This course covers most of the text Pre-algebra and Introductory Algebra by Lial, Hestwood, Hownsby, and
McGinnis The amount of material to be covered necessitates that this course moves rapidly. In order to do
well, it is my opinion that you must attend every class. You should be taking this class if you have never had
a successful algebra experience. We will cover all algebra topics as if you have never seen them before. If
you are taking this class because you think your algebra skills are just “rusty”, you will probably find that the
class is not challenging enough. However, if you have never taken or done well in an algebra class, you will
probably find this class very difficult. Most of the topics will be new for you and thus it has a very steep
learning curve. Plan to come to class everyday and spend about 1 and a half to 2 hours a day studying and
completing the homework.

Required Materials:
Textbook: Pre-algebra and Introductory Algebra by Lial, Hestwood, Hownsby, and McGinnis.
Along with this you will need an access code for the mathxl website. (This comes bundled with the
new textbooks or can be purchased at the mathxl website www.mathxl.com for $40)
A scientific calculator: I recommend the TI-30XIIS–it is easy to use and has all of the functions
you will need for the next few quarters. You may not use your cell phone as a calculator on tests.
Graph Paper

To find many of your assignments for the quarter, the course syllabus, and extra-credit assignments,

Grade:
Your grade is based on total points. The chart on the following page will allow you to keep track of the points
you earn.
Final Exam --240 points
At the end of the quarter you will take a cumulative final that is worth 240 points. I will distribute a study
guide for the final as we near the end of the quarter.

Tests – 100 points each Group Exams –25 points each

You must be present on test days! If you miss a test without prior arrangements, the score will be replaced by
the same percentage you receive on your final exam. You can only do this once! The second missed test will
result in a zero. If you know that you will be unable to attend, you may arrange to take the test in advance. If
you are more than 10 minutes late for a group exam, you may not be able to earn the points for that exam.
Your group is depending on you – please be on time!

Homework – 20 points each

Homework is due on the dates listed in the academic calendar. Homework will not be accepted late
however; you may have someone in your group turn-in an assignment for you or you may turn it in early.
These assignments will be comprised of work covered during that week. To receive credit for these
assignments, you must show work whenever possible. Do not do your work on a separate piece of paper
because I want to see how you set up the problem, not just the answer. Your homework schedule is shown on
the academic calendar. Some assignments are due on Friday and must be completed at the Mathxl site. You
should also be doing problems from each section every day. Try to do about 30 problems a night. If the
section has about 60 problems, do the odds, if there are about 90 problems, do the multiples of 3, etc. The
quizzes will be based on these daily assignments.

Quizzes – 10 points each

A few times a week you will have a quiz. These group quizzes will last about 15 minutes and will
start at 1:15pm. You must be here on time to be able to participate in the quiz. Quizzes cannot be
made up so it is important that you make it to class on these days. The problems will be very
similar to the problems in the book, but some may require a written response.

Grading Scale

Help is available
There is a math center in Bldg. 22, room 222 that is available at no cost to you. You do not need an
appointment to stop by and get help. There are videos tutorials and examples at the mathxl site.
Come see me during my office hours for extra help. Hook up with some class members and study
together – it really helps!
