INTRODUCTION TO KKS
1.1

DESIGNATION AND TYPE OF DATA CHARACTERS

In consideration of the various requirements placed on the identification of plants,

sections of plants and items of equipment in power stations, KKS has three different
types of code:
Process-related code
Process- related identification of systems and items of equipment according to their
functions in mechanical, civil, electrical and control and instrumentation engineering.
Point of installation code
Identification of points of installation of electrical and control and instrumentation
equipment in installation units (e.g. in cabinets, panels, consoles).
Location code
Identification of locations in structures, on floors and in rooms and also of fire areas.
Each of the above classifications uses a defined structure to describe a particular
information content using a string of alphanumeric characters. The uniform
composition of all three types of classification is used by all engineering disciplines in
their planning and engineering tasks, thus ensuring effective integration of
information coupled with unambiguous recognition by all concerned.
The titles of the breakdown levels of the three types of code will henceforth be as
follows:

Serial No. of

Table 1 summarises the designation and type of data characters of the breakdown
levels for all three different types of designation appearing in the KKS.

1.2

PROCESS-RELATED DESIGNATION

In this type of designation the entire system is subdivided according to the function or
process, since, whether for mechanical, electrical or control, the equipment units and
items must be identifiable in relation to the process.
The process-related designation is for many applications the most important
designation, since it permits, for example, locations of electrical and control
equipment, rooms, signals, and the designations in circuit diagrams to be related to
particular functions.
In the mechanical, electrical and instrumentation control engineering sectors, the
equipment for auxiliary services, power supply, open-loop control, instrumentation,
protection, etc., is treated as a process engineering function.
This block has the prefix sign "=". According to the standard, the prefix sign can be
omitted provided that the designation remains unambiguous.
1.3

POINT OF INSTALLATION IDENTIFICATION

As with the process-related designation, the KKS is also used to designate location,
principally of electrical and instrumentation and control equipment, but also of
mechanical equipment. Locations for example, coordinates, racks and positions in
cubicles etc. are designated in the breakdown level EQUIPMENT UNIT.
The identification letters now used for the Point of installation identification in the
breakdown level FUNCTION are the same as those for the process-related
designation. This improves recognition of the designations in the overall system.

Confusion with the process related designation is impossible since, according to DIN
40719, part 2, the prefix sign "+" has to be added to this designation block "Location.
An easy segregation is done using decadic numbering for process-related
designation and serial numbering for Point of installation identification, e.g.:
=
+

BBA10 means the function M.V. system (subsystem 10)

BBA 01 means the cubicle n1 of the MV system

At least the first process-related subsystem is 10.

Example of a one line diagram and engraves of related cubicles:

The process-related label of the consumers is stuck on the rigid part of the
switchboard, and the Point of installation identification of the switching devices is on
the opening or removable part.
1.4

LOCATION IDENTIFICATION

In order to clearly designate the position of plant, subsystems and equipment in the
power station, the building structure and floor are entered at the breakdown level 1,
and the rooms on the various floors of the building structure at the breakdown level 2.
The breakdown level 3 is omitted in such cases.

2.

BREAKDOWN LEVEL 0, TOTAL PLANT G

It may be necessary to identify units, unit-free plants or expansion stages within a

power station, such that a clear and unambiguous distinction exists between them. In
such a case, this designation must be agreed upon by all parties concerned,
regarding the contents and type of data character (A or N).
For Combined Cycle Power Plants, data character G shall be a numeric character
identifying the Power Station Unit or Non-unit Specific Plants.
See 4.2 above for G usage in conjunction with F0.

2.2

BREAKDOWN LEVEL 1, FUNCTION PREFIX NUMBER

F0:
For Combined Cycle Power Plants, data character F0 shall be a numeric character
used for the numbering of the similar systems and plants in the parts of a Power
Station, identified with character G.
G and F0 usage should be as follows:
The block identifies the set of main machinery.

