Beauty Parlor Example

In a beauty parlor, customers arrive with an interarrival rate of 10 5 minutes. 70% of the
customers want their hair cut, washed and styled. The rest of the customers want their hir
dyed, washed and styled. There are 3 hairdressers who can cut hair and 2 who can dye hair.
There ae only two wash basins and 2 hairdryers to be used in styling. After their hair is done,
customers pay at the
desk before they leave but there is only one desk and payment takes about 31 minutes.
Simulate the system for 200 customers
to get serviced and leave the beauty parlor. Measure the queues for statistics. (Note: When a
hairdresser starts servig a customer, he completes the service for that customer before
starting a new one.) Average required times for each activity is given below:
hair drying: 105 minutes
hair dyeing: 355 minutes
hair washing: 51 minutes
hair styling: 155 minutes
Simulate in GPSS.

2
Cafeteria Example
People arrive at a cafeteria with an interarrival time of 105 seconds. There are two serving
areas: one for hot food and the other for sandwiches. The hot food area is selected by 80% of
the customers and it has 6 servers. The sandwich area is selected by the remaining 20% of
the customers and has only one server.
Hot food takes 1 minute to serve and sandwiches take minutes. When they have been
served, the customers move into the seating part of the cafeteria which has a seating capacity
for 200 people. The average time for eating hot food is 30 10 minute and for a sandwich it is
15 5 minutes. When they have finished eating, they leave the seating area and the cafeteria.
Measure the queues for service and simulate the system for 1000 people to finish their meal
and leave in GPSS..

Switching centre example
Messages are being generated at the rate of every 73 seconds.
They are to be trasmitted to D1 with probability 0.7 and to D2 with probability 0.3. All
messages are first sent by a single main line to a switching center, which then passes them
onto their final destinations (D1 or D2) by way of individual lines. Only one message cn be on
any of the lines at a given time. There may be only a maximum of 300 messages in the
switching center, awaiting a free line. If a 301th message arrives, it is discarded from the
system. The messages are uniformly distributed in size from 10 to 100 characters. The main
line can send messages at the rate of 10 characters per second while the other two lines
send them at a rate of 5 characters per second. Simulate the transmission of 1000 messages
and measure the queues for service in GPSS.

4
Pump station
Customer arrives at pump station with mean time of 28 minutes, variation of 6 minutes and
joins the queue for service. It takes 158 minutes for pump station to serve a customer.
Simulate for 250 customers in GPSS.
5
Job
A job arrives at the rate of 30020 minutes. The repairman takes 27030 minutes for
repairing. There is a chance of 5 % of work sent for rework. Simulate for 300 customers in
GPSS

Single server Problem
A bank has one drive-in teller and room for 1 additional customer to wait. Customers arrive
and when the queue is full, park and go inside the bank to transact business. The time for

Customers arrive at a taxi stand with mean 6 minutes and variance 6 minutes. They take taxi
to reach their destination. There are two types of taxis- normal and fast. Normal taxi takes
mean 8 and variance 4 minutes. Fast taxi takes mean 6 and variance 4 minutes. Customers
choose fast taxi with probability of 20 %. Calculate for 100 customers using GPSS.
