1.

WORK SEQUENCE AND METHODOLOGY


1.1.

Storage and handling

1. The pipes will be stacked in the site store on a flat surface at a height not exceeding 1.7m from
the bottom layer. Fittings will be separately packed and stored as per the sizes required for the
project. All open ends of pipes will be covered to protect from foreign matter, dirt/debris.

1.2.

General Piping Installation Guidelines

1. Pipe work shall be installed in accordance with the piping general arrangements and their
supporting drawings, specifications and schedules.
2. Installation of pipe work shall be carried out under conditions satisfactory to the contractor.
3. All work performed and completed must meet the approval of the contractor.
4. Scheduling of work to carry out the installation of pipe work shall be agreed and to the
satisfaction of the contractor and shall be co-coordinated with the work schedules of other
trades and disciplines involved in the overall construction.

1.3.

Installation of pipes

1. Run all piping as direct as possible, avoiding unnecessary offsets and conceal piping in finished
rooms.
2. 2 and below sizes of pipes are made threaded, 2 and above sizes are normally grooved type.
Groove can be made Cut groove or Roll groove. We will make Roll Grooves utilizing
manufacturers Roll Grooving Tools
3. Make tee connections with standard tee fittings for full size branches.
4. All piping must be rigidly supported by a combination network comprised of pipe hangers and
rigid support brackets. Pipe hangers are used to support the dead load of the pipe system.
Pipe hangers will be spaced according to the relevant NFPA standard / Specification clause and
Hanger rod sizes and numbers will comply with the requirement of the respective NFPA
standard / Specification clause or Manufactures recommendations.

1.4.

Installation of Fire Hose Reel / Fire Hose Cabinets

1. Check cabinets are approved size and dimension. Inspect for signs of damage.
2. Locate exact location of these Cabinets as per approved shop drawings and with careful
measure of elevation and plumb.
3. Fix cabinet using recommended Rawl (anchor bolts) bolts. Proceed with installation of
accessories, lock shield valve, landing valves, etc. taking in consideration of approval for these
devices.
a. Installation of Breaching Inlet
4. Locate Breaching inlet cabinet and its accessories as shown on the shop drawing near the main
entrance of the building for Civil defence inject water in to the system in case of emergency.

1.5.

Threaded Joints

1. Threaded piping will be made with Teflon tape or with a suitable pipe sealing compound (jute
and mastic combination) applied on male threads only. Ends of pipe will be reamed out before
being made up into fittings.
2. Joints in threaded steel pipe will conform to the American National taper pipe thread, ANSI B1.
20.1 Or British Standard BS 21. All burrs will be removed, pipe ends will be reamed or filed out
size of bore, and all chips will be removed.
a. Pipe Fabrications and Installation
3. Make piping layout and installation in the most advantageous manner possible with respect to
headroom, valve access, opening and equipment clearance, and clearance for other work,
particular attention will be given to piping in the vicinity of equipment. Preserve the equipment
parts for maintenance.
4. Cut all pipes accurately to measurement determined at the site. After cutting the pipe, ream it
and remove all burrs.
5. Install piping neatly, free from unnecessary traps and pockets. Work into place without springing
or forcing. Use fittings to make all changes in direction. Make all connections to equipment
using flanged joints or unions. Make reducing connections with reducing fittings only.
6. Remove dirt, scale and other foreign matter from inside piping before tying in sections, fitting,
valves or equipment.

1.6.

Offsets and Fittings

1. Carefully investigate the structural and finish conditions affecting the work and take such steps
as may be required to meet such conditions.
2. Install all piping close to walls, ceilings and columns so piping will occupy the minimum space.
Proper space will be provided for covering and removal of pipe, special clearance, and for
offsets and fittings.
3. Pipe work will be installed not closer than 200 mm to electrical conduits, lighting, and power
cables. Pipes will be spaced in ducts, ceilings, voids and plant areas, such as adequate access is
permitted to any pipe for maintenance or removal without disturbance to the remaining pipe
work and other services.
4. Pipes will not be solidly built into walls or plaster. Pipe joints will not be positioned within the
thickness of walls, floors or in any other inaccessible position. Pipes passing through walls and
floors will be sleeved; where they are exposed to view chrome plated covers will be fitted.
5. Couplers, unions and fittings will be screwed up to the reduced depth of the thread, such that
no more three-turns are showing when pulled up tight.
6. All pipes, valves and fittings and connected equipment will be thoroughly cleaned of rust, sand
and dust, scale and other foreign matter before erection and before any initial fill water for
hydraulic testing.
7. Prior to hydraulic testing, all pipe work systems including valves, strainers and fittings will be
washed thoroughly. Any washing of the piping systems will be carefully carried out where there
are isolation valves or equipment are employing.

