A selected passage from the Gospel of Mark Passage is Mark 5 21-44
Summary of Mark chapter 5 verses 21 to 43
The two events take place after Jesus had rescued a man from a legion of demons. The demons had
moved from the man and entered into swine. The owners of the swine witnessed a great loss as the
swine moved into the sea and died. These people valued the value of money they could have obtained
from selling the swine (unclean animals) more than the value of a man that had been rescued. They
feared that Jesus might do other miracles that may put into more problems and they ordered him to
leave the place. After Jesus had left to the other side of the sea and a great multitude surrounded him.
Before he spoke anything to the multitude Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue approaches Jesus.
Jairus believed that Jesus could heal his daughter and came to seek his help. Jesus accepted to go and
heal his daughter. While on the way to Jairus home a messenger from his home with sad news that his
daughter was already dead hence no need to trouble Jesus. Jesus heard the saddening message and
responded before Jairus could respond assuring Jairus to believe that his daughter would live. The only
thing that Jairus was to do was to belief. He did not allow anybody to follow him except Peter and
James, and John. After Jesus and Jairus arrived he questioned the people that were mourning since the
girl was not dead but asleep. The people laughed him to scorn. Jesus put all people out, away from
where the girl was sleeping and remained with her father and mother. Jesus took the girl by her hand
and called her to rise. The damsel responded to Jesus call and arose and walked to a great amazement

of her parents and the three disciples. He warned them not to tell anybody whatever had happened. He
also ordered some food for the child.
While on his way to Jairus home a woman with an issue of blood for 12 years approached Jesus. The
woman had utilized all her resources in seeking treatment from many physicians of her time with no
success. She was embarrassed to call the attention of Jesus and of the multitude because of her
condition. She believed that a touch of Jesus garment could be sufficient to heal her. In faith she moved
near to Jesus and touched his garment and immediately she recovered from her flow of many years.
Jesus felt power moving from him and questioned the multitude. The woman was afraid that Jesus
would discover her and trembling she moved forward to tell Jesus her full story. Jesus assured her that
her faith had brought about the healing and she should not worry but go home in peace and fully
recovered from her plague.
Commentaries Interpretation
While other people rejected Jesus and commanded him to leave from their country, other people
recognize Jesus as the remedy to their problems. The gospel will always go where it will be appreciated
and received in a better way. Jesus healed the woman with blood on his way to Jairus home. He could
have chosen not to heal her until he had completed his first mission. We should go about doing good
everywhere, away from home, on the way home and at home. The woman goes to Jesus as the last
remedy after trying all other options. People naturally tend to find their own solutions to problems that
are beyond any human ability instead of seeking the freely and readily available help of Jesus. People
can opt to go into diversions of nature and gay, move headlong into pleasures or superstition to recover
from personal and family maladies. There will be no peace to such people and their problems will persist
like 12 years of blood flow. Jesus recognizes both acts of sin and acts of faith people commit in secret.
He recognizes people that find peace and trust him since power must move from him to their lives. Jesus

has power to comfort troubled people or to prevent people from succumbing to external troubles. Jesus
requires humans to recognize and depend on him and get salvation and freedom from the things that
torment people. Peace, true peace comes from Jesus, especially after being healed from physical and
spiritual illnesses including forgiveness of sin.
As we strongly believe that Jesus can heal all diseases, we should believe also that he can raise the dead.
Death is the same thing as sleep for Jesus. Unwavering faith in Jesus is the best remedy for times of fear
and grief. By a word of power the daughter of Jairus lived again. Such power is available to give life to
people that are naturally dead in sin and trespass. The power of Jesus is enormous that all our problems,
perplexities, and anxieties vaporize in the presence of Jesus. We can always find comfort in the power of
Jesus through faith in him (Mathew Henrys Concise Commentary).
