Study to look at a later

MICHAEL SYMONS @MICHAELSYMONS_
TRENTON Should high school students start their
school day later each morning? What if that meant
starting elementary schools an hour earlier?
Those questions and others might have to be analyzed by the state Department of Education if a bill
unanimously endorsed Thursday by the Senate Education Committee eventually becomes law.
The proposal directs the state to study the issues,
benefits and options for a later start time for high
schools and middle schools, as recommended by the
American Academy of Pediatrics, which says that
teens need nine hours of sleep a night and that high
school classes should start at 8:30 a.m. or later.
They know that the average teenager is chronically
sleep-deprived and suffering from the same symptoms
as adults with sleep disorders, said Sen. Richard Codey, D-Essex, the bills sponsor. Sleep-deprived teenagers tend to be susceptible to tardiness, absenteeism,
moodiness, lack of concentration and the ability to
learn.
Codey said the average start time for high schools in
his district, which includes 14 towns in Essex and

Same too for the Ferraris. Because seriously? How many eligible

HOLMDEL How do you untangle

lifes biggest knots?
On a November morning at the Vonage headquarters along Main Street,
seven high school girls are trying to
figure that out. In a team-building exercise known as The Knot, the girls join
hands in a circle and are twisted into a
messy mass of entwined bodies.
Then they have to re-form the circle without letting go of each others hands.
Its not going so well.
You have to work together, says the nearest
adult, former New York Giants defensive end Eric
Dorsey.
Welcome to Heroes & Cool Kids, a mentoring
program run by former New York Jets running back
Bruce
Harper.

The premise: Ex-professional athletes

mentor high school students, who in turn mentor
fifth- and sixth-graders.
There are 400 teenagers representing nine high
schools from Monmouth, Middlesex and Ocean counties at this session in the Vonage building. The Knot
is stumping most of them.
Why do you think you stayed twisted? moderator
