomatoes to stores in Hartington. He also had a very large strawberry patch.
He developed cancer in 1973 and died of the disease on Feb 22, 1975 at St. Joseph Hospital in
Sioux City, IA. Funeral Services were held at Holy Trinity Church in Hartington, Ne.
Pallbearers were Jim Hayes, Wayne Fish, George Foulk, Edgar Bruning, Mike Olson, and James
McGowen. He was buried at St. Michael Cemetery in Hartington, NE. on Feb 25, 1975, with his
wife Gladys Mary Darcy Taylor and two two sons, Kenneth Jerome and Gordon Norbert.
Marvin Mark is buried in Randolph, Cedar Co., NE; St Frances Cemetery and Lois Ann in

Gladys Darcy was born Oct 1, 1910 in Stephen, Minn. I remember her saying she was born along
the Red River in Minn. and that river flowed in two different directions (had two different
channels) in the area. They moved to Creighton, NE in about 1920 and lived there for about a
year, Michael Joseph worked for his brother Thomas Patrick to repay him for the help Thomas
Patrick had given him when he came to the USA, in 1902. They moved to Bonesteel, Gregory
Co., SD before 1925. After graduation from High School in Bonesteel, SD in 1928, she attended
Springfield "Normal School" She taught school in Volin, SD., Tyndall, SD, and several other
rural schools. During the 1930 Federal Census Gladys Darcy was teaching school in Bon
Homme Co. South Dakota and staying (board and room) with Frank and Mable Weston and their
5 children near Tyndall, SD. On March 31, 1933 she married Bruce Richard Taylor in
Bonesteel, SD. They had five children. All of their children were born in Bonesteel, SD.

In the 1949 - 1950 school year, she taught at the Mennonite School near Tyndall, SD. She
stayed in the community provided housing and ate at the community dining room. I remember
going with the rest of the family to see her during that year. This was the last school where she
taught. Between 1950 and 1957 she did not work outside the home. She owrked for a number of
years at The State Hospital ( a State run mental health facility), as a nurse's aide. While she
worked at the State Hospital in 1958 she stayed with her mother over the winter, in Yankton, SD,
to save driving back and forth from Hartington.

On Nov 28, 1961 she started to work at Skyline Restaurant, until Sept 10, 1962 ( where she
was a baker and cook) She made really good pie and pie crust. She worked for Gurney Seed
and Nursery Co. in Yankton, SD beginning on March 6, 1963, where she operated the company
food service operation. She begin working in Hartington at the Cedars Nursing Home in the fall
of 1969. She worked there until her death on December 3, 1976. For the last year she did not
work full time, usually 8 to 16 hours per week. She enjoyed gardening and yard work. She also
enjoyed cooking and canning food. She was a very good seamstress. She made Kenneth and
Keith's suits for their first communion, and when they graduated form the 8th grade. She loved
making children clothes, Lois Ann Taylor Thoreson had 3 girls and she enjoyed making "lots"
of clothes for them. She was very talented at this and could look at clothing and make her own
patterns to make the clothing. She made the patterns from old newspapers. She told me that she
had taken a class at Springfield, SD teachers college to learn to do this. She also made patch
work quilts. During 1934 and 1935 she work in a sewing plant in Bonesteel, as a seamstress.
She died very unexpectedly on Dec 3, 1976, as a result of a heart attack, at her home in

Notes for KENNETH JEROME TAYLOR:

Kenneth Taylor and his twin brother Keith were born Sept 28, 1942 in Bonesteel, SD. An interesting story about
how we were named was told to me by my mother. She said the doctor had delivered 4 previous sets of boy
twins, and all were named Keith and Kenneth, he persuaded mom to name us the same. Also my mother told us
that Keith was born first. At that time they did not know mom was having twins and were a little surprised that
she continued labor after Keith's birth. Forty five minutes later Kenneth was born. My sister Lois was 8 years
old when we were born. In her mind she had two brothers and when mom had the baby, which she was sure was
a girl, there would be 2 boys and 2 girls in the family. She wasn't very happy when mom came up with 2 more
boys. We were baptized Oct. 11, 1942 by Father McGonigal, Kenny's godparents were Katherine Velder and
Clarence Schmitz.
In 1947 we moved to Lindsey, Ne. The family lived there about a year and moved to Hartington, NE in 1948.
In 1952 Keith, Kenneth and sister Lois had Polio. That year there was an a lot of polio in Nebraska. Kenneth and
Keith were in St. Josephs Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa. Lois was in St. Josephs hospital also but she was also in
Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD. They attended Holy Trinity Grade School and High School and
graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1961. Kenneth and Keith had a variety of jobs while in High
School, they worked on farms, home delivered groceries, worked on construction, worked at a drive-in theatre,
operating the movie projectors and did other lawn service type jobs. On Sept 21, 1961 Kenneth started working
for Bob Yost at the Coleridge Blade, in Coleridge, Ne. On Nov 27, 1961 he started to work in Yankton, SD at
Skyline Restrauant.
Kenneth attended college in Minneapolis, Minn. with a major in Medical Technology/X-Ray Technology. While
attending college Kenneth stayed with his sister Lois Thoreson and her family. He worked a a Pizza place near
the Minnesota Twin Baseball stadium. After college Kenneth worked for the Public Health Service (Indian
Health Service) in Wagner, SD from Oct 16, 1963 until his death on Sept 3, 1966. He worked 2 years, 10
months, and 13 days at Wagner. He was a Medical Technician and X-Ray Technician.

