Classica(on

of La.ces and Crystal Structures

A brief summary
Considered only translational symmetry so far. There are (obviously)
other symmetries.
classification based on all rigid operations that take
the lattice into itself. This set is known as the symmetry group or
space group of the lattice. Types of operations : translations,
rotations, reflections and inversion.
Any symmetry oera,on of a BL can be compounded out of a
transla,on TR through a BL vector R, and a rigid opera,on
leaving at least one point xed.

Seven Crystal Systems

Point Group: a subset of opera, ons that leave one point xed
Space group TR + Point group opera(on

There are 7 point groups and 14 dis(nct Space groups

(Stretch a cube along body diagonal;
no rt. angles, but all sides equal and
all angles between prim. vectors equal)

E very symmetry opera,on of a cube is also a symmetry opera,on of a regular
octahedron, and vice versa. Not every symmetry opera,on of a cube is a symm. op. of
a regular tetrahedron.; e.g., rot of 90 about vert. axis shown is a symm. op. of cube,
but not tetrahedron.