8. Any stoppage due to foreign matter or air lock which is found to impede the flow of fluid will be
removed, either before or after the systems are in operation.
9. Fittings will be of the eccentric pattern to ensure proper drainage and the elimination of air
pockets wherever necessary. Increases or decreases in pipe diameters required to suit fittings,
tee-offs and equipment connections will be formed using taper pieces, flanged as
10. Required with taper reduction located about axis of the pipe to facilitate proper flow and to
allow proper venting and draining of the pipes. The angle of the taper of such fabricated taper
pieces will not be greater than twenty (20 ) degree.

1.7.

Painting

1. All pipes will be cleaned inside and outside for removal of dust and debris before painting.
2. One coat of Approved Red-oxide Primer will be applied of 35 Microns film thickness
3. After drying, one coat of Approved Enamel Paint will be applied of 35 Microns film thickness
before installation of pipe.
4. Finally one coat of Approved Enamel Paint of 35 Microns will be applied after hydraulic test and
in the final stages.

1.8.

Flushing: Cleaning of Piping and Equipment

1. After piping is erected, all piping systems including main header line and branch line will be
cleaned to remove all mill, welding scale, oil, corrosion, and other construction debris.
2. System will be flush cleaned and filled ready for service immediately after cleaning.
3. Do not operate pumps or equipment until debris has been removed from the respective system
has been flushed out.
4. Flushing of the system can be done from a pumping source with minimum flow rate to provide a
velocity of 3 m/ sec.
5. Flush the piping system until all debris is removed and clean water comes out.
6. Automatic devices which can become clogged during the cleaning process will be disconnected
and will not be connected permanently until the cleaning process is complete.

8. PRE COMMISSIONING PROCEDURE


8.1. Definition
1. Fire Hose Reel -1 & 1 1/2 Fire Hose System
2. Automatic Wet System:It is a system that is attached to a water supply capable of supplying the
system demand at all fires and that requires no action other than opening a hose valve to provide
water at hose connection.
3. Minimum pressure requirement:
3.1. Hydraulically designed to provide 10 GPM (37.85 lpm) at a minimum residual pressure of 2.2 bars
at the outlet of the hydraulically most remote 1 dia. Hose reel connection.
3.2. Hydraulically designed to provide 100 GPM (378.5 lpm) at a minimum residual pressure of 4.5
bars at the outlet of the hydraulic most remote 1 1/2 dia. Fire hose connection.
8.2. Visual Inspection
1. Prior to perform the Functional Test of the Hose Reel System the following visual Inspection shall be
checked:
2. Check for approved make and recommended materials by the manufacturer / supplier are used at
site.
3. Check that the Hose Reel Cabinets, Landing Valves and its accessories are installed as per the
approved drawings for its quantity and location.
4. Check that the Fire Extinguishers are installed as per the approved drawings for its quantity, type
and location.
5. Check that all the fire extinguishers are in proper condition for its pressure, Tag and mechanical
seals.
6. Check the Painting of the piping system
7. Check all the valves, pipes and bolts are tightened properly.
8. Hydraulic testing of the piping system in accordance with NFPA and the approved Method of
Statement.
9. Conduct a Flush test to remove all dirt and other debris, etc.
8.3. Hydrostatic Test
1. Plug all the openings
2. Close all the drain valves.
3. Fill complete pipeline with water avoiding any air column. (For this purpose keep the drain valve at
the highest elevation slightly open, while filling water when line is completely filled with water close
the valve)
4. By a pressure pump pressurize the line to an intermediate pressure, say 100 psi. Wait for 5 minutes;
check all major joints for any visible leak.
5. If the system is OK as per point No. 4 again pressurize the system to 150 psi and wait for 10 minutes
for any drop in pressure or leakage.
6. If the system is found to be leak proof as per item No. 5 pressurizes the line to 200 psi and keep for
2 hrs.