Kenneth was killed in a car accident between Wagner, SD. and Lake Andes, SD. He died at 12:15 AM on Sept 3,
1966. His funeral services were held Sept 6, 1966 at Holy Trinity Church, Hartington, Ne., Rev. Cyril Werner.

Kenneth never married. He was buried in Hartington, NE at St. Michaels Cemetery on Sept 6, 1966 with his
parents and brother Gordon. At his death he had three brothers, all living, Gordon and twin brother Keith of
Hartington, Marvin Taylor and sister in-law Gaylene Taylor of Randolph, his sister Lois Thoreson and brother

47. KEITH VINCENT11 TAYLOR (BRUCE RICHARD10, WALTER LLEWELLYN9, NATHANIEL

FRANKLIN8, NATHANIEL FRANCIS7, NATHANIEL6, GEORGE5, NATHANIEL4, ANDREW3,
ROBERT2, THOMAS1)215 was born Sep 28, 1942 in Bonesteel, Gregory Co., SD215. He married
KATHLEEN ROSE RUFFING215 Apr 16, 1979 in Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., MN, daughter of
ROBERT RUFFING and HELEN RADISH. She was born Apr 18, 1947 in Greenville, Mercer Co.,
PA215.

Notes for KEITH VINCENT TAYLOR:

Keith Taylor and his twin brother Kenneth were born Sept 28, 1942 in Bonesteel, SD. An
interesting story about how they were named was told to me by mother. She said the doctor had
delivered 4 previous sets of boy twins, and all were named Keith and Kenneth, he persuaded
mom to name us the same. Also my mother told us that Keith was born first. At that time they
did not know mom was having twins and were a little surprised that she continued her labor after
the first birth. Forty five minutes later Kenneth was born. My grandma Darcy was with my
mother when we were born. Kenny and I were not born in a hospital, in fact none of my brothers
and sister were born in a hospital. Kenneth and Keith were born at house about a mile west of
Bonesteel. We were baptized Oct. 11, 1942 by Father McGonigal, my godparents were
.
My memory of living in Bonesteel is faint. I remember that we had an auction sale when we
moved from the farm in Bonesteel. I was really upset when our baby beds were sold. I also
remember we had a dog which had puppies and we carried the puppies around, alot. The
puppies had been born under the front porch and we used to crawl under there to play with the
puppies. I was 4 or 5 years old and Kenny and I wore bib overalls and no shirt most of the time.
We used to put the puppies under the bib of our bib overalls and carry them around. I also
remember that during the auction sale my father sent my brother Gordon out to the pasture to
bring in a horse, which was to be sold. I remember I wanted to go get it but they said I was too
little, and I was mad.
In 1947 we moved to Lindsay, Platte Co., Ne. I don't remember much about moving to Lindsay
but I do remember riding on a train with my mother and my brothers Marvin and Kenneth; and
my sister Lois. Gordon went with my father and they either drove a truck or rode in the truck. It
was while living on a farm near Linsday that my brother Gordon hit me in the head with a
baseball bat ( it was an accident, he wasn't trying to kill me) Dad was in Hartington at work
about 85 miles away, mom didnt have a car. She carried me for what seemed to be a real long
way to a neighbors farm, and then took me to the doctor. We lived in Lindsay for a short time
and then moved to Hartington, NE in 1948. In 1952 Keith, Kenneth and my sister Lois had
polio. That year there was an a lot of polio in that area. We were in St. Josephs Hospital in
Sioux City, Iowa. Lois was in St. Josephs hospital also but she was also in Sacred Heart Hospital
in Yankton, SD. My brother Gordon used to pick on me. One day while we were eating dinner
Gordy did something to me, so I stabbed him with a fork in the side. I remember that he was
really mad at me and that he did bleed. I'm pretty sure I got into a lot of trouble for that. But, I
guess I got even for him hitting me in the head with the bat. A couple of other interesting things I
rembember that on Nov 23, 1950, we were living in an apartment over what was to be Ed's
Cafe, but at the time was a farm implement dealer (It had Furguson Tractors) that the Holy
Trinity Catholic Church burned. My father went up to the fire and helped the firemen. My twin
brother Kenny and I wanted to go along but we weren't allowed to go. I remember looking out
the upstairs window and being able to see the sky light up from the fire. We had a back area
that overlooked a parking lot behind our apartment. Anyway one day I had hickups and Gordy
grabbed me and held me by my ankles upside down over the rail on the back area. I scared me
alot, but when it was over I didn't have the hickups anymore. I also remember that we had a dog,
one of the puppies from Bonestell, SD. He was really a nice dog, and his name was Fatso. I'm
not real sure of this but I think he might have been kind of mean to other people and may have
bitten someone, but I'm no too clear about that. He didnt like fireworks and firecrackers. One
July 4th he was outside when somebody shot off some fireworks, he got really scared and tore a
hole in the screen door and got into the house.
Keith and Kenneth had a variety of jobs while in High School, we worked on farms, home
delivered groceries, worked on construction, worked at a drive-in theatre - operating the movie
projectors, we also did other lawn service type jobs. We attended Holy Trinity Grade School
and High School and graduated from Holy Trinity in 1961. Keith attended Wayne State College,
Wayne, Nebraska from 1961 to 1962. I worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads from
April 24, 1962 until Dec. 30, 1966. In 1967 I returned to Wayne State and graduated in
September, 1969. Following graduation from Wayne State I taught school at Fairfax Public
School in Fairfax, Gregory Co., SD. from 1969 until 1972. From July 22, 1972 until August
1979 Keith was the Director of Goldenrod Hills Community Action Agency in Walthill,
Thurston Co., NE. Following his marriage to Kathleen R. (Hanna) Ruffing on April 16, 1979 in
Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., MN. Lois Thoreson and her daughter, my niece, Marykay Thoreson
were witnesses at the wedding. I moved to Lincoln, Lancaster Co., NE in June 1979 and
worked for the Department of Aging until 1996. I semi-retired in 1996 but continued to work at
the Indian Center, Inc. from 1996 until 2006. I retired in January 2006 but returned to work part
time for the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, with the with the USDA,
National Agriculture Statistic Office Nov 5, 2007.