10

Steam turbine and its generator for block 1 and

common systems for block 1
Common system between blocks

11

First gas turbine, its generator, first HRSG and

their auxiliaries for block 1

12

Second gas turbine, its generator, second HRSG

and their auxiliaries for block 1

F1, F2, F3:

The alphabetical symbols of this breakdown level are used to classify and divide the
overall plant into subsystems, systems or building structures. Wherever possible, all
three alphabetical symbols are permanently allocated, including their associated
boundary constraints and task allotment in modern power plant technology. The
breakdown of the first alphabetical character of the function code is given as an
example:
Main Functional Groups, F1:
A

Grid and Distribution Systems

Power Transmission and Auxiliary Power Supply

Instrumentation and Control Equipment

Instrumentation and Control Equipment (for use only when the function codes C
is insufficient for the identification)

Conventional Fuel Supply and Residue Disposal

Handling of Nuclear Equipment

Water Supply and Disposal

Conventional Heat Generation

Nuclear Heat Generation

Nuclear Auxiliary Systems

Steam, Water and Gas-Cycles

Main Machine Sets

Process Energy supply for External Users (e.g. District Heating)

Cooling Water Systems

Auxiliary Systems

Gas Generation and Treatment Systems

Ancillary Systems

Structures

Solar Systems

Heavy Machinery (not main machine sets)

Workshop and Office Equipment

See para. 5. Elementary systems code. ( F1, F2, F3)

When the third letter (F3) of the first level is not used because this information is not
necessary, an underscore (_) must be used.
Subdivision of systems, FN:
The two numbers of FN are dedicated according decadic numbering.
Decadic numbering in subsystem has the advantages over consecutive numbering
where subunits (e.g. parallel trains) of piping systems form a subgroup.
In each system the main line is divided in decades, and, if not sufficient, with unit
numbers within a decade. The other lines (return, by pass, vents, drains
recirculating...) are numbering by unit number as subsystems of the relevant decade.
In order to facilitate the application of KKS for a project managed by a consortium of
vendors, GE reserves sections of the FN codes as used on their GT, ST and
Generator drawings. Refer to para. 5 to review of GE reserved FN codes. These
codes should be reviewed on a project basis to ensure they are consistent with
scope and reflect the plant configuration.
2.3

BREAKDOWN LEVEL 2, EQUIPMENT UNIT A1, A2, AN, AN, AN,

2.3.1

General

In the process-related designation the first two alphabetical symbols (A1 and A2) are
used to distinguish between the mechanical apparatus and equipment units,
electrical and I & C equipment, and between the measuring and closed-loop control
circuits:

Main Groups of Equipment Units, A1:

A

Mechanical equipment (with moving parts)

Mechanical equipment (without moving parts)

Direct Measuring circuits

Closed-loop control circuits

Analogue and binary signal conditioning

Indirect measuring circuits

Electrical equipment

Subassemblies of main and heavy machinery

In the location designation, this breakdown level is used to designate - for electrical
and I&C equipment the racks and positions in panels, boards or cubicles and the
coordinates on the desks; in the case of mechanical equipment, also for coordinates,
for example, in the fuel tank.
In the room designation, this breakdown level is used to identify indoor areas
(rooms).
At this breakdown level, the numerical digits (AN) again have no classification
significance, except as detailed below, for all three types of designation, but merely
count the unit identified by the A1A2 digits.
See para. 6. Equipment unit code (A1, A2).
2.3.2

Coding of process valves and pipes

The alphabetical characters assigned to piping and accessories in the second level
are BR. Numbers must be, nominally, assigned in ascending units in the direction of
the main flow (downstream direction).
The pipe line number must only be changed:

When they have different functions from the point of view of process

When there are changes in the process conditions ( Pressure, Temperature,

Flow)

When there is a change of material

When there is a change in diameter associating the reducer with the line of
greater diameter

Changes in diameter caused by reducers for the purpose of inserting valves and
instruments will be excepted, as long as the diameter of the inlet pipe is equal to the
diameter of the outlet pipe.
The number of the line (in the second level) will not be modified when elements
considered as integrating parts are installed in the line; for example, valves,
temporary filters, expansion joints, restrictive orifices, flow elements, etc.
a)

VALVES

The process valves are identified in the first level with the code of its associated pipe
(or equipment) and in the second level with the alphabetical characters AA.
As with all the positions that precede the numerical characters AN, the different
valves will be numbered correlatively. An attempt will be made to adopt numbering
that ascends in the direction of the main flow. Therefore, in order to provide
information concerning the type of valve that is being denominated, an effort will be
made to establish the following series in the first of the three digits AN.