8.4. Flushing
1. Prior to perform the final Test of the internal fire hose reel and Fire Hose system a flush test shall
be conducted as follows,
2. Pull the hose reel or fire hose outside the building or inside the toilet area
3. Direct the hose to a free direction.
4. Open the valve.
5. Keeps water going for 2-3 minutes?
6. Continue the flushing till all debris is removed and clean water is coming out.
7. Close the valve.
8. Repeat the same procedure for all others.
9. COMMISSIONING PROCEDURE
9.1. Equipment/Instruments to be used
1. Adjustable Spanner.
2. Pressure Gauges.
3. Pipe Wrench.
The following are to be checked prior to handover of the Fire Hose / Hose reel System to the Clients/
End Users.
1. All Fire Hose System Network and attached appurtenances subjected to system working pressure
shall be hydrostatically tested at 200 psi. (13.8 bars) and shall maintain that pressure without loss for
2 hours. Loss shall be determined by a drop in gauge pressure.
2. The piping system shall be flush tested to ensure thorough cleaning of the network piping. The
minimum flow rate shall be at least that necessary to provide a velocity of 3 m/ sec.
3. Ensure all the components of the fire cabinets are installed properly (landing valves, hose reels,
extinguishers & fire hoses).
4. Check pressure in all the floors by using special adapter with calibrated pressure gauge and note the
readings.
5. Open the lock shield valve of each hose reel and adjust its pressure to 3 - 4 bars through 1" PRV.
The water throw should be 6 metre. (Hose reel should be opened inside toilets or outside the building
to avoid any damages to other services).
6. Check all the fire extinguishers for its certification (inside pressure & hose connections also to be
checked).
7. A system functional test may be conducted as given below once the entire Fire protection system is
completed.

STORAGE AND HANDLING

8. RESPONSIBILITIES / SUPERVISION
1. To ensure that all the preparation and application works are carried out according to the Contract
Specification and Manufacturers data sheet.
2. To ensure that the progressing of works is carried out according to the planned program and as per
the approved method statement.
3. To ensure that all the equipment and material required executing the work are available according
to the planned construction program.
4. To co-ordinate with the Main Contractor MEP Coordinator & Safety Officer for a safe and proper
execution of the work
5. To provide all necessary information and to distribute responsibilities to his construction team.
6. The Foreman will be responsible for the following :
7. The foreman will carry out his duties by maintaining continuous coordination with the project
engineer on daily basis, to ensure proper distribution of the work force in the required and planned
locations.
8. To provide to the project engineer a daily progress report indicating the works achieved and discuss
with him the planned activities for the next day.
9. To ensure that the daily work is progressing as planned and to advise the project engineer of any
requirement for additional resources
10. To be aware of test frequencies related to the pipe work and Hydrostatic.
11. To control disposal of waste materials according to the instruction received for the project
engineer.
12. To ensure full coordination with the safety officers to maintain safe working and proper
housekeeping of the site, following the approved safety measures and further ensure that all his
working team are aware of the same to prevent accident and losses.
13. To inform the project engineer about the readiness of work for inspection and its checking, if any.
9. TOOLS & EQUIPMENT
The following Tools and Equipment will be used for Fire Fighting System Installation:
1. Grooving Machine

3. Welding Machine
4. HILTI Drill Machine Model TE-1 and TE-24
5. 12 Grinding Machine
6. Vice Table
7. Pipe Wrenches

10. FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEM DESCRIPTION


10.1. Sprinkler system: Definition.
An Integrated system of underground and overhead piping designed in accordance with fire
protection engineering standards. The portion of the Sprinkler system above ground in a network of
specially sized OR hydraulically designed piping installed in a building, structure, OR area, generally
overhead and to which sprinklers are attached in a systematic pattern. The valve controlling each
system riser is located in the system riser OR its supply piping. The system is activated by heat from a
fire and discharges water over the fire area.
10.2. Wet Pipe System
A sprinkler system employing automatic sprinklers attached to a piping system containing water and
connected to a water supply so that water discharges immediately from sprinkler opened by heat
from a fire.

