1. Theme of study
AREA: Ship Accidents.
TOPIC: Analyze at least three major ship accidents/incidents that had either occurred in
the same sea area or had suffered similar effects in different periods of time. You can
choose either 3 tankers or 3 bulk carriers or 3 passenger Ro-Ro ferries or 3 container
ships. You should follow the steps presented below:

Identify the main similarities and differences of the three or more accidents
setting as a measure any legal tools.
Present the relative theories and literature reviews.
Analyze and develop all arguments involved by using real case-studies.
Evaluate the information assembled.
Propose specific alternative solutions.

2. You must write your research project according to the guidelines that
can be found and downloaded from i-learn
(*) in the methodology section of the research project you should use one of the riskbased assessment methods or environmental impact assessments presented in chapter
16 of the lecture notes.

3. You may wish to analyze this essay based on specific criteria:

ships particulars and other data


basic characteristics of accidents

previous incidents in the broaden area lessons not learned


legal issues raised (loss of cargo, damage to ship, salvage etc.)
consequential actions taken by international bodies
compensation of pollution damage and environmental impacts (if any)
social and political impacts (if any)
insurance issues (total losses, partial loss, send for scrap etc.)
any other relevant information you wish to comment

4. You may wish to answer questions such as:

What were the actions taken at the international level?


What were the lessons learnt?
Which are the improving measures adopted from the ship-owners side?