When Keith and Kathleen were married, Kathleen had two children from a previous marriage,
Michelle Lee Hanna and Charles Clayton Hanna, who were 9 and 8 years old at the time of their
mother's marriage to Keith. Not their biological father, Keith has considered them his children,
and they are included in this report, as are their childrens children.

Notes for KATHLEEN ROSE RUFFING:

Kathleen Rose Ruffing was born April 18, 1947, in Greenville, a small town in northwestern
Pennsylvania. When she arrived at the house on Coal Hill Road, her family included her father,
Bob,a welder at Westinghouse Electric in Sharon, her mother. Helen was devoted to the care of
her family including her maternal grandmother, Antoni Radish, who lived with them until her
death in 1949. Carol, Bob's daughter from his first marriage, spent part of her time with her
grandmother who had helped raise her after her Mother death. When other family members were
busy, Kathy spent her time with her dog Wags and several cats.

As a child, Kathy's personality was characterized by the blend of love of the wild life found in
the woods near her house and a love of books. As a result, she was often found perched in a tree
reading a book. Her love of plants and gardening was in part nurtured by enjoyment by her
mother's flower bed and in part by trips to visit her mothers relatives in Painsville, Ohio.

It was far easier to learn to identify azaleas, rhodedrum and yews than learn to speak Hungarian
in a few hours a year. She did enjoy other parts of her Hungarian ancestry - chicken paprikas,
goulash etc. Although she was less close to her paternal grandmother, Rose, than Carol was, she
did enjoy the family holidays with her father's side of the family and learning some German
words.

Kathy's school career began at St. Michael's. After she transferred to Reynold's Area Joint High
School, her extra curricular activities focused on Science Club, Math Club and Future
Homemakers of America. She explored various career plans but discarded library science and
psychology because a master's degree did not seem attainable.
After Kathy went to Penn State, she changed the spelling of her name to Kathi to avoid
confusion with the other Kathy's on her floor. This happened many, many years ago before Joe
Paterno became head coach. The College of Home Economics became the College of Human
Development and now included a broad range of careers including nursing and law enforcement
and corrections. While still at Penn State, Kathi married her sweetheart from high school. While
she was in graduate school, the family expanded to include Michelle and Charles. She also
worked as a dietitian in the hospitals in Altoona, Tyrone and Bellefonte. She finished her
Masters degree when they were at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo,
California.
She moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1972.
