The coupler (with two ODUs mounted on it) is used when you want to ensure
hot standby (asymmetrical coupler suggested) or frequency diversity
(symmetrical coupler suggested) operation modes and you have only one
antenna.
INTRACOM TELECOM can provide you with specially designed antennas
(called integrated antennas with diameter up to 1,8 m or 6 ft) onto which you
can directly mount the coupler without the need of a waveguide. In case you
have a non-integrated antenna, you should get the appropriate mounting kit
in order to mount the coupler onto the mast and connect the coupler to the
antenna through a waveguide.

Safety Precautions
WORKING ON THE BUILDINGS ROOF
During stormy weather, do not perform any mechanical assembling or
antenna beaming works on the buildings roof.
The metal structure of towers / masts is prone to lightning.
PROPER GROUNDING
Never power up the indoor equipment not yet connected to a proper
grounding system.
There is risk of equipment failure and/or electrical shock.
Ensure that the indoor grounding system measures a path resistance less
than 4 .
Ensure that an appropriate grounding terminal exists at the proximity of the
outdoor equipment installation position.
ESD PROTECTION
Always use proper antistatic protection (i.e. grounding bracelet,
antistatic bags, etc.) when handling the system cards.
Parts bearing the ESD sign (see left) have ESD sensitive exposed
components.

conditions
Indoor
grounding
system
All racks within the installation premises should be connected to a lowresistance grounding system. The metal body of the rack, into which the
subracks are to be mounted, should be connected to this grounding system.
The enclosure of each subrack must be electrically connected to the racks
metal body (via a short grounding cable) to provide protection against
harmful discharge conditions.
Outdoor
grounding
system
Cable conduits
Appropriate cable conduits should exist for the routing of installed cables,
inclusive of the coaxial IF cable(s) connecting the indoor equipment with the
outdoor transceiver boxes on the buildings roof.
Continued on next page
18
IF cables
The IF cables, connecting the indoor equipment with the outdoor equipment,
should be of coaxial 50-ohm type.
The maximum length of the IF cables depends on their quality and the
attenuation that they impose to the carried IF signal.
Typical lengths can reach 150 m, using a low-cost coaxial cable of 10,5 dB /
100 m maximum attenuation at 350 MHz, or 300 m, using a low-loss coaxial
cable of 5 dB / 100 m maximum attenuation at 350 MHz.
Under no circumstance should the total attenuation (imposed by
the IF cable itself) exceed 16 dB at 350 MHz.

Lightning
protection
The network port distributors (optical distributors excluded) and the power
supply distributors should be equipped with the appropriate gas arresters, to
provide protection against lightning conditions.
Such conditions may induce voltage peaks on the cables, and thus disturb
the operation of the indoor equipment. For this purpose, all electrical
distributors should be connected to the local grounding system to allow the
installed gas arresters to operate.

Preparing the
LCF12-50 cable
Step
Action
Insert the cable into the trimming tool so that the edge of the
jacket lies in the collet shown with the arrow.
25
Step
Action
Hold the cable firmly and rotate the trimming tool in the direction
of the arrow engraved on the tool without applying force greater
than the trimming tool spring tension. Stop rotating when the
tool rotates freely.
26
Step
Action
Use a file to smooth the edge of the inner conductor. Then insert it
in the appropriate hole of the trimming tool and rotate it to
completely smooth the edge.
Push the back nut of the connector onto the cable applying a
force-full push to lock into place. Pull to check if locked.
27
Step
Action
Insert the cable into the appropriate hole of the trimming tool, hold
the connector back nut firmly and rotate the cable so that the
protruding pin (arrow 1) of the trimming tool flares the outer
conductor. The flared diameter should be up to 14,5 mm.
NOTE
10
Place the body of the connector over the back nut of the
connector and screw into place.
11
28
Step
Action
12
Seal the opening between the back nut and the cable jacket with
insulating tape. Wrap the tape repeatedly around the cable. Then
squeeze the paste tube provided into the charging hole to fill with
paste. When the paste begins to discharge from the vent hole (a
second smaller hole), seal the vent hole with the insulating tape
as well. Resume squeezing the tube until there is a constant
discharge of the paste from the pierced holes in the tape.
13
Remove the paste tube and screw the cover to seal the charging
hole. Remove excess paste from the cable jacket.
14
Repeat the whole procedure for the other end of the cable.

In this chapter you will be guided to implement the following two scenarios:
Single ODU with Non-Integrated Antenna (with use of Mounting Kit for one
ODU)

for two ODUs)
Prerequisites
The maximum distance between the ODU(s) and the IDU should not
exceed 300 m.
You should have prepared the IF cable(s) and the ODU(s) grounding
cable(s) before proceeding to the ODU(s) installation.

PLUGGING / UNPLUGGING THE IF COAXIAL
CABLE
Never plug or unplug the IF coaxial cable to
or from the outdoor transceiver boxes when
the respective indoor equipment is powered

There is risk of equipment failure and/or
electrical shock, as the IF cable carries the
outdoor transceivers DC operating voltage
(48 V).
Screw the right-angle connector of the IF cable onto the ODU Ntype connector. In case you intend to install a second ODU,
mark the IF cable appropriately to know which is the IF cable
of ODU 1 and ODU 2.

Insert the O rings into the grooves and apply silicone grease on the

66
Step
Action
If the coupler mounting plate provided is with PBR flange (i.e. the
flange with the O-ring), you should interpose the connecting plate
provided between the waveguide flange and the coupler mounting
plate flange as shown in the photo below (the brass surface towards
the tin plated waveguide surface) and then proceed to step 8.
67
Step
Action
Avoid making any sharp or small radius bends
on the flexible and twistable waveguides!
Twisting or bending the waveguide beyond a
certain limit (see Appendix on page 72) could
cause permanent damage to the waveguide
(hearing a scratching/stretching noise from the
inside wire frame of the waveguide indicates you
have crossed the limit).
