Dean Road Bridge #0103 in Henrietta and Florence Township (Erie County): Renovation of
historic bridge over the Vermilion River. Construction began in March of 2013 and the bridge
was opened to traffic in July of 2014. The contractor was Mid-Ohio Structures from Norwalk,
Ohio. Total construction cost was $1.5 million. 95% of the funding was provided through the
FHWA with the balance being split between the Lorain and Erie County Engineers. The project
received the State of Ohio Historic Bridge Award.
Sugar Ridge Road Bridge #0214 in the City of North Ridgeville: Replacement of existing single
span concrete structure using a precast-three sided box. Project began in March and bridge was
open to traffic in early June. Total cost was approximately $325,000. A grant in the amount of
$142,000 was provided by the Ohio Department of Transportation Office of Jobs and
Commerce. Balance was split between the Lorain County Engineer and the City of North
Ridgeville. Contractor was Schirmer Construction from North Olmsted, Ohio. The design-build
process of project delivery was utilized to expedite the project.
Foster Road Bridge #0144 in Penfield Township: Replacement of existing concrete structure
with a new cast in place concrete bridge. Construction began in April and the bridge was
opened to traffic in June. Total project cost was $239,000 with 89% of the funding being
provided by the Ohio Public Works Commission. Contractor was Denes Concrete from
Wellington, Ohio.
Chamberlain Road Bridge #0354 in Pittsfield Township: Replacement of existing single span
concrete structure with a new cast in place concrete bridge. Construction began in February
and the bridge was open to traffic in May. Total project cost was $350,000 with 95% of the
funding being provided by the FHWA. Contractor was Eclipse from Chagrin Fall, Ohio.
Pyle South Amherst Bridge #0014 in the City of Oberlin and New Russia Township: Replacement
of existing single span concrete structure with a new cast in place concrete bridge. Construction
began in September and the bridge was open to traffic in November. Total project cost was
$285,000 with 74% of the funding provided by the Ohio Public Works Commission. The balance
was split between the City of Oberlin and the Lorain County Engineer. Denes Concrete from
Wellington, Ohio was the contractor.
Culvert on SR511 in the Village of Rochestor: Emergency replacement of a failed concrete
culvert with a new precast four sided box. The contractor was Mark Haynes construction from
Nowalk, Ohio. Total cost was $164,000 with 80% being provided in the form of an emergency
Ohio Public Works Commission Grant. The balance was split between the Village of Rochestor,
ODOT and the Lorain County Engineer. Construction began in October and the road was
reopened in November.
North Ridge Road Relocation in Brownhelm Township: Relocation and reconstruction of North
Ridge road along the upper bank of Mill Hollow. Also included the construction of a retaining
wall incorporating a row of concrete caissons. Total project cost was $750,000 with 89% of the
funding being provided by the Ohio Public Works Commission. Construction began in late July
and the road was opened to traffic in November. The contractor was Denes Construction from

Wellington, Ohio. Additional funding available with the grant was used to replace the bridge
deck over the Vermilion River to help prolong the life of the structure.
8. Griswold Road widening and reconstruction in the City of Elyria and Elyria Township: Three lane
widening from Lake Ave to Leona with new concrete pavement. Total project cost is $4.8
million with funding being provided by NOACA (approximately 80%), the Ohio Public Works
Commission, the Lorain County TID, the Lorain County Engineer and the City of Elyria (Sanitary
Sewers). Fabrizi Construction from Middleburg Hts., Ohio is the contractor. Construction began
in January and all lanes are currently complete and open to traffic. The project is 95% complete
and work to be completed includes sidewalks, aprons and final grading. The project was
originally slated to last two construction seasons but was accelerated at the request of the
contractor so that all pavement would be complete in one construction season.
9. SR57 widening and reconstruction in the Village of Grafton and Eaton Township: Three lane
widening through the Village of Grafton and continuing north into Eaton Township. Total
project cost is $4.2 million with funding being provided by NOACA, the Ohio Public Works
Commission, ODOT and the Village of Grafton. The contractor is the Shelly Company from
Twinsburg, Ohio. The project began in April and was expected to be completed in November.
Although all lanes are open, inclement weather has postponed the placement of the final
asphalt wearing surface. If the weather improves, this will be completed by the end of the year.
If not, the final coarse will be completed in the spring along with outstanding sidewalks, aprons
and grading.
10. 2014 Lorain County Chip and Seal Program: During the month of September, Vermilion and
Indian Hollow Roads were chip sealed to increase pavement length. Total project cost was
$220,000 with funding being provided by the Lorain County Engineer. Erie Blacktop from
Sandusky, Ohio was the contractor.
