Tog-L-Loc Basics
A Tog-L-Loc / Lance-N-Loc system consists of 5 major components.
1. The Force Mechanism:
A device capable of producing sufcient force to form the joint(s). Hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical presses
are generally used.
2. The Force Frame:
Forces must be contained to prohibit
exing at the punch / die. Deection will
cause degraded joint strength and tool
breakage.

4. The Stripper:
Both Tog-L-Loc and LanceN-Loc require use of a
spring stripper / clamping
mechanism which surrounds the punch tip. The
stripper must preload the
parts before punch entry,
and must allow full punch
travel. The spring force
must be sufcient to clamp
the parts together during
joining and prohibit upward extrusion of the metal
around the punch.

Tooling Descriptions
Tog-L-Loc and Lance-N-Loc tools come in three standard joint sizes, expressed as the punch tip
diameter or width. The correct joint size for a given application is determined by the following:
1. Thickness of metal being joined.
2. Available clearance or ange size.

TOOL SELECTION
1. Determine which joint size to use.
Joint strength increases with joint size (see example). Force required to produce the joint also increases, as does the physical size of the tooling. Choosing the correct joint size for a given application
involves determining the strength required of each joint, and accessibility of the joining site. The 4,6
joint is the most commonly used size in practical application.

Joint Data
BTM sheet metal joining tools are furnished with joint data documentation
expressed in the following terms.
1. Joint Size: Expressed as the punch tip diameter (Tog-L-Loc) or width of the die
anvil (Lance-N-Loc). For example, a .18 Tog-L-Loc has a punch tip diameter of
.180 (4.6mm). Common sizes are: .12 (3.0mm), .18 (4.6mm), .22 (5.5 mm) and
.25 (6.4mm) with special sizes used on occasion.
2. PTR: (Punch Tip Radius): Tog-L-Loc only. Expressed as a decimal gure
example: .010 (0.25mm). This dimension is determined at BTM to suit the application. There are two available radii; 0.010 and 0.020

1.
BTM numbers of punch and die tooling for reference and re-ordering.
2.
3.
The parts to be joined must allow adequate access for the tooling and
mate without gaps at the joint locations.
2.
3.
The machine must consistently produce sufcient force to form the joints.
4.
5.
6.
The tooling must be appropriate to the metals being joined, (i.e. Tog-L-Loc or
Lance-N-Loc, joint size, AD and PTR.) Tools purchased for one metal type
and thickness may not give the best results with a different metal.
7.
The tooling must be adjusted & aligned to properly form the joints, and be
secured to maintain these settings.
8.
The machine and tooling must be maintained properly so that all components
perform their intended function. For example, worn seals can reduce force
output thereby affecting joining ability.

Force Requirements
Notes: The chart should be used as a guide for power source selection only.
The forces listed in the chart are based on a test conducted 10/24/00 with BTM mild
steel coupons. The press was a 15-ton A/O equipped with an Accuforce system.
Each force value is the average of 10 samples.

General Design Guidelines
The punch should be guided a minimum of 1.12 (28.4mm) in the punch retainer.
The location tolerance to the centerline of the punch hole should be .0005 (.01mm)
The 940 punch mounting is preferred. While the set screw method is still acceptable.
If possible use a 5/16 - 24 set screw to retain a whistle notch punch, - 28 should be the minimum. The set screw should be perpendicular to the centerline of the punch.
The punch should have some means of adjustment. A backing plate or set screw behind the
holder would be an example.
The hole and tolerance for a standard diameter punch would be: .3750 +.0002 / -.0000
(9.525mm +.0051 / -.0000)
The hole and tolerance for a standard diameter punch would be: .5000 +.0002 / -.0000
(12.7mm +.0051 / -.0000)
The surface that the punch seats on should be through hardened. Typically, this material is 6150
with a hardness of 50-54 on the C scale.

Die Information
940 Series Die Assembly
The location tolerance to the centerline of the die hole should be .0005.
940 series dies require a knock out hole from the back side.
Because the 940 die has a built in blade shield the top of the die should not be
ush with the detail its mounted in. If anvil strength is not an issue, the typical
design method would expose the ring of small holes in the guard can.
The 940 die is better suited for applications exposed to coolants and lubricants.
Compared with a set screw, the 940 retention method is less likely to come loose
during normal machine cycling.
3 Bladed Elastomer
The location tolerance to the centerline of the die hole should be .0005.
3 bladed style A dies require a knock out hole from the back side.
3 bladed style A dies should have as much material protecting the blades as
possible.
Due to incompatibility between specic components of die compounds and the
standard Polyurethane (Yellow) Elastomer Rings, (2) alternative Elastomer
Rings may be used.
Following is a basic guide for usage of the alternatives.

Stripper Information
Strippers should be made of 6150 steel, with a hardness of Rc 50-54.
Contact Force is when the punch contacts the work piece.
The recommended stripper contact force for .12 TL is 200 lbs./joint.
The recommended stripper contact force for .18 TL is 300 lbs./joint.
The recommended stripper contact force for .22 TL is 525 lbs./joint.
The recommended stripper contact force for .25 TL is 750 lbs./joint.
The location tolerance to the centerline of the punch clearance hole(s) should be .005.
The location tolerance to the centerline of the shoulder screws should be .0005.
The basic dimensions for strippers are shown below.
When using round tip strippers, tip diameter should be larger than the
die pocket diameter.
Use shoulder screws from Unbrako or similar

How Lance-N-Loc
Page Title Works
Lance-N-Loc is a rectangular joint formed by drawing the
metals into a rectangular cup and then expanding the
sides to form a lock below the bottom sheet.

Notes: The chart should be used as a guide for power source selection only.
The forces listed in the chart are based on a test conducted 10/24/00 with BTM mild
steel coupons. The press was a 15-ton A/O equipped with an Accuforce system.
Each force value is the average of 10 samples.

Punch
General Design Guidelines
The punch should be guided a minimum of 1.12 in the punch retainer.
The location tolerance to the centerline of the punch hole should be .0005
The Ball Lock punch mounting is preferred.
The punch should have some means of adjustment. A backing plate or set screw
behind the holder would be an example.
The hole and tolerance for a standard diameter punch would be: .3750 +.0002 /-.0000
The hole and tolerance for a standard diameter punch would be: .5000 +.0002 /-.0000
The surface that the punch seats on should be through hardened. Typically, this
material is 6150 with a hardness of 50-54 on the C scale.