6. Minimum one four-way inlet breaching connection to 2 1/2 fire hose and two-way inlet
breaching connection to 1 fire hose reel system will be connected according to the accessibility to
connect with fire department vehicle.
11.WORK SEQUENCE AND METHODOLOGY
11.1. Installation of fire sprinkler system
1. The installation of Fire Sprinkler System shall be according to the approved detailed shop drawings
and also as per the recommendations of NFPA 13.
2. Pipe hangers shall be spaced at intervals as specified in our approved shop drawing.
3. Threaded piping will be made with Teflon tape or with a suitable pipe sealing compound (jute and
mastic combination) applied on male treads only. Ends of pipe will be renamed out before being made
up into fitting.
4. 2 and below sizes of pipe are made threaded & 2 12 and above sizes are normally grooved type.
Groove can be made cut groove or roll groove.
5. All underground fittings will be welded type. All piping coming underground will be wrapped with
polyvinyl chloride tape.
6. All Piping must be rigidly supported by a combination network comprised of pipe hangers and rigid
support brackets. Pipe hangers are used to support the dead load of the pipe system. The spacing
will be as per the scheduled attached.

7. Sprinkler Head Location shall be installed in accordance with approved system plans and
coordinated
RCP layout.
11.2. Installation of Sprinkler Head:
1. All the Sprinkler Heads must be installed according to current NFPA 13 standard.
2. The system piping must be properly sized according to the approved drawings and calculation to
insure the minimum required flow rate at the sprinkler head.
3. Install the Sprinkler Heads after the piping is in place to avoid mechanical damage.
4. In the event of a thread leak, remove the unit, apply new pipe Teflon tape, and reinstall.
5. The face of the sprinkler fitting should be installed a nominal 3/8 to 1 behind the finished ceiling
line, adjustment may be made via the push-on escutcheon plate to compensate for variation in the
fittings.
6. Hand tightens the sprinkler into the fitting using the proper size of wrench.
7. To install the escutcheon plate, align it with and press it over the sprinkler body until the outer edge
of the escutcheon meets the mounting surface
11.3. Installation of Butterfly Valve:
1. The Butterfly Valve should be located as per the approved drawings, also to make sure that it is
located where it will be readily accessible for operation, inspection and maintenance.
2. During Installation make sure that the valve disc does not interfere with the operation of other
systems components immediately adjacent to the butterfly valve.
3. When a valve closes hard, it may be due to debris lodged in the sealing area. This may be
corrected by backing-off the hand wheel and closing it again, several times if necessary. The valve
should never be forced to seat by applying a wrench to the hand wheel as this may distort the valve
components or score the sealing surfaces.
4. The inlet and outlet piping adjacent to the valve should be properly supported to prevent excessive
stress on the valve body. The valve should not be used to force a pipeline into position as this may
result in distortion of the valve body.
11.4. Installation of Flow Switch:
1. The flow switch should be located as per the approved drawings, also to make sure that it is located
where it will be readily accessible for operation, inspection and maintenance.

2. The flow switch may be mounted on a horizontal or vertical pipe. On Horizontal pipe they should be
installed on the top side of the pipe where they will accessible.
3. Drain the system and drill a hole in the pipe using a circular saw in a slow speed drill. The whole size
shall be 2.
4. Clean the inside pipe of all growth or other material for a distance equal to the pipe diameter on
either side of the hole.
5. Roll the vane so that it may be inserted in the hole; do not bend or crease it.
6. Insert the Vanes so that the arrow on the saddle points in the direction of the water flow.
7. Install the saddle strap and tighten nuts alternately.
8. The vane must not rub the inside of the pipe or bind in anyway.
12.METHOD OF PRESSURE TESTING OF PIPING
SPRINKLER & FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEMS PIPING
12.1. Installation Check

12.3. Method of Testing


1. Plug all the openings

3. Fill complete pipeline with water avoiding any air column. (For this purpose keep the drain valve at
the highest elevation slightly open, while filling water when line is completely filled with water close
the valve)

5. If the system is OK as per point No. 4 again pressurize the system to 150 psi and wait for 10 minute

6. If the system is found to be leak proof as per item No. 5 pressurizes the line to the required testing
pressure and keep for 2 hrs.
