ABOUT KIPP NYC COLLEGE PREP HIGH SCHOOL 
 

1. What is KIPP NYC College Prep? 
KIPP NYC College Prep is a free public charter school that opened in 2009 to serve advancing KIPP NYC 
high school students from the four KIPP NYC middle schools (KIPP Academy, KIPP STAR, KIPP AMP and 
KIPP Infinity).  This coming 2010‐11 school year, we will be opening up a small number of 9th grade seats 
to students that do not currently attend KIPP NYC schools.  Next year we will serve approximately 400 
students in grades 9 and 10, and will grow to nearly 800 students in grades 9 through 12 by 2012. 
 
2. Where is KIPP NYC College Prep located?  Can I visit the school? 
KIPP NYC College Prep is currently located at 625 W. 133rd Street, 3rd floor in Harlem, New York.  Next 
year, we will move to a new location to be determined in the spring.  If you would like to visit our school, 
we will be hosting an Open House on March 24th for our applicants to meet our current students and 
faculty and learn more about our school program.  To rsvp for this event, please contact Jesus Powell at

3. What sort of results have KIPP schools had? 
• On the 2009 New York State tests, 95% of KIPP NYC students scored at or above grade level in 
Math. In English/Language Arts, 83% of KIPP NYC students scored at or above grade level.  
• KIPP NYC College Prep’s student daily attendance rate is 97%. 
• 86% of KIPP NYC alumni have matriculated to college. 
 
4. What is the school schedule? 
By choosing to enroll at KIPP NYC College Prep High School, families and students commit to an 
extended school day that lasts from 8:15am to 5:00pm on Monday through Thursday, and 8:15am to 
3:30pm on Friday.  They also commit to attending a Saturday school program that lasts from 9:00am to 
1:00pm one Saturday a month, as well as a mandatory Freshman Orientation over the summer (typically 
two to three weeks) and summer school or summer jobs as rising Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors.   
 
5. What is the school calendar? 
In general, KIPP NYC College Prep High School’s school calendar will follow the same schedule as the 
New York City Department of Education during the 2010‐2011 school year.  Our summer programming is 
mandatory for all KIPP NYC College Prep High School students. 
 
6. Do the students wear uniforms to school?  Do I have to pay for the uniform shirts? 
Yes, all students are required to wear uniforms consisting of khaki pants and polo shirts at KIPP NYC 
College Prep High School.  All students will be provided with one KIPP NYC College Prep High School polo 
shirt free of charge.  They will have the opportunity to purchase additional shirts, sweaters, and skirts 
throughout the school year.     
 
7.   How many students are in each classroom? 
While the number of students in each classroom will vary depending on the subject, the average class 
size for the 2009‐2010 school year is 19 students. 
 
  
 
8.   Do you take ELL (English Language Learner) or Special Education students? 
Yes!   
 
 

9.   When is the first day of school? 
The first day of school for incoming 9th graders, known as Freshman Orientation, will be on a date to be 
determined in July or August 2010.  There is no Saturday School over the summer. 
 
10.   Do you have free breakfast and lunch programs? 
Yes.  Those students who are eligible for free or reduced lunch will receive breakfast and lunch (and an 
afternoon snack) as they did at their previous school. 
 

 
ABOUT THE LOTTERY PROCESS 
1.    Do you have to apply to get into KIPP NYC College Prep High School? 
KIPP NYC College Prep is a public school that serves advancing KIPP NYC 8th graders attending one of the four 
KIPP NYC middle schools (KIPP Academy, KIPP STAR, KIPP AMP, and KIPP Infinity middle schools).  For the 
2010‐11 school year, there will be a student lottery for any open 9th grade seats that may come available. 
We expect to accept 15‐20 students through the 2010‐11 lottery. 
 
The only information needed to enter the KIPP NYC College Prep High School lottery is the student’s name 
and contact information.  No test scores, grades, recommendations, or behavioral history will be taken into 
consideration. All applications must be received by April 8 at 5pm via mail, www.kippnyc.org, or in person. 
 

2.    How does the lottery work?  Do I have to attend the lottery?  How will I find out if my child was 
selected in the lottery? 
If the number of families interested in attending the school exceeds the number of open seats, then we will 
conduct a lottery on April 13, 2010 at 5:30pm. All students entered into the lottery will have their names 
drawn by an independent auditor. Open slots will be filled in the following order:  
1. Brothers/Sisters of Current KIPP NYC Students 
2. Applicants Eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch and Residing in NYC School Districts 5, 7 & 17 
3. Applicants Eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch and Not Residing in NYC School Districts 5, 7 & 17 
4. Applicants Not Eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch and Residing in NYC School Districts 5, 7 & 17 
5. Applicants Not Eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch and Not Residing in NYC School Districts 5, 7 & 17 
 
Upon submission of the application, applicants will have the opportunity to document their free and reduced 
lunch eligibility. Families do not need to be present at the lottery. Students who are selected will be 
contacted by phone to enroll. Families may also call the school beginning April 15th to find out the number 
that they were assigned in the lottery. 
 
3.  Do you accept applications 10th graders? 
No, we are not currently accepting applications for 10th grade. 
 
4.  Can I enter the lottery more than once? 
No. Each child may only enter once. Any duplicate applications will be removed prior to the lottery. 
 
5. If I entered the lottery last year, do I need to enter again? 
Yes. There is a new lottery every year. Waitlists do not carry over from year to year.