Pneumatic control valves (regulating or on/off)

Motor-driven process valves

Electric process valves

Manual drain and vent valves

Self-regulating valves (pressure, temperature, level, etc.)

Instrument root valves

Safety and relief valves

0, 1

Remaining manual or process check valves

This identification is independent from the accessories pertaining to the valve.

The solenoid valves associated with a control valve or gate, as well as their
accessories (limit switches, positioner, position transmitter, etc.), form part of such
valve or gate. They are therefore assigned the same identifiers in levels 1 and 2, but
differ in the third level.
The identification of accessories does not nominally appear in the process diagrams
b)

DRAINS AND VENTS

Drains and vents are denominated in the first level as a bypass of the system to
which they are designed to drain or vent. Such denomination covers up to the last

closing device, whether this is the twin valves or the discharge pipe to the
atmosphere.
The bypasses will be denominated consecutively within the corresponding ten
(decade numbering of sections), in accordance with the numbering established in the
first level for the system to which they drain or vent.
All the elements -such as pipes, valves or instruments- included in one of these
bypasses will be assigned the same identifier in the first level.
c)

BYPASSES

Bearing in mind the importance of clearly identifying the elements that form a bypass
and the need to maintain uniformity in all the project systems, the bypasses will be
identified with a different section number (level 1) but will maintain the tens number
assigned to the line from which they flow. Very simple bypasses (for example, the
bypass of control valves) can be assigned the same number as the line from which
they flow.
d)

HEAT EXCHANGERS

Because of their function, heat exchangers form part of at least two systems.
However, because of the need to establish single identifications, they must be
assigned to just one of the systems.
The rule to be followed is that of assigning the heat exchanger to the system that
requires its services (the system that absorbs heat in the case of heaters and the
system that gives out heat in the case of chillers) and which is therefore the reason
for the installation of the heat exchanger.
Identification of Piping Systems and Valves. Representation in P&I Diagrams:
The following specifications are valid for identification and representation in P&I
diagrams:
Numbering in the first Breakdown level is effected for parallel piping legs in
increments of ten, counting in flow direction.
Delimitation of a system identification in the first Breakdown level is represented by a
hollow needle.

For better recognition of the coding delimitation, it is to be made sure that the needle
is not placed directly in the branching or junction point, but in the line concerned.
The coding specified in the KKS system for the piping with the unit code BR.. is
merely to serve as identification of a pipe leg if it exhibits various nominal pipe size
graduations or for breakdown of a leg, e.g.: Up to control valve and from control
valve as well as for drain lines and vent lines on one leg. The symbol for the
delimitation within the BR delimitation is to be a solid needle.

Identification of the piping systems is carried out using "flags". The direction of the
"flag" is to indicate the flow direction. The flag shall contain the 1st Breakdown level.
The unit code BR.. is written below the flag.

Measuring Point Representation in P&I Diagrams

The measuring points are represented by an oblong.

To describe the measured variable and function, each measuring symbol is provided
in line 1 with a number of identification letters. . The meaning of these identification
letters was determined according to ISA S5.1. The first set of letters identifies the
measured variable. Certain modifications of the measured variable are stated as
supplementary letter in the second digit. The sequential letters in the sequence A, C,
I, N, R, indicate the signal processing of the measured variable.

BREAKDOWN LEVEL 3, ITEM B1, B2, BN, BN

2.4.1

General

This section serves, in the case of the electrical and I & C systems, for the
designation of equipment items - e.g. switches, pushbuttons relays etc. - in
accordance with IEC. In accordance with this standard, the KKS includes a "-" sign at
the first alphabetical digit for the electrical items.
If needed and in respect of mechanical and process engineering, the KKS can be
used here to designate the mechanical equipment and components, such as pumps
couplings and gear units.

Alphabetical digits at this breakdown level are:
